Oh no, white cartoon characters, how will I ever be able to use these since I'm a racist half black/1/4 latino/1/4 indian?
Yeah, keep putting down white people smart enough to see people creating a non issue just so they can have something ludicrous to whine about.

Who in your mind is whining? Was the article about anyone whining? No. It would just be nice for Apple to represent all of their users, and clearly Apple agrees. No one -- outside of jokes -- has made an issue out of it, EXCEPT for the people on this board who can't handle the idea that not everyone looks like them and are deluded enough to think this somehow relates in any way to their wifi issues.

oh... goody....

Apple not requiring uses to open a web browser first.... That should make the stock rise.

I just wish there was some uniqueness to every OS... This is supposed to be an operating system, but Apple's turning it into a play-pen. Good all and well, but don't go over-the-top.

rage...really.

So this raging user base should decide Apple's workload and how Apples ridiculously large workforce should prioritize projects?

If these massive and ONGOING issues were really "massive" then they would be addressed by Apple. The fact that you think it is 'stupid' really isn't a factor.

haha, okay. You have far too much faith in Apple, and have an incredibly simplistic and idyllic view on how they do business.

The lack of sensitivity on this forum to the issues of people of color is truly astounding and disgusting. Check your privilege. You would feel left out if every emoji was black instead of white. You just never have to think about it because white is always the default, which coincidentally matches up with your race.

Too bad they aren't white, they are YELLOW. There goes your "argument". Also, "check your privilege" ?? Really? Are you serious? What the **** privilege is it to have a yellow emoji? Please, please tell me.

Except as everyone has pointed out and you whiners keep overlooking, NO ONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE YELLOW EMOJI. They are talking about the actual human faces, all of which are white except for some dude in a turban.

Humans don't look that different. It's very easy to include everyone, and awesome that Apple is doing it. Think about what kind of person you have to be to complain about that. Seriously.

I'm happy Apple's focusing on these Emoji. People will be able to make good use of them on the Inter --- oh, yeah... They can't get online because of the wi-fi issues... and Apple removed Ethernet ports from almost all their laptops for aesthetic reasons so they can't even run a hard line now.

Wifi working fine here on 10.10.3.

I'm able to hardline in via Ethernet adapter on lightning port on my MBA 2013.... Just like any other Mac laptop now. Or you deliberately ignoring that fact?

How about fixing Safari

Safari regularly tells me it can't find the server for the Los Angeles Times, Google and other large sites. So I'm back to mainly using Chrome, sometimes Firefox and rarely Safari. Meh.

For me, installing 10,9,5 was a mistake, and I've not downgraded to Yosemite.

From my professional experience, most people don't buy the Ethernet adapter, and then find themselves up a creek when their wireless network isn't usable (whether it be from a OS/driver issue or hardware/signal problem).

As not nearly enough people have mentioned, this is just implementing a decision of the Unicode consortium. They're probably also going to be adding emoji for (among others) "CRICKET BAT AND BALL" and "UNICORN FACE", and every other operating system out there is incredibly likely to adopt these too if they want to conform to the standard, and not end up displaying .

If you're mad about skin tone modifiers, you ought to get really worked up about the unnecessary addition of a unicorn face.

Also bear in mind that this is such a minor feature it doesn't even make the release notes. The only thing that makes the release notes for 10.10.3 is the new Photos app. If you're mad about wifi not working because they're working on new emoji, you ought to be apoplectic that they went and made a whole new Photos app, 'cause that's orders of magnitude more work.

Why does it bother you so much that Apple is adding support for a few new standard emoji characters? Did Al Sharpton slap your mother or something? It's just not a big deal and it's just a continuation of something Apple and all OS vendors and many software publishers have been doing for years. All this does is make software work together better. That's it. I mean, I get it. The race card has been overplayed at times. It's been misused by unscrupulous operators for their own selfish reasons and wielded, unfairly, as a cudgel against perfectly upstanding reasonable people. But... this isn't one of those cases. It's just a few more emoji characters that are being added to the standard and Apple is (well, seems to be) adding them to Mac OS. Let it go. Your anger is misdirected.

Great to see Apple putting effort into emoji and not fixing the opendirectoryd bug...

When I read a comment like this, I always wonder if the writer actually believes it himself...

You know that line "I'm not a racist, but..." Please don't bother using it. If it quacks like a duck...

The racists are the ones who would be bothered by a 'white' emoji in the first place.

Huh? Yosemite is a great OS. It's certainly better than the two that came before it.

Dude, Vista was more reliable than Yosemite.... At least I could get Wi-Fi to work and audio didn't drop out.

(drops the mic, walks off stage)

Lesson learned: Each time you fix something in not-user-visible code, make a change to the UI that hints at the invisible changes you make.

People would be very happy if Apple changed a line or two in the WiFi settings panel because everybody would assume that Apple works on WiFi.

Most of the Operating System is invisible, so if everything looks the same it's hard to tell if thousands of engineer work on the issue or if Apple sent them on a skiing trip.

It's amazing how you recognize some posts as jokes, but not others. Or is it just racial bias? Although, for the life of me, I can't tell how all you smart people can recognize race through posts at MR.

Minorities typically don't complain about inclusion and changing the status quo. Not always 100% accurate, but a pretty good measure.

Actually, they were yellow. They were meant to convey an emotion, I never once thought they were representing me personally and for non whites to get a bug up their behind about this is ludicrous

See above.
Multicultural bullcrap gone mad

User complains about whining, when he's the only person whining. Hilarious.

With Snow Leopard Apple made public the very specific point that there would be little to no user interface/user facing features in the release relative to Leopard. Instead the improvements and optimisations would be under the bonnet and thus we got a smaller OS footprint relative to Leopard, speed improvements etc.

I know in that particular instance much of what was removed was to close the door on the PowerPC era but I can't help but feel that a halt on porting iOS features and the like for the next iteration of OS X and instead concentrating on squashing show stopping bugs & optimising for stability and reliability would go a long way towards restoring faith in the mac platform for many.

Keeping the UX/UI the same for the next release and fixing the invisible stuff would be great.

All this talk about "Apple should get their priorities straight, why are they putting so much emphasis on Emoji, the new Apple is losing their focus!" stuff is silly. Apple has cared about smiley faces for years now.

See: iChat AV for Leopard promo image, including smiley faces (Emoji, for the younger viewers).

All notes aside, I don't like using Emoji, and probably never will. My friends don't get it, but I say the same to them. Oh well. ":p" faces all the way, man.

Back in my day they used to be called "Emoticons" and the only two I ever use is maybe :) and :D. I don't know why, but if I see too many of them in a message my brain automatically assumes the person is an idiot, I can't help it! Please don't judge me  :( :( :( :p :D lollolol tbh zomfg omg ltd gmbh111!1

Well you stated that the MacBook cannot do it, which is factually incorrect. The user could still be up a creek as they might not have an Ethernet cable either, as most people don't buy them either.

Emoji? And you let Aperture die? Some of the priorities need to be reviewed...

Wow. You think that the team that worked on Aperture were taken off that to do the emoji?! Also you think that what they did for emoji was really a significant amount of time in programming? As it's not.

Also, I can see why Apple ended Aperture, most people had gone off to Lightroom, so those left seriously using Aperture for more than what the new photos app can do was not worth the time, cost and effort anymore. Better to drop that for something more worthwhile.

Just watch, anyone who puts in the effort to make all their real people Emojis a darker skin tone (if it matches the user) will be made fun of. Like people who use "he/she" instead of "he" as the gender-neutral pronoun.

This is brilliant news. What with the slow death of Aperture I can stop wasting my time taking photos on holiday and instead recreate scenes using emojis when I return.

Blown highlights? Washed-out skintone? Eyes shut? Red eyes? All gone! It's a masterstroke.

Does anyone seriously think that the wifi and other teams were taken off their projects to fit the Emoji functionality in? This was fun to joke about but some of the posts as usual read like I was on a storm front website. It's no wonder the tech companies want to diversify themselves away from being a less formal country club.
