- network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for convenient access

Did I miss something? This has been included for many updates in 10.3. Maybe they're just summing up the major revisions that have been made throughout the 10.3.x series of updates? 😕 Otherwise I'm happy to see that Apple hasn't given up updating 10.3 when 10.4 is right around the corner. By the way, we got up to 10.2.8, now 10.3.9 appears to be the last... Does that mean we'll reach 10.4.10? 😛

If I drag a file to my iDisk it exhibits the following behavior.

1) Displays a blue progress bar which rapidly reports the byte tranfer of the file to the iDisk even though no bytes are actually transfer at this stage. example 200 mb file transfers in 2 seconds even though the file on iDisk is only a few kilobits in size.

2) Displays a constantly turning sideways blue barber pole with the message "finishing up please wait". Depending on the size of the file being transfered the wait can be a few minutes to hours. No progress bar is present to let you know where you are in the file transfer.

This is really annoying and misleading! You never know the status of the actual transfer and if you terminate the process early, you will corrupt the transfered file and have to wait at least 15 minutes before you can delete the file from your iDisk and try all over again.

I haven't used this much lately. It used to be you could log in to an idisk using Go/Connect to server then something like afp://idisk/(username). Logging in this way you would get accurate updates about bytes transferred to the folder. What is really annoying is how fast this works when you open an idisk from windows.

Actually, if you guys noticed, this is actually the release notes for what's going to be the 10.3.9 COMBO updater. As such, the release notes include the most notable changes from 10.3.1-10.3.8, which probably means that most of the things that you are hoping will come to pass probably won't.

- FileVault, FireWire 800 and WebDAV improvements from Update 10.3.1

Obviously, this was included from 10.3.1.

- network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for convenient access

This was from the 10.3.3 release.

- iPods connected via USB 2.0 are now recognized by iTunes and iSync

This was added a LONG time ago, in Mac OS X 10.3.4.

- support for NTFS formatted volumes

This was done in Mac OS X 10.3.5

- Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and Bluetooth phones.

This has obviously happened a LONG time ago, since the Apple Wireless Keyboard has worked with Mac OS X as soon as it was available, so it's ludicrous to think that this update will actually ADD compatibility for the Apple Wireless Keyboard.

I can't believe that everybody [EDIT: except Billicus] missed OBVIOUS indications that these are the release notes for the combo updater. 10.3.9 will not be so nearly a comprehensive update. Let's wait for the ACTUAL list of improvements that haven't happened already, shall we? 🙄

With this one I think I'm going to do a fresh install of 10.3, with a direct upgrade to 10.3.9.

I think I will do a full backup of my home directory before going to 10.3.9. It's big, covers a lot, and could be pretty ugly if things go bad. Better safe than sorry.

On the other hand, it looks like a pretty awesome update! Can't wait.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there are alot of rumors up in the air? iMacs, eMacs, 10.3.9, Tiger, Moto/iTunes phones, PowerMacs, NAB announcements, Airport refreshes, 2 button mouse. . <inhale> . .Asteroid, dual-core chips. Do Apple employees sleep?

Odd that it was all in the installer notes. Maybe it's because it's the combo updated seeded, so for users starting from 10.3 scratch it displays everything new?

Yeah... showing servers that was tipped me off that this wasn't the list for what 10.3.9 was going to include. 😉 Most of these features are already included in the OS. 🙂

this is quite an impressive update! quite more end-user-noticeable changes listed. hooray for ntfs and ipod over usb. and of course, there's the obligatory updated ATI and nvidia drivers which i never notice a difference. but that means that there'll be NTFS and ipod/usb2.0 support in tiger i presume. awesome.

but question: arent network mounts shown on the finder sidebar and desktop anyways?!?! hasnt this been a feature since, um, mac os 7ish days? my network mounts (FTP, AFP, SMB, etc.) show up in the finder sidebar and on the desktop already. i dont get it.

So, if this list summarizes every little change over the 10.3 lifecycle then does this mean that we wont get the NTFS write support? That'd suck! 🙁

Umm... We already have USB ipod support and limited NTFS support... These are the Combo updater differences. 😀

WOW. That is one hell of an update. I suspect Apple cleared all of the bugs they intend to for 10.3 except for the odd security patch here and there.
That's what I was thinking. There are a lot of fixes to AFP functionailty... which are sorely needed, especially when Tiger rolls out real Mobile Home Directories (see the "Home Away from Home section of http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/tiger/).

That technology will be awesome for the business and lab environments... and next it will start appearing in the home and mobile consumer markets.

Apple seems to me working toward giving you access to all of your data and electronic identity no matter where you are, using any combination of .Mac, Home on iPod, and/or OS X Server.

When Tiger is released, I want to do a clean install. Problem is that I have never done it. I've always done an Archive + install.

When I do a clean install using the Tiger Upgrade disks, do I need to install OSX 10.2 first, upgrade 10.2 up until 10.2.8, then use my 10.3 Panther Upgrade disks to update Jaguar to Panther 10.3, use Apple's website to upgrade to OS 10.3.9, and then use the new Tiger Upgrade disks to get Tiger?

Or maybe there's an easier way? Could I just install Tiger using the disks that come out of the box, or maybe install Jaguar on my system and use my new Tiger disk to update to 10.4 directly?

This doesn't mean Tiger won't be released soon, it just means that Apple is finishing up the 10.3.* series- this adds credibility to the "rumor" that 10.4 will be released REALLY soon.

This means nothing one way or another. Apple could release a 10.3.9.1 update AFTER Tiger comes out to solve important issues.

they probably are releasing the new OpelGL drivers in response to the horrible performancee of DOOM 3. updated drivers are a good thing!

And also, I don't think this will be the last upgrade to the 10.3 series. Logically, the next one will be 10.3.10. Which looks pretty good, visually at least.

Lee Tom

10.3.10=10.3.1 NOT LOGICAL.

I'm excited about more complete NTFS support (good news for Windows users who may want to use NTFS formatted volumes with their Macs).

If Apple releases 10.3.9 very soon, then I'm almost confident Apple will wrap up development of Tiger soon after.

I would assume it is the same for tiger as it was for OS 10.3, 10.2, 10.1, 10.0, 9.2, etc... From the startup, hold down C. Open up disk utility after it boots off the disk, you can format your drive from here. I always zero my hard drive after doing a clean install. You can get to this by the options menu on the erase drive menu. After that you can partition the HD, which I do if I have a large enough drive. After that intall the new OS.

There is no need to install any other OS besides 10.4

Reminds of last year, Apple released 10.2.8 just after Panther went gold. I still expect Tiger to drop next month.

We're all dumkopfs!

what appears to be a final build (7W82) of 10.3.9 has been seeded to Apple's developers.

this is a different build because it supports the new PowerMacs being announced at the WWDC

It's a new hardware build.
