Does anyone who got the 10.3.9 seed know if it fixes the nefarious "Unable to connect to background processes" KNOWN BUG! It involves a port conflict and/or an issue with the Shake Qmaster background process system. It renders Compressor completely useless.

I have done every Terminal hack I can find online, as well as a complete OS X install, complete FCP4HD/DVDSP installs, blah, blah, blah...

I went to the Apple Store in Oakbrook, IL. The "Genius" at the Genius Bar said I was already further ahead in the problem than he could go. 800-SOS-APPL only offers the same instructions as the Apple Knowledge Base document on the issue. The "workaround" is to use QT instead of Compressor--but I use some Compressor-only features (like input geometry adjustments, etc) and I LIKE the program--when the BLASTED thing works!!

It SUCKS that two $1,000 programs (FCP/DVDSP) do not work to spec.

Please... Someone tell me that 10.3.9 fixes this...?!
If you give me some detail about what the problem is, I'd be glad to try to help, although I'm not familiar with the application itself. Did you always have the problem, or did it start after a particular update?

I just got my 15" AluBook three weeks ago and loaded FCP4/DVDSP2, amoung other titles. The problem was evidenced immediately, and if you run a Google search with these terms "compressor unable connection," you'll see scores of forums with dozens of potential fixes--from Terminal hacks to complete reinstalls of everything. I've done them all, to no avail.

The Apple Tech support person told me that if nothing works, the "work-around" was completely bypassing Compressor by encoding via QuickTime, at least until a true fix becomes available.

Hence, my question--will the 10.3.9 upgrade resolve this problem? Any developers out there that can verify?

ok everyone is doing it... so being a teenager in high school I'm very suseptable to peer pressure 😛

My take on the bloody war of 10.3.10 vs blablabla no that doesn't make sense vs whatever, is that 10.3.9 will be the last update to Panther for this very reason. Apple tries to be simplistic. 10.3.10 would confuse some people out there. I had trouble with it at first, until someone explained the difference between math and version numbers. 10.3.9.1 is getting a little extreme on the complexity for Apple. I mean this isn't a version number for Microsoft's windows version of Internet Explorer (Gosh you have numbers letters everything! Something to satisfy everyone I suppose). My bet is that Apple will test this 10.3.9 update, test it long, test it hard. They will make it rock solid on usability. They'll keep testing it hard even after it's released. If they discover something that isn't acceptable in that update I would guess they would pull the update as quickly as possible and re-release it as 10.3.9. Obviously without that last ".". That was a period. chill 😛

Remember it just has to be stable and usable. Their real star is now "10.3.9 is usable... but looks what you can do with Apple Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger!"

And as always don't flame or shoot me please... I try my best to put lots of thought into my post 🙁

I agree-10.3.10 would be confusing-take for example Intel's numbering scheme is just as confusing-eg. their PC graphics drivers are numbered like this :
-one release was called😛V14.8.01 (using three decimal points)
-version 14.9
-then instead of 15.0, they called the next update 14.10
-now it's v 14.11

I hope Apple doesn't use a numbering system for updates like what Intel does.

I can download the 10.3.9 seed, but I don't have the video apps to test. I think the update will be available to everyone this week, hopefully.

Great! If there is a delay, do you want to email me the seed and I'll test it out for you?!

I'd be HAPPY to help you test the build!

(he he he!)

As I'm sure you know, the NDA doesn't allow me to do that. You'd have to send me your apps, which doesn't make sense, either. Apple does have a beta test program, where non-developers can get early access. Maybe you should look into it?

There is nothing confusing about the numbering scheme.
It is a development cycle not a base 10 number.
All software has been released that way since forever.
It will always be done that way.
All companies use the x.x.x.x numbering scheme.

Version.Major release.Major update.Minor Update
Get used to it.

I don't really care at this point because I am anxious for Tiger. I would like to see them get it right though just for a confidence increase in Apple.

It certainly will become irrelevant to many as we are coming closer to the release of Tiger. Since I believe Steve, we are now within three months of Tiger's release.

I hope Apple fixes this problem.
You could also upgrade DVD SP to version 3?

I use FCP/DVD SP3 and compressor without problem

When I had trouble with Compressor and DVDSP 2, I manually placed the Qmaster files where they had to be, and then it worked. It was something like StartupItems/Qmaster/ with the Qmaster program, a Resources folder and StartupParameters.plist. They were already there but somehow a copy over from an older install fixed whatever went wrong in those files.

Any word on the latest build of 10.3.9? Last I saw it was 7W87.
7W90 was seeded last Friday. Apparently it didn't have any known issues so I would suspect 10.3.9 will be released sometime this week, perhaps as early as today.

As it stands now, maybe Apple will follow its usual practice of releases on Tuesday. The release of 10.3.9 could coincide with FOSE.

I believe it will be this week. I have been waiting on it for a while now because of a new ethernet driver that is to be included in it.

I thought OS updates were released on any given weekday? What's FOSE?

Now we have our official announcement for Tiger. 10.3.9 is still MIA. Maybe NAB will also bring us 10.3.9. Can't imagine that it won't be released before WWDC.

Hopefull this will be the last update to Panther. Quite frankly, I'm tired of constantly updating my mac. It's almost as bad as Windows.

No it isn't. 😉
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1785280,00.asp
The Microsoft security train made its scheduled monthly stop on Tuesday, dropping off eight updates to cover 18 vulnerabilities in a range of widely deployed products.

Five of the eight advisories are rated "critical" and Redmond officials are urging customers to apply at least three immediately as high-priority updates.
😱 😱 😱

P.S. On the same day, the same publication also released this: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1785266,00.asp

I expected it yesterday. However, I remember someone saying 10.3.9 will come out at the same time as Tiger. So if they're right, 10.3.9 will only be for users who don't upgrade to Tiger when it is available on April 29. But I doubt it. I still think it will come out soon. Perhaps later today.
