Well, as I said in a previous post, I've had to reinstall OS X from scratch as it wouldn't work after a stalled update. I'm back in and have 10.4.2 on, and what a difference.

Mac OS X Tiger is no longer a steaming pile of an OS. It's about three months late, but Tiger's finally here and it's looking good.

It did that 10.4.1 as well, but top doesn't always show all the processes running.

I see separate widgets as separate entries in top and ps and activity monitor in 10.4.1 and 10.4.2... do you mean to say that top only shows you the top resource-consuming processes, and so may not show you every dashboard process? I think that's what you mean, and why Trekkie only sees one DB process.

Log out error

I was hoping this update would fix my logout error. I cannot log out or restart/shutdown from any user. I have to go to Login Window to restart. Any suggestions?

That's what I meant. Thanks for making it more clear. :)

Do you have fast user switching enabled? In System Preferences -> Account Options -> Login Options, is the "Show the Restart...." option checked?

When you say you cannot do it, do you mean the option is no longer there, or do you mean that it does not work?

Not really a serious problem

But TV Tracker (Dashboard) seems to be broken. Can no longer load schedules. Can anyone else confirm?

G5 1.8 Dual Much Quieter

Maybe too soon to say for sure, only about 30 minutes after the update...(knock wood)...

My PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8 from the time I got it both with Panther and then Tiger had it's fans spinning and whirring at often ridiculous levels when the computer was barely doing anything or even just idling.

After 10.4.2...whisper quiet...shhhhh....

try it...

cntrl + alt + delete is a windows command
Funny, it also seems to work on Linux for me....

Perhaps it's really an Intel BIOS command, so soon Mac users will be giving the "three-fingered salute" when they get tired of the beach ball....

Just keeps getting better

I installed Tiger on all 3 of my Macs (DP 2.5, G4 iMac & G4 iBook) when it was first released, and it was amazing then and just keeps getting better. This update brings with it a noticable speed boost overall, and i assume can only improve on the reliability that I have come to depend on for every one of my machines.

Just wanted to put that out there for any of the people who need any amount of reassurance that Tiger is by far the best operating system consumers have ever seen. I put every one of my machines through the ringer each day in my graphic design business and they have never let me down.

What does this fix mean?

Can anyone confirm what this fix means:

This update ensures that periodic background maintenance tasks as scheduled in launchd.conf.

It ensures that periodic background maintenance tasks as scheduled in launchd.conf do what?

And to the person who brought up Ctrl-Open Apple-Reset, I'd all but forgotten that old gem from the Apple ][. What wonderful days those were back when any desktop computer, regardless of its OS, was perfectly acceptable.

Ya know, I've been checking in everyday hoping for this update, and now that I've installed it I can't remember why I was looking forward to it.

I know it wasn't the Widget Manager... Still don't see the point of that one. Are that may people afraid of going into their Library folder?

Agreed. My finder crashes are so lame... I hope they're more fun now.

Launch. There was a problem with a particular type of launch agent not running as expected. I can't remember which launch method was affected, but apparently it isn't any more...

Not installing

The installer keeps bonking out at "preparing disk volume" at the beginning of the installation. I've tried repeatedly, before and after repairing disk permissions. What do I do?

Release looks fine so far. Checked out a couple of annoying bugs--e.g. a Burn Folder with Smart folders used to burn the smart folder itself, not its contents--are fixed.

I hate to say it, but I think Tiger will be a very forgettable release of OS X for me. The UI is inconsistent, the bugs at release were brutal, and clearly things were not thought through enough--e.g. widget management--or are major steps backwards to Microsoft Country--e.g. syncing now requires iSync to be open all the time to sync all of your devices and I know have to go to three places to set preferences.

Apple knows as much about brand building as anyone, and I am amazed they released Tiger in the shape they did. I am happy to get the bug fixes, but still untrusting of Apple's quality in this OS release. And to think I was so excited for Tiger and bought the Family Pack.

I am usually not this negative at all, and that is the major point. For someone like me to lose so much faith in Apple's products--I read every comment on the .2 patch on 4 sites before I installed it--is why Apple needs to get back to taking quality a little bit more seriously.

I installed this update on a Mac Mini and an old PowerBook, I have two external keyboards, the keys all work fine for me. On another note, it made the PowerBook so much faster on startup, about the same as the Mini's startup time now. Had three or four permissions to repair after installation.

Brian

I mean, those keys don't work INSIDE WIDGETS, as in scrolling the contents of a widget, like the Widget Manager or the Dictionary widget... I'm using a standard Apple PO (Portuguese) Keyboard, and it works just fine...

Warning

If you've disabled the Apple Phone Book or Stocks widget (or probably any other Apple widget) turn them back on before you install this update otherwise you'll have to go digging around in the Package Contents to recreate the widget!

And the iPhoto colorsync 'enhancing' bug is still there

See here for a way to work with this bug until Apple releases a fix.

Did they fix the problem with Adobe Helvetica Neue conflicting with Apple's Helvetica that causes Dashboard Widget text to render incorrectly?

I fixed this myself by getting the open type version of Helvetica Neue

Same here, however I have not upgraded Tiger. I am using 10.4 still.

PithHelmet seems to cause Safari to crash out.

Other than that, the update appears fine so far for me

Transparet Dock broke & next updates

TransparentDock appears to no longer work. My dock is no longer transparent and the app pops up a dialog indicating that it may not work. The Apply Changes button is greyed out. I've upgraded 4 machines and the same thing. :(

Transparent Dock was also broken for me. It should not take long for the update to come out.

Widget Manager is good.

No other obvious changes on my G4 PowerMac.

Now we start looking forward to a major Open GL update in the next few months. That is, according to rumours from earlier in the year.

So far, I have not had any issues with PH and Safari build 412.2. What makes it crash for you? Just constantly, or at certain times?

I do wish they would enhance Safari so that the insert caret in text-boxes behaved like it does in FF and IE, though, so that you can do things like use the enhanced mode in this forum's editor more effectively.... :(
