Still can't turn all widgets off, forces you to down to only one. Also can't turn off dashboard all together. Ugh.

*sigh* Yes Dashboard can be turned off. You just don't ever turn it on.

For those of you complaining about Dashboard and think it can't be turned off, stop your whining. Go to the Dashboard and Expose system preference pane, make sure none of the corners are set to activate Dashboard, and set Dashboard's command-key sequence to nothing (i.e.: the "-" entry in the popup menu). Now drag the Dashboard icon out of the Dock. It will poof even though it's "active".

As long as you never activate Dashboard once, the widgets will not be activated and they won't take up memory. And once you've followed the steps I've outlined, it's impossible to even activate Dashboard anyway.

Also, to those complaining the lack of QE2D being activated (Quartz Extreme 2D) -- it actually might make applications slower. Not only that, but the software acceleration has been so improved with Tiger. (Read and learn.) So there's no reason that you need to rally around QE2D when you don't even know the benefits that it will bring.

*sigh* I swear, some people just complain without actually knowing the facts.

kicked off

I installed it, and was messing around on Safari (trying to see the new Ice Age 2 teaser on Apple's website). Everything slowed down, which it had been doing since I updated (thankfully doesn't seem to be doing now), and all of a sudden the screen went blue and I was kicked off to the log in screen. Very odd.

I like widgets manager, though. Hopefully I'll keep noticing more and more things that I like.

This may have nothing to do with 10.4.2... but weather in dashboard at 10:28 PM says that it is sunny out... and the sky is dark... weird.

TV Tracker...

isn't working for me either. I keep configuring it and it just won't take. What a pain, it's the only way for me to find out what's on TV without having to work out the TV guide site.

Do you have fast user switching enabled? In System Preferences -> Account Options -> Login Options, is the "Show the Restart...." option checked?

When you say you cannot do it, do you mean the option is no longer there, or do you mean that it does not work?

It does not work (although the option is there).

It only shows up if you have an MS mouse.

10.4.2 is not showing up in Software Update for me. :( Anyone else having this problem?

--
edit: after four attempts the update finally showed up and is installing now...

Dang, some of you have some seriously bad karma. Just installed, no issues as of yet. Runnin' just as smooth as before, though still whoring memory like that's its job. Then again, maybe it did before, and I never noticed. And when I say whored, I mean whored—out of 1.25GB, I've got only 31MB reported as free.

10.4.2 didnt' fix the rev B 1.8 G5 single issues with OpenGL and Quicktime. I have tested it a few times after optimizing and even repairing permissions... still no dice. Still all games, quicktimes, and iTunes vis., and even slide shows lock up... Utter shyte.

I'm very disappointed. I want a dual 2.7, 8 gigs of ram, and dual 400gb hdd's with a couple dozen biblically-proportioned concubines as retribution for Apple's neglect... Or a simple patch to fix the problem would suffice. ;-) ... just trying to keep in line with people -demanding- that what they -want- from Apple as though Apple would give a crap. This bug only affects one tinty system in their entire line-up and it's even discontinued now (I wonder why...) so why the heck would they care about those who bought the "low-end" G5?

If you are using a third party mouse, say a Microsoft or Logitech, you need to use their preference pane (or application) to set the right speed (you may want to check your Applications folder first).

pbook not as hot after 10.4.2 ...

Not sure if someone else got a similar problem on their pbooks, but after upgrading to Tiger (even 10.4.1) mine started to get really much *hotter* , specially when plugged in...
but now after upgrading to 10.4.2, it's been running cooler for the last couple of hours (with continuous use) ... feels like it's back to 10.3 level !!

Installed fine on my PB :)

Haven't noticed much difference except for the widget manager (which I don't use) and the fact I got prompted by Keychain that "airport" had changed when I logged in and did I want to let it have my WPA password? :D

And Safari's scrolling is much smoother now. I quite like it :)

So far, I have not had any issues with PH and Safari build 412.2. What makes it crash for you? Just constantly, or at certain times?

I can consistenly reproduce the crash on certain websites. console.log shows:
2005-07-13 03:27:12.699 Safari[307] *** Illegal NSTableView data source (<PHAttachmentController: 0x45424c0>[object class: NSString, number of selected objects: 0]). Must implement numberOfRowsInTableView: and tableView:eek:bjectValueForTableColumn:row:

Better memory management in 10.4.2

just my 2 cents. Judging from my menu meters, which track my memory usage, 10.4.2 is WAY more thrifty with memory allocation. I've got a combination of programs running that usually eats up 550 out of my 768 and it's only taking 298. very very impressive.

Same is happening with mine... It's 11:30 in minnesota, but my weather widget is now light...

Otherwise, I see no big differences! Smooth sailing so far.... :)

Installed on my Mac mini - I don't think I've noticed any differences except the widget manager, and downloaded widgets now ask if you want to install them when they're downloaded - then opens the dashboard and asks if you want to keep it or not.

Dashboard is much improved due to that!

I'm using a Microsoft mouse so I guess my settings override Safari's and that's why I'm not noticing quicker scrolling?

Hi ,
I have Quartz2DExtreme enabled by default , and my experience is that most apps are a lot faster. So are my benchmarks like user interface and quartz a lot higher.Maybe Quartz2DExtreme is not fully ready and thats the reason why Apple did not enabled it in this update?Anyway , for me enabling it was a good thing and i have no complains about it.
See my Xbench-scores at http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc1=120671
I know Xbench is not "the" best benchmark program , but then again , i'm not a technical nerd who knows it all. It's just what i experience on my Mac.
For turning on Quartz2DExtreme by default i have used the Terminal-app with this command : sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver \Quartz2DExtremeEnabled -boolean YES

Anyone here at the forum with the same experience as me ?
