I'm not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but I just helped a friend install the update on his G4 700 Mhz iMac 15" with super-drive. After the first restart to finish the install the gray screen with the gray Apple just sat there and did nothing for 5 minutes.

Subsequently I tried powering down several times and restarting, but each time it was back to the gray screen. I had to restart while holding the "eject" button to get the CD tray opened; now I put in the 10.4 install CD and booted up from the CD (By holding down "C" while restarting). I repaired permissions from the Utility menu and restarted. Nothing.

Finally I had to archive and install 10.4, and then we'll be able to (hopefully, knock on wood) start up in 10.4.0 and make sure all the settings are in order, then delete the "previous system" folder, and WAIT FOR 10.4.3. I definitely can't say this is common, but something waaay screwed up this installation, and it freaks me out. Any comments, suggestions?

[EDIT] my friend's computer is up and running fine with 10.4 now. Out of curiosity I installed 10.4.2 on my iMac and did a little prayer and it went without a hitch. I may have jumped the gun on restarting during the gray screen, then again it did seem like a long stall...

I must agree with a previous poster and say that I am more excited about this update than the initial tiger release : ).

I know it wasn't the Widget Manager... Still don't see the point of that one. Are that may people afraid of going into their Library folder?

I agree... was hitting command+space, typing "widg" and hitting enter too hard to do before?

also....

Now I have to launch the widget manager (which takes up a lot of real estate) in order to go to "More Widgets"? Weeeeaaaaaaakkkkk..... :(

ARGH!

Overall, the 10.4.2 has made my 1.5 GHz 15" PowerBook G4 snappier and more efficient. However, a few annoying bugs still persist that continue to tick me off to no end:

• iChatAgent still refuses to let the system sleep instantly—it can take up to 30 seconds for the PB to sleep, even if I quit iChat. The only solution is to force quit iChatAgent (via Activity Monitor) before putting the machine to sleep. This is definitely a reported bug acknowledged by Apple; why they haven't fixed this pretty serious usability issue is beyond me. Send in those bug reports!

• Mail and iChat still don't hide on login when "Hide on login" is clearly selected, but it's not that big of a deal. With 10.4.2, I rarely have to logout anyway.

I have a logitech mouse, the scrolling speed preference appears for me, and does work - slows / speeds up scrolling

Also, if I click the down arrow on the mouse ( next to the scroll wheel ) the Task Switch pop up shows too!

If you are using a third party mouse, say a Microsoft or Logitech, you need to use their preference pane (or application) to set the right speed (you may want to check your Applications folder first).

It only shows up if you have an MS mouse.

This is a nice new and needed feature:

After installing, all my icons in the upper right are dead and gone. I don't run any fancy custom gui stuff. The SystemUIServer process is frozen.

On a side note, since 10.4.1 I've noticed "coreaudiod" is always frozen, too.

Still can't turn all widgets off, forces you to down to only one. Also can't turn off dashboard all together. Ugh.
[Pro Tip:]
If you never activate dashboard, it never uses any memory or cpu cycles. Just disable the hotkey and remove the icon from your dock.

I disabled dashboard once. I did nothing for speed. Same with Spotlight.

I haven't yet purchased and installed Tiger. I don't want to have to spend big bucks on new versions of software, like Norton Anti-Virus.

For those of you that have upgraded, has the experience been worth it? Is Tiger so much better than Panther that I should bite the bullet? Are there any annoying problems?

If you are already using Panther, then no, I don't think it's worth it.

I just upgraded a few days ago from 10.3.9 and am not very impressed. If anything, some apps on my dual G5 seem slower than before. Widgets and Spotlight are cool (although I have yet to use Spotlight) but IMO these features are not worth the $130 price tag.

My advice: Stay with Panther (be sure you're using the last incarnation 10.3.9) and, if you do want to upgrade to Tiger, wait until it reaches version 10.4.5 or so.

Panther is a great OS, and in a way better than Tiger, as it is in its 10th incarnation, whereas Tiger is only in its 3rd.

Sun At Night Not 10.4.2 Fault

This may have nothing to do with 10.4.2... but weather in dashboard at 10:28 PM says that it is sunny out... and the sky is dark... weird.
That's a bug in the widget. Mine is Moon now. But it has been sun other nights. No explaning why this happens from time to time.

I actually love dashboard, so I've never actually disabled it. I just took notice that the widgets don't show up in top or in Activity Monitor. Since Dashboard is actually run by the Dock process, it just stands to reason that it uses no CPU/Memory if it's never been activated (since you can see it load the first launch as well). I figure it won't do much for speed, but it does cut down on the memory usage (about 85MB active currently for widgets, but I can spare it).

Spotlight, I wouldn't try disabling that either, as I really like it, but the mds process chewing up my CPU every now and then can be irritating.

...and to keep this on topic, I've had 10.4.2 running on my iMac G4 and my iBook G4 for about 6 hours now, seems solid thus far, but what's 6 hours really? Disappointed to see that the version of Safari is way, way behind the CVS version, but it definitely is snappier.

I had the same problem. I went to unsanity.com and downloaded Cleardock. It is free and appears to be working.

From their webpage:

TV Tracker 1.5.1
(it's back, 10.4.2 compatible and faster than ever)

Hmmm interesting....just for laughs I checked my OS version just to be sure it didn't upgrade on it's own or something and it is 10.4, who knows, maybe it's just a coincidence. Nice to see they updated it fast :)

YES! My Mac mini does this all the time - most of the time it's not noticable, but when I haven't got music playing I can hear it, everytime I press a key.

I have just the ordinary USB keyboard.

Anyone know why it does it?

*edit* It's not a new thing for 10.4.2 - it's done it since I installed Tiger

Then again, maybe it did before, and I never noticed. And when I say whored, I mean whored—out of 1.25GB, I've got only 31MB reported as free.

A functioning Mac should never have any significant amount of memory reported as "free". Any memory not used actively is taken up by the OS for Caching to reduce HD access. It speeds the system considerably. (After all, "free" memory is just a waste of cash)

i noticed the safari scrolling to be much faster also.. very nice!

but.. the sonyericsson k750 connecting via usb still triggers a kernel panic upon disconnection (affects sonyericsson z800 and other usb enabled sonyericsson mobile phones). i thought they woulda fixed that in 10.4.2 seeing as fixing kernel panics would be high on their priority list
oh well. theres always 10.4.3

Hmmm, that issue was affecting my eMac running 10.3.9 and PocketMac Pro 3.51 - it would see the PocketPC, and sync, but as soon as I disconnected, Kernel Panic. Oddly, despite my having disabled USB (I'm sure I did so), it appeared to have re-enabled it, and was showing the device as connected when I plugged it in to charge via USB - I was aware of it, because I removed it and noticed PocketMac's window was saying it was connected. It didn't Kernel Panic that time, though.

I don't get these bugs. You'd think USB communication was one of the easiest things in the world to get right by now.

I have a iMac G5 and after installing 10.4.2 my computer has been running absolutely, unbelievably slow and nothing works. It's really making me mad. I am glad I have not yet updated my PowerBook since this is the only computer still working for me. Anyways... has anyone else experiences this same problem? If so, let me know and I will further explain my problems. My E-mail is cmcclain@tampabay.rr.com and my AIM is citrusgoofy
