The open message at the apple event really said " while others give customers a choice, we at apple tell people what they need"

Maverick is not a new OS, ita an update to X. Its not OS 11. Lets see if apple gives. OS XI away for free in the future. Windows 8 is an OS and its $200. Windows 8.1 is free. There come a time when windows PC owners will be able to download and install a full OS.

Iworks and ilife are now free to new devices not all apple devices. Most likely to convince people to try it since they never once mention the sales numbers for those apps. That's what the extra $70 for the retina mini is for.

ITunes radio. 20 million have tried it. Not active users. It will get the ping treatment by summer time 2014.

Don't take me for anti apple. Own multiple apple devices. Updated to maverick successfully and its nice but the misleading slide show at the event is not a great practice for company that is suppose to be setting the standard.

Wait - how can that graph go down? Are there that many people going back to an old OS?

I would think the graph would move up - jagged maybe, but never down to that degree...

So far seems good. Glad that all the skeumorphic crap has gone.

I'm sure Safari is faster in part due to the fact that the install cleans up crap that slows it down.. wait a few months and then review the performance - i'm sure it will be good still, but not as good as immediately after installing 10.9.

The performance over all of 10.9 seems a lot faster than ML.

Just need to get my Canon MX700 working over network... not just USB.

While I may be in the minority, I think that some skeuomorphism is good. It is still there in many forms on Mavericks, particularly the OS icons (one of my biggest pet peeves with iOS 7).

But when OS X (OSXI?) invariably goes to this (http://www.studoesdesign.co.uk/work/osxivericks/), I'm done, performance be damned.

Aesthetics brought me to Apple, and it appears it'll be what makes me depart too, sadly.

Put me in the 'I'm on 10.6.8 (best OS ever), but going to finally upgrade to 10.9 camp'.

Only reason I am updating is to run Logic X. But some of the new features (improved battery life and full screen multi-display support) make it compelling.

Only reason I never tried 10.7 originally was the move to download only install. I always like to do a 'clean install', so that was problematic when first released. But now that I know there are well published easy ways to create a boot CD/flash install drive, that is no longer an issue.

Looking forward to this update!

Stu needs to find some other profession. Those mock ups are utterly hideous and cheap looking, not to mention harsh on the eyes.

Apple used to care about aesthetics because it was supposedly the graphic designer's/photographer's/artist's OS of choice. Now, if iOS7 is the future, it seems to have aiming to be the graffiti scribbler's OS of choice.

If you ever wondered what happened to the owners of the worst laid out MySpace homepages; they are all working at Cupertino now.

Wow, some people aren't even happy with free. Might want to read up on the changes that are in 10.9 as they aren't small inconsequential changes. 10.9 has improved battery life on laptops and improved memory efficiency to name just two. What this means is that the Apple hardware that people currently have will now last longer. That is a big win for everyone. Now if Apple had charged $129.99 for 10.9 and said that only 2011 or newer hardware could be used for 10.9 then I can see someone complaining that Apple just wants to sell hardware. This is about user experience and 10.9 seems to improve that. Apple is also giving away free updates to people who bought iLife 09 and the older version of iWork. Who cares how many copies were sold, I certainly don't.

Updated my late 2012 Mini last night, finished just before I went to bed so haven't had much of a play. Only issue was it said Avast wasn't compatible, I'll look into that today. Hopefully no other dramas, all looking good so far.

Why are you using Anti-Virus software on your Mac? I have owned Macs since 2002 and not once have I ever needed any Anti-Virus software. And considering the fact that OS X has built in trojan detection and removal it seems even less necessary to use Anti-Virus software for OS X.

I quite like those mock ups!

It took 24 hours for Mavericks to get 7.66%

It took 14 months for Windows 8 to get 8.02%

----------

ITunes radio. 20 million have tried it. Not active users. It will get the ping treatment by summer time 2014..

20 million people "tried it", with over a billion songs being streamed. Which means the average user has listened to 50 tracks on iTunes Radio in a month. Sounds like a hit to me.

I updated the wife's late-2012 MacBook Air overnight, and so far so good. I'm waiting to update the mid-2009 iMac until I can get a straight answer about how Parallels works on Mavericks (running PD7 currently to run Quicken13, and tired of the annual Parallels extortion...I mean update cycle).

Updated my 2012 macbook pro, and loved the changes.

I was afraid of what Mavericks would do to my focusrite pro 40, and so I was going to hold off, until I read that a developer was successfully using the same interface for his audio with no problems.

Upgraded my early 2008 Mac pro. I love the new dual monitor experience.

Incidentally, the new flip4mac works fine in Mavericks.

Wow, people are really stretching logic here. It took Apple 24-hours to get to 7.66% of their user base. It took Windows 8 14 months to be on 8.02% of ALL DESKTOPS AND LAPTOPS. There's a huge difference.

Somebody, please convince me that I'm just too conservative and the new OS is as good, solid, simple, intuitive, etc. as SL!

Put me in the 'I'm on 10.6.8 (best OS ever), but going to finally upgrade to 10.9 camp Looking forward to this update!

SL users will regreat upadting. OS X now is full of surprises that will make you mad. Quicktime is diferent, Mail is diferent, PReview is diferent, Text Edit is diferent an many many more umpleasent surprises in Finder, iTunes, iPhoto, imovie, and still many more..

Friend advice here. Do update so you can try it. But do make a COMPLETE backup before doing so, and once in Mavericks do remember everything new you created. You probably will want to go back to SL in 3 days.

Consider me convinced (not that I needed much).

It's a percentage, not a total number of users. No stretching of logic here. Nice try though.

An OS that doesn't use all available RAM effectively when it can is just wasting available resources :)

A large file cache is by design- it can make a lot of things faster, and it is gone the instant any app needs the RAM for any other reason...

Agreed..I wasn't complaining, just something I noticed...so far, Mav is running great!

I may not have a Mac, but I do have a Hackintosh, and Mavericks is a great upgrade! The iOS and OSX interfaces are starting to converge and I like it!

Also, the Safari push notifications are cool, I love getting notified whenever there's a new MacRumors story. Y'all should sign up.

PS- MacRumors, make an iOS App!

You should also try and make a Hackintosh iOS device so you won't have to buy any Apple hardware, and use their all OS's against the EULA's and be proud as you are.

No, it is a stretch of logic. Because if one group has 85% of the market, it will take more sales for them to get to 8% than if somebody only has 5-7%. It's a huge stretch of logic to use two separate percentages. OS X Mavericks is up to .5-.7% of users. Yet even if every single user were to upgrade to Mavericks, if they could, there would still be more people using Windows 8.

Agreed. I'd also add that he seems genuinely excited about the product and what it'll mean to people, rather than the others who to me feel like they're going through the motions, trying to convince people they've done something great that must be purchased whilst actually thinking about their new Bentley/Yacht/Plane that they intend to order after the next sales figures are announced.

absolutely. he understands that free for instance does matter. it might be only $20-30 but still it does.

i see the newest story is microsoft bashing iwork and ipads and im sure everyone here is up in arms but this is what cook, schiller and cue do onstage. "our competitors yada yada yada"

be content with your own product and its quality and that will carry you to success.

Oh of course not, why would anyone here take you as Anti-Apple even though you're entire post was Anti-Apple, Pro Windows 8 :)rolleyes:), you called people, "iOS Suckers" which should've been reported and it will be amongst the other 5 of your posts that greatly resemble your latest one and your registration date is this month. Of course you're not Anti-Apple, you're just simply stating an opinion followed by the usual BS line of "I own Apple products too". ;)
