My experience with 10.7/8 made me a little nervous, but Mavericks is absolutely screaming on my 2013 MBA - I'm getting better battery life, everything I've used so far is still rock solid, and I'm also super enjoying full screen multi-monitor support - by far the thing that I wanted most.

Downloading it today on my 2010 17" MBP.

Given the bloated and expensive nightmare that Windows 8.1 still remains, it's both refreshing to receive the latest OS X free, and have it work nicely out of the box. I'm sure there are bugs to be ironed out, but this was the earliest I've ever adopted an OS X revision and so far, the happiest I've been.

I have to agree. I had to pay out the rear to get my Surface RT upgraded to 8.1. The same with my MBA that has a Windows 8.1 (formerly 8) partition on it.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

7% of OS X users is a much smaller amount than 7% of Windows users. This is an amazing thing, true, but let's not blow it out of proportion.

He wasn't talking about users.

He was talking about happy users :D

Surprisingly, I haven't downloaded it yet. Normally I'd download, and install ASAP but I've been busy. I'll probably download it tomorrow.

Does Mavericks Take Less Space Than ML?

I noticed that after updating to Mavericks, I had 10GB freed up on my SSD hard drive.

I have a mid-2012 MacBook Air.

Has anyone else noticed this increase in hard drive space?

Free has a way of driving adoption and so does a "one-click" install (well, two clicks to check for updates and another to choose the update and then you have to click through a few dialogs, but still... It's easier than opening a can of soda, e.g.)

Yeah, I'm in the middle of a project and there's no way I'll even start to think about updating my desktop until that's done... If just one thing breaks in my toolset it isn't worth it. I'm taking a small risk even updating my laptop since it would have to do if my main machine went down.

I am roughly an hour away from using Mavericks... In comparison I still haven't upped to windows 8.1, becuae the damn store doesn't work for me... Hasn't worked in the last 8 months since I upped to windows 8... And none of the apps (inbuilt mail, music, photos, etc.) have ever worked... On the 2 machines that I upped to windows 8.... I have tried everything to make them work... All the threads on the microsoft support site give the same copy paste solutions which don't work... And I am not gonna try anymore...

So, having proper functioning apps go a long way in helping adoption rates....

he is free of that condescending attitude that cook, schiller, ive and cue have (which can work if you have charm which they dont).

he seems like a good relatable guy

You don't like Schiller?

Cue I worry about. Always looks like he put a martini down before walking on stage

My first impressions are positive. Free is good. The download was available sooner than I expected. The update went smoothly except for lingering with "...less than one minute remaining" or something like that.

After the install, I had warnings from a couple of programs that I will have to shelve for now (CC Cleaner, Tech Tools), but the OS itself is working fine so far.

Still on Snow Leopard here.
It. Just. Works.

Me too. I can't seem to make the move. I LOVE Snow Leopard.

But I'd like to get some of those new features and better integration with my iphone and ipad.

Somebody, please convince me that I'm just too conservative and the new OS is as good, solid, simple, intuitive, etc. as SL!

Never been able to stay awake during one of his presentations.

You need to smoke more meth.

Haha, so true! :D I thought it was just me. And those sleeves yesterday, lol. He's like a weird combo: a very geeky ... party animal. Hmm. Schiller is OK, Ferenghi is pretty good, Cue... Yeah, he's the guy.

I have a rMBP hooked up to a 27" ACD at work. After installing and playing around, I noticed my hidden dock is now hard to pop up when going back and forth from screen to screen - you have to try to find the sweet spot or something.

This morning when I hooked up to my display, I opened my laptop and you can see both displays wake up (from sleep) but no password panel prompt - just missed notifications pop in the upper right. I had to unhook my ACD to get it to prompt on my laptop alone. Hope it was a one-time thing...

Should have expected it, but totally flawless download and installation. Never had anything else. And they gave me all the iWork apps for nothing; I guess because I got my 5S in September.

Apple is the best. Can't wait to get my new Mac Pro in December!

downloaded it yesterday, love it, proud to be among the 7%, already had my money waiting but since its free, i'll just it for other apps :D

guess he is in the middle of the two packs.

craig kinda gives of the everyman vibe and uses himself as an example (however genuine that was). it just feels like he is the person he portrays himself on stage. the others (not included roger) to me suffer from a god complex to varying degrees.

You've already told yourself why you need to upgrade.

While Mavericks is growing rapidly, it still represents a small fraction of the Mac user base, with GoSquared's numbers showing just under 50% of traffic coming from OS X Mountain Lion and almost all of the remainder split nearly evenly between OS X Lion and OS X Snow Leopared. Users on any of those systems can upgrade directly to Mavericks at no cost through the Mac App Store.

Unless, of course, you have hardware that is only six years old (mid-2007 MacBook) that is artificially locked at 10.7.x forever :/

The system still runs great (esp. after upgraded to SSD!), but no way to update it to the latest and greatest.

I installed it on my 13" rMBP as soon as it became available. Everything is more responsive. What's great is after the update I gained about 5GB of free space on the SSD, as it seems to be the norm with every update, unlike on my Windows computers after each update gigs and gigs of free space just disappear.

You need to smoke more meth.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not a smoker. Last evening my MBA was slipping from my lap as I awakened during the keynote.

Do you think that is part of Apple's marketing program? Customers replacing computers damaged during Apple induced sleep ;)

No complaints!

I may not have a Mac, but I do have a Hackintosh, and Mavericks is a great upgrade! The iOS and OSX interfaces are starting to converge and I like it!

Also, the Safari push notifications are cool, I love getting notified whenever there's a new MacRumors story. Y'all should sign up.

PS- MacRumors, make an iOS App!

I interpret that ~8% number as the percentage of Mac owners that pay attention to tech news on a daily basis.

i like this. mavericks polishes mountain lion as mountain lion did to lion. why do we subsrcibe to a "new" OS only to realise that the previous version has/d been (just) perfected? various older macs of mine run perfectly on older OSs. i especially miss tiger.

Agreed. I'd also add that he seems genuinely excited about the product and what it'll mean to people, rather than the others who to me feel like they're going through the motions, trying to convince people they've done something great that must be purchased whilst actually thinking about their new Bentley/Yacht/Plane that they intend to order after the next sales figures are announced.
