i thought they weren't allowed to release free upgrades?
(this was the argument for the 20$ a few years back..!)

If you need it for work, I'd wait. I'm doing the same. I need CS6 as well as VMware. Hopefully we can hear from testers.

All my Adobe CC apps run perfectly fine, if not slightly better now. I would imagine CS6 would be the same, but don't quote me on it.

D.

ios 7.0.3 has been released and you can also disable the zooming effects (but i quite like them)

Wonder if Mavericks being free will make Microsoft change and make windows 8 upgrades free as well.

iOS 7 was free and I got a whole bunch of bugs with it, should I expect the same for Mavericks?

I thought I heard him say you can upgrade even if u're still using Snow Leopard! Why does the article say Lion and above?!

That's 7 Years ago! Why are people expecting to update machines from over more than half a decade and why would you want to? Modern software is optimized for modern machines. If you could install it, you'll probably just run into more problems than benefits.

Nothing against older machines, but there's a certain point where you the benefits of the new software can't keep up with old hardware, which leads to a bad experience.

We all know apple sets arbitrary limits as to what's "acceptable" for their software updates. I didn't expect this to work since I couldn't install ML, but when they said computers all the way back from SL would be able to, I had a little bit of hope.

I plan on getting a new laptop anyways, so I would just be trying it out until the new one gets here.

Loving how snappy Safari is! For real! Still no updates through for iWork or iLife yet though.

The cheapest ive found Windows 8 for in the UK is £70 (and thats for the standard edition). But i use Windows 7 on my pc now and im tired of windows and all the lag and problems im having with it. My next upgrade will be to Mac and i cant wait. Apple announcing Mac users getting Mavericks for free was a wow moment for me im truly jealous of you guys Apple FTW :apple: :)

You can, but at 5.3 GB each download, that can add up and potentially bust your monthly data cap (if you are a sucker like me in the US at the mercy of douchebag cablecos). My cap is 200 GB per month, but I know some are even lower. So if I upgraded 4 machines separately, that would eat up 10% of my monthly cap. And anyone who watches a lot of Netflix is probably already using a lot of data.

Yeah, I moved to a business class at the homestead - no data caps, much better service and support (designated rep), and apparently some differences upstream resulting in better average throughput (I'm seeing about 30-35% over my rated speeds). Also static IPs available (though that was an option on my previous residential spec DSL too).

Funny about the Netflix thing, our previous cap was 150GB, and while we have pretty high use, it only got close a few times, then the wife was in bed after an operation for a couple of weeks, LOTS of Netflix - got an ugly notice from AT&T about exceeding the cap (by a "bunch" :D ).

This is crazy good! You can make a jump from Snow all the way to Mavericks. There has to be a gotcha. Free isn't always bad. It works over on the Linux side. But I'm not about to toast my MBP, just yet. Where did i put the mini? It's a good move on Apple's part. If you just bought a Mac you're getting latest and greatest. Have a mac, you can get it. It's early christmas. Who says Mr Timmy can't come with a good CEO decision?

The gotcha is Apple knows the value of their company lies in their ecosystem and keeping people entangled in it. With iOS and Osx becoming more and more cross compatible these moves are designed to bring apple users even closer to the bossom. It expands Mac users to iOS users and vice versa. It makes the idea of leaving the apple ecosystem much more difficult. Free os upgrades and a quality app suite for free on mobile, desktop and web?

This is a big play by apple and it is for our souls. Is apple giving up a decent chunk of change by giving away Mavericks? Yes. However with their cash reserves it becomes a shrewd long-term investment. They have taken a step in the PC market that nobody else can match, even if they wanted to do so.

Especially since a "clean install" has never been one of the OSX install options. It's a fiction.

Anyway, the How to Upgrade page oddly instructs you to check "More Info" in "About this Mac" to determine if your hardware is eligible. Unfortunately this info is not actually available in that location. To find out if your iMac 7,1 is a "mid-2007" model you have look it up somewhere else, such as MacTracker.

That's definitely not true. Hit "More Info" and you get this beautiful window.

stuck at 2.2 gb

got to 2.2 quickly then it slowed to nothing

Wondering if I should pause then resume.

wondering if I pause or disconnect at work if it will pick back up a 2.2 when I resume at home ...

thoughts?

I don't recall downloading anything this large from Apple before...5.9 GBs. Where does it download into? I have a folder called Downloads that I use for downloading with my web browser, but I'm not sure where the App Store downloads... ???

Anybody doing a clean install?

I am going to eventually do that. First, I think I will create a new partition, install Mavericks in the new partition and then see what applications will not work with Mavericks. When I do the update I do plan on doing a clean install and transistioning over the user accounts by copying over only the needed user data. Once I have evrything working I will deleted the old user accounts. I perfer to update major OS X releases this way.

Downloaded it but when running the installer, it says it can't install to my Mac HD because it's used for Time machine backups! WTH? I have a separate Firewire drive for Time Machine.
Any advice?
