If I install 10.9 GM, will I be able to receive the regular upcoming updates (10.9.1, etc.) via Software Update, or I'll have to reinstall/update to final/commercial version of 10.9?
Normally the GM build is the final version that's being shipped to customers.

It's not called golden master for nothing.

Yes. All public updates will update the GM. They are all free downloads.

Thanks, it's just that I think I recall a friend of mine that had installed the GM version of ML 10.8 and for some reason he's stuck at 10.8 and he's not receiving via Software Update any of the 10.8.x major updates...

Then he's really on a DP of 10.8, he only thinks he's on the GM.

It works the same way with iOS, only iOS betas expire.

Yeah, thank you for your reply, but just like I replied to tywebb13, a friend of mine that had installed the GM version of ML 10.8 is stuck at 10.8 and he's not receiving now any of the 10.8.x major updates!

Then he didn't install the GM.

Don't know why that would be. I have three Macs, and I moved from Dev builds, to the GM build on all three for both Lion and Mountain Lion. I have never had any problems with the 10.x.x updates being offered and downloaded.

That article is almost three years old. While the Mac business still makes good money, it pales in comparison to the iOS products. At some point Apple is going to reach the conclusion the Mac is an unnecessary distraction as returns increasingly diminish and they struggle to meet demand for the iOS devices like iPhone and iPad.

Indeed, you only have to look at the lack of updates to Mac hardware in the last 24 months to realise the lack of importance Apple attributes to the Mac side of the business.

The lack of updates from Intel are mainly responsible for that. Apple updates its mac line whenever they can get new generation of CPU's. And the trend is gonna break. Intel will be delivering less and less updates to desktop/mobile CPU lines and will focus more on ultra mobile market like everyone else, so Apple will have fewer and fewer updates.

Thanks for your reply as well, it should be this way. I had installed iOS 7 GM on my iPhone 5, but since I wasn't sure if I would be able to receive future updates (and neither was I sure if I was missing out something from the final public version) I went ahead and updated GM with the IPSW of the final public version.

Yes, it's you guys that is most probably right and my friend THINKS that he has the GM installed, but more likely all that he's got is a DP of 10.8

So, which of these two is the 'right one', or more correctly, in which cases should each of them be used?

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.9\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.9\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction

Yep that's the main glue for the time being. But who knows how long those development tools will be tied to OS X.

While Apple does sell many more iOS devices than Macs, 3.8 million (the number they sold last quarter) is still a bunch. They're still making a ton of money from OS X, and while tablet and mobile devices are developing into the predominant means of computing, and will take over at some point in the future we're not there yet. And frankly we're really not that close.

Apple would be idiots to walk away from the traditional desktop/notebook computing market right now. There's still plenty of profit to be made there, and there will be for some time. And, in fact Apple is making most of that profit.

I'm a little rusty on my Sea Lion knowledge....

Off topic a little...

I need a 'Sea Lion' sticker (or 'Sea Lion Inside' like 'Intel Inside') for my new MacBook Pro.

Sea Lions (or Seals) exist right in San Francisco on Pier 39. Why would Apple say that they wanted to use something Californian like 'Mavericks', when Sea Lions are the perfect transition from Cats as they're Lions and also in California!

Pretty disappointing that from what i've seen they're releasing Mavericks after iOS7 but still has all the old iOS6 design, like the folders etc.

Anyone know if they've at least updated iMessage or does that even still have the old iOS 6 bubbles?

Should? Really?

I mean while we're making demands, I think Apple SHOULD pay me one million dollars to install it.

To be fair there are certainly some benefits to making it a free upgrade aside from the obvious end user benefit. Adoption rates would likely shoot up to something approaching iOS levels which helps both devs and Apple reduce the number of versions they realistically need to support. Perhaps more importantly for Apple it helps remove one of the few remaining pain points in the OS X / Windows comparisons, namely that Windows gets service packs for free while you have to pay for the point releases on OS X. And before anyone says it, yes I know that's not fair to Apple but it's a view an awful lot of users have.

And then there's iOS... Increasingly OS X and iOS are walking together in certain areas. Just as a quick example let's go with iCloud Keychain. Explaining to users that they need to spend $30 on the latest OS X version to get functionality that they just got free on their iPhone is a really tricky sell and as those links get stronger it gets increasingly hard to justify.

Now that's not to say that they *should* do it or even that they will, just that there's a case to be made that it's the smart move. Personally... I think they'll do it. Only a couple of weeks away from a likely event, GM ready, no price announced and certainly no need of the money they'd make from the upgrade if they did charge for it? Oh, and of course Windows 8.1 coming out as for free as well... it just feels like the sort of thing Apple would do, especially at an event that's increasingly feeling like it'll be targeted at Pros and content creation.

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.9\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.9\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction

The first is for the GM installer (and any subsequent one whose installer has the same name)

The second is only for DP4.

Assuming apple continue to use the createinstallmedia executable file in this way, but from time to time change the installer file name (and I am thinking even beyond mavericks here), you can easily modify this code accordingly.

I second this idea! I wouldn't put it on my notebook but it would look awesome next to my office door!

Note to folks who connect to an internal software update server (SUS), I had to log out from my Open Directory account (that is set to check our SUS) and into a local (non directory) account in order to grab the download.

Could have been a fluke but the App store acted like it couldn't download the GM from my Open Directory user account, I'm assuming because the SUS is in place though that shouldn't matter since it's a fresh install.

YMMV

someone posted in another forum that the iPhoto welcome screen GUI is now flat? what about the actual application itself? no changes?

Does anybody know which Macs Mavericks will run on? I have a 2010 Mac Mini that is currently running Mountain Lion and wonder if Mavericks is supported on this device.

If your Mac supports Mountain Lion, you may install Mavericks.
