We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we've got in the pipeline

so new iPhone, new iPods, new MacBook Pros, and a smaller iPad? Interesting.

I'm surprised no one picked up on the fact that Tim kept saying over and over they are going to keep a maniacal focus, as they always have, on making only the best possible products. Larger iphones and smaller iPads don't strike me as likely. Especially since Tim explicitly said he thought going 100$ cheaper on the iPad 2 was a very good way to address the lower income market.

At one point it did sound like they hinted at some product being delayed due to them waiting on regulatory approval. I wonder if that means a new Retina 13" MBP or new iMacs.

Thank you so much to the MacRumors people for writing the news correctly. I saw a few stories elsewhere that said Mountain Lion would *ship* Wednesday. There will be no "shipping" of this product aside from the vast minority of purchases made for more money at Apple Retail Stores on a USB flash drive. It will release, go on sale, unveil, whatever. Kudos.

Wish it was ready now so I could download before going to bed, but it can wait a few hours. The previous upgrades have gone off without a hitch, so *knock on wood* I'm excited to see what all 10.8 has.

You need a win7/win vista (xp?) license to buy the $40 upgrade. That would be that, $100-$200+ extra?

When you buy a Windows PC (the hardware) you get windows, so for 99,9% of the users thats not a issue... Same story when you buy a Mac, you get iOS as part of the deal... So for most Windows Users that is not going to be a relevant problem...

However, if you build your own hardware or wish to dualboot your mac, you might have a point. The retail price for Windows 8 has not been announced yet.

I have 3 macs, total cost for update $20.
Does the windows upgrade include multiple machines or is it $40 / computer?

Nothing has been official announced yet, but everything seems to be like in the past where you could buy windows/office for home/students that allowed you to install on 3/5 computers. If you look that the Office 365 announcement, I'd asume that these offers will continue... But we''ll need to wait for another month to find out for sure... :)

Not sure what OS you're talking about, but Windows 8 that will be available next month will have an upgrade price of 39$, and you get skydrive (Microsoft's version of iCloud) for free...

So at the end of the day, Microsoft has a cheaper solution...

They must have some catch. No Ultimate version for like $200? Unless they've seen the light, 7 different feature packed versions of an operating system is just insane.

So it's gonna roll out on 25th... Australians must be nervous now... :D

What is the advantage of a fresh install? Bought an external drive yesterday and backed up my MacBook Pro but I just don't trust it. Surely because I backed up on lion, if i restore in ML it won't play nice?

Also, does your mac really go exactly how it was before from time machine if you restore from an external?

its done that for me always. I've even used a manual time machine backup in order to get data and files from a Leopard running intel Mac mini to my eMac & G4 Tower running panther. No issues even there. Even doing an automatic restore between my old MB running leopard and MBP when it was running snow leopard its been fine.

Time Machine works well used it lots of times, you will just need to re-enter some passwords and things like office will require you to enter your key again

Sure it's being 'shipped', it's being shipped over the interwebs, lol, straight to the Mac App Store. Where, when you walk thru the front doors, you'll see a huge display right there in front of you that says "Mountain Lion". When you check out the display, a new, fresh copy will be there waiting for you ;)

A fresh install doesn't really give much of an advantage. This isn't Windows. Just perform disk maintenance before upgrading and you should be fine. Most apps have all got themselves ML ready so you shouldn't really experience any major compatibility problems with upgrading.

A clean install wouldn't really be an option for me anyway seeing as my hard drive enclosure is buggered so I can't restore from backup. :(

Around 4-5 hours still till it'll be seen in the app store (at a guess). I hate waiting. :(

question, how do you do disk maintenance?

Nope. I bet I'll torrent it faster than you guys get it via MAS. :)
And you'll be checking the SHA-1 digest with Apple to make sure that no one has seeded a copy of the OS that contains malware?

One of the major trojan attacks on OS X was a torrented copy of iLife (or iWork?) that had malware within it. A rogue OS is clearly a massively greater security problem than a rogue app.

Is the risk of a completely compromised OS really worth the saving of twenty bucks and an hour of your time?

Mostly psychological. The OS installation is designed to replace the old OS. Most of the danger from any "vestigial cruft" left from your old installation is likely to be in your user account's preferences, which you are then adding back anyway.

I've never reinstalled the OS from a Time Machine backup, particularly downgrading across major versions. It's likely that it will work. There has been talk of problems trying to use ML's Internet Recovery partition to downgrade to Lion.
For complete piece of mind, you want to use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to create an entire image of your current disk, which you can then restore. Or make sure you've got a disk image of the Lion installer (lots of instructions on the internet for getting the InstallESD.dmg file.)
But to be honest, most people choose to downgrade because they don't like a feature, rather than because of any actual problems.

Are you all going to upgrade straight away?

My colleague has just moved back to Snow Leopard, the performance is clear that SL is an excellent OS.

I have found Lion to be nice, but I too have suffered on performance.

For the sake of £20, I am more than happy to try ML, but if we are still having some issues, I will be rolling back to SL.

Fingers crossed :)
