Thanks for the info, I don't have SL here because SL doesn't exist yet. I think this is worth complaining only when the beast is out...not now when it's just an unreleased beta.
True, but it's likely the options will remain this way for good. Apple tends to simplify many choices, so I somehow can't see them reverting back to the old behavior.

Chances are they changed it because a small percentage of users actually messed with sub-pixel rendering.

It's nothing. It's just some "mythical" UI that people are convinced Apple is working on, which they aren't. All we are seeing are Aqua refinements, improvements and evolutions. People are kidding themselves with all this "Marble" talk.

Or maybe the people on the other side of this argument are kidding themselves.

"Marble"

Look at it this way. How stupid would it be for Apple to display Snow Leopard for everyone in the world to see a few weeks back, and forget to include a total UI graphical overhaul? It's not going to happen. There is no marble, and if there is it won't make Snow Leopard. :)

The same thing happened with Leopard. It was shown with Tiger's GUI and then changed.

Really. Of people would just take the time to look around. And oh no, search.

No.

Go look again.

in SL there are no OPTIONS (i.e. Automatic, Standard, Light, medium, strong) for font smoothing, there is only "on" or "off"

and

it is obvious that very few of you have any real knowledge of typography besides a cursory knowledge of the 10 web-fonts you look at all day long.

Is Apple actually abandoning its original core user base, that being graphic artists?

Thanks Apple, for dumbing down the OS for your new core user base of "joe (non graphic designer) 6-pack."

I'm using Leopard and don't have SL, if that's what you're saying.

You mean Joe the Plumber :).

(for shake n Bake)

So I guess in you quest to be a mega-fanboy you decided to toss knowledge out the window.....

duh, this thread is about SL, not the OS we all have already, that being 10.5

Yes, and this has been painfully obvious since the return of Steve Jobs in 1997. Going after "John Q. Average" is a far more lucrative and profitable market than is one based around graphic designers and so-called "professionals."

I know for a fact that the look of fonts on OS X is a main reason for all types of graphic designers sticking with Mac.

If Apple dumbs-down this one unique aspect of OS X I will seriously consider moving over to Windows...

Adobe is already more in the Windows camp than in Apple's camp.....not much reason to stay for me if the look of fonts gets the dumb-down!

Or you could just stick with Leopard. You don't have to upgrade.

You mean the same "professionals" that abandoned Apple in the late 90s for Windows, just like Adobe did?

Correct, and this is where I am at right now. I will not upgrade to SL...But, down the road when I need a new machine (and maybe new OS choice) I will have to make this decision.

On a side note, I see no difference when changing the "Font smoothing style" in Leopard, neither on the Macbook's display, nor on the external. Maybe that's why they took it out?
For some reason, you have to reboot, or at least log out/in, for it to take effect.

The differences are thoroughly noticeable.

Yep, search. Spotlight ALONE is worth more than any version of Windows...don't even remind of my Outlook searches when at work...finding a specific email is a mess.
Now if searching in Mail worked like it did in Tiger. I can't find my mail anymore. ;_;

If you have the income for it.

I can see it happening again. It's tough when you see them eying the single socket Bloomfield/Gainestown systems.

Looks like Apple is pushing yet another flavor of the month with the GUI styling. I know there are going to be complaints if it's not properly implemented system and application wide. Blue scroll bars and aqua buttons come to mind.

The new build also includes new graphics drivers. Multisampling works on games now. Also the quartz seems more responsive now. It's getting close to a finished product.

I have Leopard, but I'll be buying Snow Leopard for $129 instead of $29 because it's worth way more than that to me, and a healthy markup is what allowed Apple to become what they are, so I will continue to do my part. Thanks for your hard work, Apple. Keep it up.

If you send me that $100 I will make sure it get's into Apple's hands safe and sound. Maybe half of a new iPhone 3GS, or a MobileMe subscription - but I promise it will be well spent.

Could the Apple fanboys please stand up... please stand up.... please stand up.

Um, we're standing all around you? You're in our house, man!

Funny thing to say in a COMMENT. :)

That's beyond fanboyism. That's like... cult...ism. :p

'Fan' is short for fanatic. People in cults are fanatics. So really ... what's the difference?

Ah, good to know, thanks. Doesn't say anywhere I need to reboot, not even in the Documentation.

I'm about as far from a fanboy as you can get. I can expand if you like.

And if you care (which I'm sure you don't), It sounded like the person I quoted was talking about Leopard.

If you look a tad closer at the new list style, you'll notice a few things. Not only is the list transparent so that you can see what's behind it, but this is the first UI in OS X that slightly blurs what's behind it as well in a Windows Vista fashion. It should also be noted that the list view blurs it's backgrounds but the grid view does not (yet).

Also, the clear, transparent border of the list view is incredibly sloppy for some reason, especially around the arrow attached to the bottom. It's almost as if the graphics are being redrawn or resized on the spot, which I believe could be hinting towards some form of Resolution Independence we've been speculating over for the past couple of years.

There is something amiss with this new style and I'm going to get to the bottom of it, but I can say for sure that it was designed separately from the grid view style, even though they are very much identical. I suspect we'll be seing more of this "HUD" style in other various places soon...

Applications launched after the settings change use the new setting. If you change the setting then quit and open an app it will show with the new settings.
