edit: looks fine in this picture (lower) Mk2 posted. The longer volume slider is better but I don't recognise the four squares icon.

The 'four squares' is for chapter selection on movies that support them. (Works the same way on iPhone btw.)

Is anyone else having the problem where their trash takes super long to empty? It consistently takes my snow leopard install 20 minutes or so to clear out a few megabytes. Any suggestions (and don't say "Don't use a beta OS")? I was hoping this would be fixed by the new build, but alas...

Aw, man. Hope they include it.
How would it work, though? You can't select something in Stacks without it activating, and hovering then pressing the Space bar would be non-discoverable, since there's no indication that any action will be performed. (In list/grid views, there is at least a highlight indicating that something has been selected, and a context-sensitive "Quick Look" button in the toolbar also appears.)

Who am I? Apple?

I suppose you could hover the cursor over an item, or use the arrow keys, and hit the spacebar. Or enable right-click/multi-touch functions?

Sorting in stacks still doesn't work beyond the first level of the tree. It worked fine in Leopard.

The steps they have taken with Services are very promising, but the 'Open Selected File in TextEdit' service still doesn't show up anywhere even when it is enabled; a shame as I could foresee it being quite useful.

Speaking of TextEdit, the zoom widget still doesn't work appropriately in it for RTF files at >100% zoom. It also really needs separate preferences for plain text and RTF.

Perian works now. The pref pane causes Sys Prefs to relaunch in 32 bit mode. I tried an avi film that would not work before and it plays, so at least some functionality is retained.

Battery and heat issues with SL?

Has anyone else experienced super hot running temps on the macbook pro while running SL? I've gotten up to 180 F running normal fan speeds and sitting on a flat table top. I am not sure this has anything to do with SL, but that is crazy!

Also, ever since updating to about 2 builds ago where the battery was supposed to last longer, on full charge mine went down to saying 2.5 maybe 3.5 battery life.. considering i'm supposed to be getting up to 7 or 8 this seems really weird to me...

anyone else with these problems?

minimized apps work with exposé

did anyone else notice that you can now see your minimized apps while in exposé?
I don't know if this was available previously or if this is new.

This has actually been in the last 3 updates. The one before this one IMO was better. Now they are back to the small box under the main box. The one before made each window the size it needed to be to fit them all on the screen. I hope they go back to that one, cause this one is dumb IMO

Yep, that was available previously.

Something I just noticed - stacks in grid view now blur whatever happens to be in the background the same way the new list view does.

EDIT: Also, the button in the trash is different (I know that's minor, but since the button for resizing icons in the Finder received so much attention, I thought I'd mention it)

Can I just say... Snow Leopard looks AMAZINGLY good. I mean... I know it's faster and better, but the UI is really looking sharp! I'm glad they're fixing all of the UI bugs.

It looks GREAT!

Are you sure the trash button isn't just because there's no trash in the first screenshot and there is trash to empty in the second screenshot? One looks like it's grayed out and one looks like it's active.

I have to say though... Apple is really spiffing up the UI. I like it!

I think he's comparing both versions to the current button (which is a light gray instead of the dark shown in his pics).

That's right. Here's what the button looks like in Leopard, just for reference.

I'm guessing this bothers you then too:

Inactive Window Using Graphite Theme: Look at the button on the right.
attachment.php

Inactive Window Using Aqua Theme: All buttons are the same color (the way it should be)
attachment.php

I had reported that to Apple ages ago but they don't seem to care :(

Just tried Graphite in SL. It has been fixed.

Horray!!! I'm so excited now!!!

Edit: Wait hold on. For some reason it looks fine in Carbon apps, but apps like Safari, iChat or anything coded with Cocoa it looks bad. Did you check a Cocoa app or a Carbon app?
