so the default install is an an Archive? and you cant install on a blank drive? WHAT? i will still be doing an erase and install as i know how to transfer my data and settings and it allows me to unclutter large files.

if QuickTime Player X has no preference option to play files when you open them im affraid ill just have to install version 7, this feature is just far too valuable for me than a new UI.

reinstalling and keeping the version number is cool! that was always a niggle for me as i would have to re-download the large update files on a download cap. it must know which system files have been modified by updates and not overwrite them.

I'm with people that it's kinda dumb that they moved Archive and Install and Erase and Install, but at the same time, part of what makes Apple products, OS X in particular, so great is that they're really powerful and can do a lot, but on the surface level they are really basic and easy to use, for people that just get confused by more functionality.

In layman's terms, does this mean that I'll just have to pop the disk(s) into my drive and let the Snow Leopard installer do everything for me?

i wonder if SL will be an early sept release...

see the problem is that apple will be launching new ipods very soon and so from a homepage advertising point of view they prob want to dedicate as much space to the ipod. So it make sense to release SL and advertise it for a couple of weeks (Since its mainly a "tune up" release) before going crazy with the new ipods. prob be wrong tho.:D

I agree, I mean Apple already explains what it is going to do. I would hope that they could work on other things like a new interface as opposed to concerns as to whether or not Erase & Install confuses users.

The only thing that worries me about this is what if it was an update package that cause the issue, or there were other corrupt files it "thinks" it should keep. I really didn't mind doing an install then just grabbing the combo updater and installing that.

I mean, they did it the last time with Leopard... They launched the iPhone and the aluminum iMac's very close to each other.

I would suspect the rumor about SL reaching GM is in fact true. If you go to Apple's website and go to the Mac OS X page, it defaults to Snow Leopard now, not Leopard.
It's been like that since WWDC...

Same... I love my Leopard T-Shirt
How many shirts do they usually give away? Do you have to be the first 10? 100?
And anyone care to explain what exactly is Rosetta?

The last GM to OS X was I believe 7 days, which I was most people seem to be calling BS on the GM statements.

That's because Leopard was running late and probably not quite ready (although this is a hard, subjective decision to make - and there will be faults with Snow Leopard as well).

To me it looks like lessons have been learnt and procedures have changed. If they press now, then they can send some of the boxes by container ship (depending on their release date) rather than plane, which is probably more expensive.

Apple aren't quite as arrogant and bloody minded as many of the tech press like to make out.

Well if that's the case, I'd think you'd still be free to grab the combo updater and run it. There's nothing stopping you from running it on an already updated system.

iThink Apple will do whatever they so choose. I do not think that Apple would release Snow Leopard early.

I just miss the old days of doing everything manually...especially jumper pins, I guess I've always had troubles warming up to computers doing for me what I can easily do for myself. (plug and play was a beast for me to adopt)
I'll get over it the first time I do it I'm sure

So does this mean that you can't install SL on a separate blank drive (either internal of external) to test it out?

I have a Mac Pro, and I know when Leopard came out, I installed it on a second internal drive and booted to that to a) play with it and b) make sure it worked ok while still keeping my Tiger install up and running.

Large debate going on, with no real conclusion. It would seem that they would have to require Leopard on the drive given the pricing and upgrade bundle, etc. etc. etc.

Thread on it here.

haha you quoted me mid edit. i would probably recommend a clean install if you canot boot up after an update. ive never had a problem after an update though. people might become too impatient while it is rebooting or starting up and press the power button which is the critical stage or the update process, causing corrupt files and an unfinished update.

::Keeps fingers crossed that if anything they just require you to pop in the Leopard DVD as proof, rather than a fully installed copy of Leopard::

I plan on going just for the T-Shirts.

Same... I love my Leopard T-Shirt

Good point! I was planning on going to the store anyway, but I forgot about the shirts. I haven't even opened my Leopard shirt.

I'm not sure how many shirts they had, but it looked like a lot. My bet is that if you go launch day, you'll get a shirt.

And Rosetta enables applications compiled for the PowerPC family of processors to run on Apple systems that use Intel processors.

What if you have a Mac Pro and want to install 10.6 on a blank HD? Once I install 10.6 on a blank drive I will erase 10.5 that is on the other drive.

I would imagine that you could install it. The question is just whether it is going to require a copy of Leopard and depending on whether it needs to be on that drive.
