Apparently my library is too big. If I want iCloud photo it'll be 99 cents a month. I deleted a lot of photos that I thought I'd already deleted.

Maybe when it leaves beta, I'll consider paying, but seriously, with all the competitors offering more for less? Doubtful.

Just installed this Beta and my late-2013 rMBP feels a lot more responsive now.

Anyone else noticed the same?

Not really liking the Photos app though which is a shame. Think i'll be sticking with Lightroom

Uh-oh..

"Early reviews have suggested the new software improves upon iPhoto, but leaves out many power features Aperture users have become accustomed to."

But no worries...all is well. Apple is innovating in Emoji Engineering.

"Along with the Photos app, OS X 10.10.3 also includes a redesigned single-page emoji picker that's organized into categories, and it introduces new diversified emoji and emoji skin tone modifiers. There are also new flag emoji for many countries, and some updates to existing emoji to better reflect Apple products -- the watch emoji is now an Apple Watch, the cell phone resembles an iPhone 6, and the computer is an iMac."

Does anyone know why all the pictures are now not in order of date added or date taken when viewing Albums > All Photos?

Is there a way I can get them back to being in order by date?

700+ photos, videos, slo motion....all took 20 min and is now on all my devices!Great job  and also my macbook air 2012 is more responsive at all!

Did anyone else get this email?

Since when has it been a public beta??!

So how does the new photos app work with 2 libraries, an iPhoto one and an aperture one? Can I keep them separate in photos or do they have to be combined?

You can have separate ones. "Opt click" the dock icon to choose which Lib to open after created.

Since today. ;)

i made a smart album (shows all photos, minus some work files), and in THAT album, you can control-click on the album name and uncheck "sort by name"...

So this is what all those pro video editors felt like when Final Cut Pro X was released...

RIP Aperture.

Side question: Why is Lightroom so clunky and ugly?

anyone having this issue with the top bar smashing the icons over?

So does photos do away with the iPhoto Events logic altogether? I really liked that and would be sorry to see it gone.

Could anybody please comment on the general stability of 10.10.3 Beta? Thanks!

Not importing iPhoto Library

I've installed and while so far so good with the iCloud library, it didn't ask to import my iPhoto library (and the File Import doesn't appear to be able to select iPhoto either).

Anyone have a similar problem or workaround to get their photos in?

Thanks.

Fixed - Had to alt open the app and start again, choosing the iPhoto library. Seemed by default, since my iPhoto library isn't in the Pictures folder it didn't see it.

Does anyone know if this resolves the issue where transparency turns off with each reboot?

Never heard of that problem personally. Did it happen on 10.10.2 for you too?

----------

Overall the update is safe, the photos app is a bit sketchy though. I set up a test library to see how well the photos would transfer over and it takes a very long time. Mine only took about 10 minutes but that was only for a few photos. Larger libraries are probably going to take much longer. Other than that once it updates everything the photos app is pretty nice to use.

Are you encountering any graphical glitches, Wi-Fi troubles or transparency turning off with every reboot? Thanks.

App works but I can't find an album I made in iPhoto. It made my events from iPhoto into albums which is fine, but an album I had in iPhoto won't show up in the albums tab. The only ay to get to it is to search for it. Pretty stupid error on their part.

edit: My bad. I had it in "iPhoto events" and clicked back and it went to everything else. App is pretty good so far.

There is a part of me that really, really wants to participate in these public betas... but I only have the one Mac and I know it's probably not the best idea to install on my primary computer :-/ I guess I'll just wait with the rest of the regular people

Why don't you just create a second partition to instal and try it on? Leave your current install be, and if anything goes wrong, all your apps, docs, etc. are insulated.

I installed and it went through the process of prepping library for iCloud but then photos crashed and will not stay open for more than 5-6 seconds now. Properly broken. Other than that the release works fine.

Had to upgrade to 200GB for $3.99/mo iCloud storage and I'm currently in the process of uploading nearly 5000 photos from my iPhoto library. Can't wait to finally have my entire photo library in the cloud!

I'm also very interested to see how much local storage I'll be saving on my Mac once I tick the "Optimize Mac Storage" after I finish uploading everything. :D

How large was your library? Also, please post an update when your uploading is complete to let everyone know how long it took. I'm starting with a 40-50GB Aperture library, so I'm a little nervous about the amount of time it will take to complete the uploading process.

When I first rebooted after the update transparency had turned itself off but I turned the setting back on and rebooted again and it seems to be working fine now. No other problems at all except when I turned on iCloud photo library in the photos app and updated, it brought back some old photos that I had deleted a very long time ago, some from even before iOS 8 so I'm not sure where they came from and if anyone has any ideas please let me know because it was very strange. So if you have any deleted memories you don't want to relive, I would hold off on using the photos app. Other than that very stable

innovation is accompanied by at least 2GB in data off my limited provider. I think apple stays up 24/7 trying to figure out how to kill my ISP period limits.

for the person with the menu bar clutter, did you relaunch the finder?
