Just downloaded. Photos app read my 160gb external hard drive Aperture library in about 25 minutes. Photos app is pretty good, compared to my slow iPhoto library. Even on the external drive it's VERY fast! Went ahead and upgraded my iCloud to 200GB/$3.99 month. Finally nice to have easy access to ALL my photos on every device. Very happy so far!

What do people think of the overall "white" interface that changes to a black interface when doing editing? I think it could be confusing to some, but I personally like it because it is an instant indicator of when you're editing as opposed to browsing.

so just because apple is filthy rich they should not charge for things that costs actual money?

personally i think of the markets this creates and as we are seeing they get more and more condensed with only a few companies (mostly the same). storage, office apps, music streaming, voip etc etc.

:)

Does anyone know how to use two iCloud accounts with one photos library? I want my wife's pictures as well as mine to be accessible from one library? It is so annoying they haven't thought of this yet!

What's the deal with Photos Library taking up so much space? What is the point of downloading originals to mac (even in the optimize option, it downloads if there is room). Can we just have originals in the cloud and then a reference thumbnail on devices (unless we specifically choose to also keep originals on device)?

The schematic seems different yet this doesn't work that way.

Also, on an iPhone, turning on Photos Beta removes all pictures that you might have synched over iTunes. Why does that have to happen? Why can't I have both?

Ugh, is a white background the only choice? Last week I complimented Microsoft on the black backgrounds on the new Windows 10 Photos app beta. Based on the video preview it looks like Apple has gone to ugly, white backgrounds. Bright white around photos does not work well.

Some enterprising individual will be able to provide you with a hack. But in the meantime, tell Apple you want a "dark mode" for Photos.

Anyone else having issues with their photos not uploading to iCloud Photo Library at all? After downloading this update I turned it on for both my iPhone and my Mac but both are stuck and not uploading.

----------

And also, how do I access photo stream on Mac Photos? Currently I can only see everything that was in my previous Aperture library and not from anything on my phone.

Emoji problems

Well the new emojis are great in the Messages app but iOS 8.1.3 and older converts them to "aliens."

All of my photos are showing, this is fast and fluid app, but NOT ONE of my iCloud shared libraries is showing. Not one. Not even ones that I don't own but subscribe to, not even my own that I created. I know it's a beta, but still.

I'm also very interested to see how much local storage I'll be saving on my Mac once I tick the "Optimize Mac Storage" after I finish uploading everything. :D

This is what I am wondering. Can I then get the photos off of my computer if I pay for iCloud???

I would love it if I could get the photos on my computer and on my external hard drive to go into the photos app.

Just downloaded. Photos app read my 160gb external hard drive Aperture library in about 25 minutes.

Was the new beta on your external drive? How do you get photos from your external drive onto your computer, the new photos app and iCloud?

----------

also, how important is it that I back up my computer before installing this?

Photos.....

Slightly more capable than iPhoto and far less capable than Aperture. Why are folk so over joyed at it arrival ? The potential for issues with transferring photos with this update is very real. How do you sort out any mess, from your back up afterwards ? iPhoto and Aperture will be gone, I suspect.

Hopefully Mail, Safari and the wifi issues have been resolved. Yosemite has had a less than glorious arrival in our household. The only upside is that I didn't have to pay for all the bugs !

issues after launching photos app for the first time

anyone else having issues launching the photos app after first launch? After i went through setup it took about 15 min to prepare the library, now its just been hanging for over 20 min with the beach ball....

This is not a possibility automatically without user intervention. And even then, you aren't sharing the same library, you are just duplicating content from one person's library to the other. It's been a struggle for me since iOS8 came out and making sure I save my wife's pictures of our kids.

here comes more revenue for Apple from people upgrading their icloud capacity.

as an investor....SWEET!! buy them people, but all your photos on icloud!!!!

Mine just crashes after about a minute.

As far I found 2 key disadvantages of new Photo app:

1. If you wish to use iCloud Photo Library on your Mac you need to increase iCloud storage (pay) or significantly reduce your library on Mac.

2. You can no longer easily copy photos out of Photo App. This is ridicolous - you can try to export but it is not convenient anymore.

I had all my photos in an Aperture library on an external drive, and installed the new OS and selected the external library, it was that simple for me, so far
