Finder version is even higher than OS X version. I've never seen this before.

Shared Albums should address that, no?

As muzzy mate mentions below this can't be done automatically and is super tedious to try selecting every photo to share. It is just really poorly thought out for married couples/families.

Just got my email from Apple regards this public beta release, only problem is it's in French and I can't make out a word of it.
Come on Apple, just because Canada is a bi-lingual country does not mean we are all fluent in both languages...

I'm interested in seeing how iPhoto hands off to Photos in this update.

It doesn't for me..... I have no idea how you tell it that your iPhoto library is on a NAS. So its just an empty library with no way to import from iPhoto as far as I can tell.

As far I found 2 key disadvantages of new Photo app:

1. If you wish to use iCloud Photo Library on your Mac you need to increase iCloud storage (pay) or significantly reduce your library on Mac.

2. You can no longer easily copy photos out of Photo App. This is ridicolous - you can try to export but it is not convenient anymore.

Did I read number 2 right? You just drag the photo wherever you want to put it... drop it. Not sure how they can make it any easier.

So how does the new photos app work with 2 libraries, an iPhoto one and an aperture one? Can I keep them separate in photos or do they have to be combined?

Can I have more than one Library?

Yes. Hold down option when launching Photos to pick a library or create a new one. Only one library can be designated as the System Photo Library. That’s the one that syncs with iCloud.

----------

What's the deal with Photos Library taking up so much space? What is the point of downloading originals to mac (even in the optimize option, it downloads if there is room). Can we just have originals in the cloud and then a reference thumbnail on devices (unless we specifically choose to also keep originals on device)?

The big advantage of Photos is that you don’t need to have your entire photo library anywhere except in iCloud. My iMac’s hard drive isn’t big enough to hold my iPhoto library, so I can’t sync it with Dropbox on this iMac. But I could open that same library in Photos, because almost none of the images would need to be stored locally.

My iPhoto library on an external drive is grayed out in the Export library chooser. :-/ Loads up fine in iPhoto, but can't be selected from Photos.

Is there a 'recently deleted' folder or such in the new OS X Photos app? I can't seem to find it.

Ok, I found it. Though it's accessed via a command rather than a specific folder (File>Show Recently Deleted). Easy...

[with reference to the YouTube video embedded in the original article]

How can it be 2015 and some people still don't know the correct way to set up SoundSticks?! They've been around for 15 years

Now, uploading 160 GB of photos, is insanely slow. I have 10Mbs upload and it's like one photo every five minutes??? Really? Who knows, beta I guess....

Unfortuante

They may have just changed what format the hard drive needs to be. I didn't have any problem converting, opening, using, and saving my photos on my external drive with the photos app.

Which is unfortunate. It's the same drive I use for iPhoto. My library is over 60 GB, so I don't be moving it to my small SSD.

Seems to be the same speed I have been experiencing for years with iDisk, MobileMe, iTunes Match and iCloud. Don't expect any changes soon.

Smart album issue

I used to be able to use a smart album to grab all the photos I had not put in an album yet. This is not working in the Photos beta. My criteria is:

Album is not Any.

This worked fine in iPhoto. Any thoughts or workarounds?

I have a similar sized library and mine stopped about 30% through.

My iMac also was going crazy with the fans and such. Seemed to be using too much power for a photos app.

How much try well......$0. It's not that apple is hurting for cash. Though, if you like the service....pay .....I won't on principal...to each their own.

Just because Apple has money in the bank, all of the sudden you feel ENTITLED for them to provide free services to you? Please. They are a corporation that has shareholders who are their #1 priority. Period.

I've had it open for several hours and it's still pushing 60% CPU usage. How long does it take to settle down? I have a 16K photo library ~ 90 GB or so.

Anyone know where Photos will store the database? I've got a 55 GB iPhoto library on an HDD in an OWC data doubler and only 44 GB on my SSD boot drive; I don't want the Photos database on that SSD.

So, how will that work?

What? Did your Aperture suddenly become unusable today?

So this is what all those pro video editors felt like when Final Cut Pro X was released...

RIP Aperture.

Side question: Why is Lightroom so clunky and ugly?

I am surprised they released it like this in the public beta. I downloaded the beta on Feb 24th and Photos syncing (the initial sync) is terrible. It clogs up the network tremendously. If you look at background processes it is doing some sort of conversion on files, but doesn't have separate queues for processing the conversion and uploading (nor does it seem to process multiple files at once)

If I look at my system log it is constantly giving errors and I have no clue if some files are completely failing or they are false positives.

The only fix is to go into options in Photo and disable the sync...which removes the purpose of the service I just upgraded for to get 200gb of space

I hope this becomes easier to sync and that I will eventually be able to remove the local copies from my computer to free up 80gb of space on my macbook air flash

just a quick question. iPhoto had an option of putting a picture as your facebook profile picture. I cant find this option in Photos app.

If you’re prepared to restore your system from an earlier backup and keep constant backups, and otherwise are not uncomfortable testing potentially buggy software, there’s really no harm. I have been using the minor beta releases of OS X without any problems so far.

This. I would also recommend that you keep a copy of your photo library on an alternate cloud backup like OneDrive or Google Drive, in case something wonky happens to your iCloud Photo Library.

No you don't. Just have everything feed to your main computer just like in iPhoto photo stream. That will still work.

Based upon my library I have to pay 3.99/month to view my photographs from other devices......well I don't think so but if I should ever develop OCD things may change. How much money is enough for Apple....greedy.
