A question came up in the other league about bye week players and trades. Here's my response. I'm posting this because the rules are the same for both leagues and some in this league might have questions.

This league has never had an official rule regarding bye week starters. I know there are some leagues out there that require a weekly "legal line up", meaning every starter must be active and not on a bye week. However, this is not a standard fantasy rule and is not even an optional rule in the settings for ESPN.

I've been running the MR league for three years now and we have tried to keep the game as simple as possible with standard ESPN rules. I have not gone as far as to create a league constitution with extra rules and policies. So far, it has not been needed.

I hear your concern about "collusion" in terms of a team owner leaving in their bye week players purposefully to give the other owner an advantage. However, I don't think this is the case with fireshot. Unfortunately, his team has not done well this year and I think he has just given up and is not paying close attention anymore. Sometimes that happens and when it does I keep that in mind the next year when it comes to sign ups for the league. If you will recall we heavily stress at the beginning of the year that we will only take active team owners.

The veterans of our league can tell you that I have not allowed previous coaches back after they failed to manage their team the previous year. Additionally, I have vetoed trades between teams where one was no longer paying attention and didn't care about his team.

That being said, my general outlook on bye weeks is that it is up the individual owner to manage how they see fit. Some owners pay close attention to bye's even in the draft and make sure not to cross over with their players. Others don't care and are willing to "take a hit" if some of their players end up with the same bye week. I don't see this as collusion, but as varying strategies for how to handle the season as a whole. Now, if you have proof or suspicion that a player is purposefully throwing a game by leaving their bye week players in then please let me know and I will further investigate.

It's funny you should bring up trades as a similar question came up in another league I manage. I ran four leagues this year all with the same rules. Here's what I put in my letter that went out in the other league.

It has come to my attention that there is some confusion about the trading of players in our league and thus, as Commissioner, it is my duty to provide some clarification and general education regarding the process.

THE RULES:
The trade rules for the league can be found on the league settings page at ESPN and are as follows:

Trade Limit – No Limit
Trade Deadline – Wednesday, November 23, 12 PM ET
Trade Review Period – 2 Days
Votes Required to Veto Trade – LM Only Vetos

ESPN further clarifies the Veto process:

“Votes Required to Veto a Trade - As the LM you have the option to select a trade veto policy, which is usually done to prevent collusion between two teams. The default setting is that only you as the LM can veto pending trades and you have the option to allow your fellow league members to vote on it. If you wish to allow your league owners to vote on pending trades, select the number of teams required to veto a trade.”

The standard policy for the league has been the same since it started three years ago and that policy is the ESPN default setting that the League Manager alone has the power to veto a trade. What that means is that when a trade is proposed the players involved have 48 hours to agree to the trade in order for it to process. Once it has been agreed upon the League Manger has to approve or veto the trade. The trade is processed once both players have agreed to the terms and the League Manager has approved the trade. 48 hours is allowed, but not required for the completion of the process.

I then went on to cite several online articles about trade policies that weigh the pros and cons of doing it various ways. The bottom line is I don't like allowing team owners to vote on trades. First, with an online league it's a time consuming process. Someone might not be able to vote or doesn't get to the vote in time. Second, I trust myself to be impartial more than I trust team owners to be impartial. For example, if a trade goes down that makes the team you are tied with for the division lead better, then why wouldn't you veto that trade? Evaluating trades is a difficult process, but from all the research I've done the commonly accepted reason for denying a trade is collusion and I think that league commissioner is in the best position to judge that. If you would like for me to send you a copy of the complete letter I can as it goes into much more detail on the subject.

Can McCoy get me 22 points tonight, and hand mscriv his first loss in the OSX League? I hope so :D

You actually only need 21 and a tie because the tiebreaker rule will give you the win since you have more total WR points.

This one is tough for me because in two other leagues I play in the game will be decided by McCoy as well, but in those league I own McCoy and need him to have a good game. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens tonight. I think I'd rather see McCoy have another great game and win me two leagues while taking the loss in this one. :(

You can take the L, its ok :D I was just pissed that I didnt play Ford, who I was contemplating. He ended up getting 21 points, which would have made my game tonight a lot easier.

You got the 22 you needed sir, congratulations. I never really thought l would go undefeated, but I have to admit that as the weeks kept rolling by the thought was growing on me. :p

*LEAGUE REMINDER*
The trade deadline is coming up in a few weeks which means it's your last chance to make a deal with someone.

I find myself in the position of having 3 solid QB's in Stafford, Newton, and Tebow. So, anyone who might be interested in any of the above feel free to drop me a PM or an email. I'd like to make an upgrade at WR or RB on my team.

Are you really trying to sell that Tebow is a solid quarterback? ;)

You're talking about Tim Tebow, right?

Tebow is definitely a solid fantasy QB! Matthew Berry keeps telling people, "put him in your line up, but don't watch the game". :D

What looks ugly on the field and isn't great for real football turns out to be pretty awesome when it comes to fantasy numbers. This week as my bye week fill in he was tied for the 6th highest scoring player of the week and the 4th highest scoring QB. That means he outscored the likes of Brees, Brady, Big Ben, Romo, Manning, Vick, Schaub, etc. etc.

Wowza...I think you should dump your other losers and start him every week. ;)

I just might depending on what offers I get for Stafford or Newton. Would you like to upgrade from Schaub? I'll gladly take Megatron off your hands.

I need to start Hasselback...he routinely scores more than Schaub. I should have started him this weekend....I still would've been spanked, but it might have looked a bit more respectable.

And, about Megatron...yeah, NO. :D

So then, the results are finalised – and I'd like to offer my commiserations to TwinCities Dan for the humiliating defeat he suffered at Meff Park this week.

I'm not talking about the actual match – his boys were clear winners there – but the post match drinking contest he got embroiled in with Lord Meff in the Directors Lounge after the game.

I'll give TCD credit, I've never seen anyone keep up with our shadowy owner as well as the Boozehounds coach did – but as bottle after bottle of Jägermeister were attached to the feeding tubes on Lord Meff's mask there was only going to be one winner, and it wasn't going to be the guy who's still in possession of his own organs and circulatory system.

None the less, well done on the win in our match up TCD – and the offer of Miles Austin's liver is still on the table should you need it. After all, it seems to be the only bit of him that's still working. :p

Phew... 116-116 against Perpetual Motion Squad, with the win going to me based on the WR tie-breaker (34-33). Talk about winning by a nose... but I'll take 6-3 any day over 5-4! :)

Wrong league, but GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I just needed 3 points from Desean. That fumble he had killed me!!! 3 measly points.

Be very glad that I didn't start mcgahee this week. Bonehead move of the week. DOH!!

Man, am I GLAD I didnt change Moore and Bush. They got me a combined 61 points last night. Great way to start the weekend.

I'm sorry Jaffa, I probably should have posted a reminder. In November the NFL starts having a Thursday night game and on Thanksgiving day there are three games played.

Yeah, I think Moore definitely reaped the benefit of Jacoby Ford tweaking his ankle and having to leave the game. Otherwise I think it would have been Ford who had a big game.

No problem at all, none of my squad had a match scheduled last night otherwise I'd have probably noticed beforehand from my team page.

It's just a good job my team have an away match and not a home one this week, as the hallowed Meff Park pitch was being used for a car boot sale last night. That could have been embarrassing.

...on Thanksgiving day there are three games played.
That'll be a Thursday too, I take it?

Yes, two weeks from yesterday.

And I'd like to point out that, despite it being a difficult year for the Meffs, you are only 1 game out of first place in your division. As I'm sure you already know from your experience in fantasy sports the first goal is to make the playoffs. After that anything can happen. Division winners automatically make the playoffs so you are very much still in the race for the championship.

Indeed, I've been keeping a close eye on our divisional standings. ;)

In terms of fantasy sports experience, traditionally the Association Football leagues I run/participate in don't use a playoff system – reflecting most real life leagues it's simply the case that the team which amasses the most points over the course of the season takes the title. Pros and cons to both systems, of course.

Luckily, although my Meffs have been bloody useless so far I'm cheered by the fact that rdowns' team have been only slightly less bloody useless. :D As long as I can keep pace with his results and then claim a win in our second match, we've got a chance of sneaking in there.

Cut me some slack, my running backs and receivers suck. :D

My plan to win this week is playing the Jaguars defense.

Trade Deadline!

Trade deadline is Wednesday of this week so it's your last chance to make deals. There's been lots of injuries in the NFL so some of you may want to make a move to improve your team as the playoffs are almost here.

I'm still willing to take offers on Tebow, Newton, or Stafford. Although maybe I shouldn't as QB's are dropping left and right.

They sure are...and they're all mine. :(

I seem to be bad luck for quarterbacks. Maybe I should trade for Tom Brady and see if my streak continues.

I'd trade Brady. All I need are running backs, receivers and a tight end (not necessarily football related). :D
