Did they think about, you know, giving the option to not have these updates download automatically? Seems a bit easier.

Shuuurely, this is a 7.1 Beta 2 feature... People with Beta 3, aren't being given the opportunity to download and delete it again... (hence the confusion of some posters above, maybe?)

One of the things the 'current software' does is update itself to newer software. Far as I'm concerned if they don't wish to upgrade for whatever reason, they shouldn't be buying software that is known to update itself.

Seriously though, forcing users to update is a major feature of the platform as it makes it much more secure and allows vulnerabilities to be quickly squashed. Some of them can be done by minor updates that don't have user-centric changes, others cannot. If a user doesn't want the benefits of iOS they shouldn't be using it, nor should they be pressuring Apple into making it less secure for everyone. A pool of people who don't update attracts malware developers to the platform in general, and while they may start with known vulnerabilities on old versions, some of them could branch out...

Next, they are going to force you to take vaccination shots for everything.

Read the article. It is the update files that we cannot get rid of and was downloaded on our device without our approval.

And I don't agree with that. No update file should be downloaded to a users device without them approving it. It appears this is fixing that.

I don't really understand why someone would buy an iphone and then not want to have the latest software that leverages the hardware. For the 4 and 4s barely a maybe understanding, but for the 5, 5c, and 5s -- come on, you got the iphone, now update it and move on. I do hope they leave this in for developers. I totally get wanting to have phones at different iOS levels to test their apps.

Agreed 100% and that's just the thing— for the vast majority of users, automatic OS updates are a feature, not a bug. But if you read MacRumors, you'd be forgiven to think it was the other way around. :)

Of course we all know there's a lot more to a mobile phone operating system than color palettes, icons, and font choices. For instance, the latest and greatest OS revision carries the benefit of security fixes and other critical system optimizations. This is a wonderful thing for everyone who expects their cellphone to be solid and reliable.

However, in the case of a developer's device, I'm surprised there isn't a setting in Xcode to designate a specific attached UDID to whichever OS version one needs for testing, and if that was achieved via disabling automatic updates on said developer's device, so be it.

I've lived by this creed since using apple products starting in 1991. I have always run every update and never regretted it. People who use hacked, stolen or outdated software are usually the whiners who have all the problems. The entire ecosystem is pretty much fool proof and delivers the promise to enhance your digital life. Go whine somewhere else.

Coercion.

OMG Apple wants people to update to their latest software, what a crime.

As I said no one should be forced to update or have an installer file automatically downloaded to their device. But it seems perfectly normal to me that Apple would want people running the latest software on their devices.

Wait, how does an iPhone who is running beta 3 already since this feature is new on beta 3, have a pending update to beta 3 or the installed files are still on the devices since they suppose to delete themselves once the update it's competed?

Yeah, but what do you want to bet that this will happen when iOS 8 is released, too?
I'm all in. This won't happen again, only because iOS 7 already is the worst case. A complete GUI overhaul can't come too often. iOS 8 and 9 will look like iOS 7. So the problem won't come again, but it also won't go away. You can avoid normal problems like Mapgate by simply not opening the app. But you can't run away from the GUI. It's everywhere!

I agree. I'm working in a remote place right now and all our communication is through satellite but we still have wifi. Whenever one of these updates comes out it almost shuts us down as everyones phone starts updating. I know not a common problem but it actually costs us money in overruns on our cap. There really should be an option to turn off automatic downloading of the update.

Turn off wifi or put it in airplane mode before charging it maybe???? Dunno.....

Too little, too late. That feature was needed for iOS 7.0 now its all over.

Not necessarily. Many of us will stay on a JB'able 7.x version. For us, this will be useful too. Assuming the last JB'able version will have the feature.

Another fix

You could do what I did to prevent the next ios install file from being automatically downloaded. Fill up your iphone so there is no room to download the update file. Then be sad that there is no more room to install Robot Unicorn Attack 2.

Or be sad that the phone is actually performing at least somewhat worse than when it actually has usable space.

It's certainly not a solution, and is barely a workaround, if one at all really.

...and no Robot Unicorn Attack. That was the most important part :)

Nah, I was just being facetious. I did not fill up my phone on purpose, or at least on purpose to stop auto-downloading of update files
