And I don't agree with that. No update file should be downloaded to a users device without them approving it. It appears this is fixing that.

Wait, so you are saying you don't agree with what?

The issue on hand is that we were forced to download the update files and have no way to recover the used space unless we install it (which, no bloody way I would do that).

This is still not fixed on devices running iOS 6 with the iOS 7 update files clogging up the storage space.

this is pretty cool and a space saver

only on macrumors is the possibility to delete a forced unwanted download called pretty cool.

it was intrusion and disrespect of the worst kind considering what apple charges for each gig on their devices

I was super psyched when i saw this only to realize once i got to the comments that in order for this to work, you would have to indeed update to 7.1!:apple:

Only apple.

It would be gold if they released an ios 6.1.4 for this feature. Bets on likelihood?

Wait, now that i think about it, this would mean that its a ios 7 beta 2 fix, not beta 3; given that beta 3 hasnt been installed yet, rightttt...

why would anyone on a iPhone 5 (or above) or a iPad 4 (or above) not upgrade to iOS 7??? that would be crazy.
They don't like it for one reason or another? It's kind of crazy to think that everyone should like the same things that everyone else, right?

People buy their phone knowing what the current software does. Far as I'm concerned if they don't wish to upgrade for whatever reason, they shouldn't have to upgrade...
If you want to interact with the outside world (web browsing, email, other cloud services) and the outside world is changing (security updates, new apps with new APIs for a cloud service), you have to accept change (if the webmail interface of your provider changes, you have to adapt). You buy a house and then your fire insurance demands smoke detectors, you have to install them or loose the insurance.

I can ensure you, if you do not connect your device to the internet, you will not be forced to install updates.

You can still use iOS 6 just fine, and if something doesn't work there, then it's up to you to decide to upgrade for what you might need. If you don't need to upgrade for what you are using, then there might not be a point for you to do it, despite the rest of the world moving ahead or whatnot.

Turn off wifi or put it in airplane mode before charging it maybe???? Dunno.....
My thoughts exactly. If there is a will, there is a way.

I'm afraid, iOS and the iPhone aren't à-la-carte products. Try to not upgrade one app but all others, while possible, it is such a pain that almost nobody did this. That's the point, you cannot always pick the elements you want.

That would have been great news in 2012 when my 3GS auto-updated from iOS5 to iOS6, taking up half of my 8GB with no way to remove it.

Now I'm forced to live with iOS6 which halves operational speed, compared to snappy iOS5.

Except I -and many others- were unaware that this would happen with wifi downloads enabled.

Well good that you can delete the download... but wont apple automatically try to push it again the next day?

iOS 7 has been a headache for me.

My elderly parent installed iOS 7, then forgot password. They could not restore because the needed iTunes was no longer supported on their old computer.

On my wife's iPhone 4, performance when downhill.

And it is taking up 3GB of space on my iPhone and iPad.

iOS is a great system, but just not for older hardware.

Usually you can pick and choose which apps to update or not to update (and if they don't support the OS you are on they will actually not even show up with an update being available generally speaking).

This is much like implementing something that shouldn't be thee in the first place.

Its your phone, why should Apple download install files if the users decided for their own reason NOT to upgrade.

My solution? Just don't download them . :)

Having install files on the phone and giving user the choice to only then remove them from the device just seems wrong...

There already on the device, Apple can do whatever it wants..

What happens when you flip the switch but installation automatically starts in few days,,, you have no control ?

At least if you don't want to upgrade, and don't want the extra space cluttering up your phone, you can always just disable wi-fi if they remain on server.

it is possible they could release a 6.1.5 update with bug fixes and this kind of basic maintenance

doesn't mean they will, but they could. Apple's supported multiple code branches at once before like before the ipad was merged

Good Lord...these I want iOS 6 back crowd is really starting to get annoying. If you want to stay on iOS 6 you could have. It wasn't forced on anyone.

You have install smoke detector because it is written in the law and it is for your and your community's safety. Force downloading updates or force update software it is not.

This has nothing to do with changing world or anything, it is all because Apple is a control freak.

Then don't update or at least look into some of the testing results before you do.

That is the way software works for all systems. Try running a Windows 8 on something that was originally running xp. Same slow performance issues.

Can't really say much about forget pass codes, except don't set them and you can always restore from another PC. But maybe the iPhone is not the best phone or at least they didn't need the update.

Enough already

Stop with the "everyone should stop complaining and use iOS7" comments already. It's not always about the new interface or the new icons.

My brother has an iPhone 4 and iOS7 has rendered his iPhone almost unusable. It was running fine with iOS6.

He's now thinking about switching to Android since Apple doesn't care about supporting older devices and even going to extreme like making them useless to force people to upgrade to new versions.

Is that really what you people want? People so pissed at Apple that they will switch to something else instead?

edit: and please don't reply with "don't update" or "read about it" or something similar. If Apple sends an update that basically kills your device WITH NO OPTION OF REVERTING to the previous version, it's a broken QA test and a broken design on Apple's part. One does not expect the maker of a device to render it useless. And if they do, then they just lost a customer.
