The best record doesn't always mean the best team but the best schedule.

Take out Beckett, Manny and Ortiz and what do you have? Just a normal team.

Take out Jeter, arod, Posada, Wang/Pettitte.... we have a meh team.

The point here is that we both hate each other's teams, but that doesn't stop some of us from respecting the other teams.

I hate the Red Sox, but I do respect them for what they can do.

That is fine, as do I the Yankees. Under Torre they had a great run. I can't think of another sports team with anything like that 12 playoffs and 4 championships in 12 years. Other teams won that many championships, but were only hot for that time frame (70's Steelers for example). I think the Yankees are going to have a hard time next year, regardless of payroll.

But some on this board can't seem to admit defeat (at least for this year).

I can never respect them after the Pedro incident in 03.

oh please. Even Don Zimmer admitted it was his fault. What do you want Pedro to do, just stand there and take a shot when Zimmer charged him?

You can throw in the Patriots, I don't see anybody stopping them from winning it all this year. Brady isn't human, it's official.

Yes, the Yankees had an outstanding run. The most impressive part being from '96-'01. We built those teams (96-01) from our farm and non-star studded FAs (for the most part) The Yanks tossed all that out the window after '01 and went on a spending spree and now it's going to cost them. I don't think next year will be horrific, but I don't see us making the playoffs. We'll see what happens.

EDIT: When throwing out generalizations about Yankee fans (I don't mean you, I mean to any Sox fan in general), remember there are some whom aren't arrogant bastards :D

Ugh. :(

Boston is a great team in terms of skill, but they are a Yankees clone when you realize how much of a high-dollar overdog they are.

Lets hope this loss was a fluke.

Im with you. I hate it when people generalize about any fans, be it yankees, redsox, whatever. Im a big time redsox fan, I have friends who are huge yankees fans. What team you like doesn't reflect on who you are, there are Yankees fans who are jerks, Redsox fans who are jerks, there's proably a pretty equal jerk distributiton amongst all teams.

oh yeah!

And Gagne did not suck, which is good. Now lets hammer the rookie tomorrow and head to the mountains up 2-0!

Yeah, but it didn't suck with a 12 run lead, I'm still not ready to see him in in the 8th with a 2 run lead. We'll see how game 2 goes, my bet is we will have a little more work than game 1. Let's go Sox.

Well, so much for the week+ off the Rockies had. They played poorly this evening and the Sox played liked pros. Hopefully the Rockies can get it together and make this series more interesting. I was ready to stop watching around the 3rd inning. Oh well, on to game two.

TDD, you're right about the importance of a good farm system. It is the reason the Sox have some great talent like Ellsbury, Pedroia and Youkilis. I frequently go to Pawtucket to check out the new talent (waaaaaay cheaper than Fenway) and believe the Sox will be contenders for the next decade. I hope the Yankees get back to this philosophy because it is much more fun to face them in the playoffs. Nothing beats the tension of a Sox-Yankees ALCS match. In '03 and '04, I enjoyed the playoffs more than the world series.

Having $143 to spend on your roster sure makes finding only a couple of decent prospects to plug holes a lot easier.

Try doing it with $54 million and see how great those prospects look.

I would not say the Red Sox are the best team they just got hot at the right time. All they have is Beckett really.

Oh please.Spare me  That statement ranks right up there with "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" Nothing like a bitter Yankee's fan that still can't accept the fact the Yankee's took the pipe, yet again, and are golfing now.

You and all the other Red Sox haters on this board can hate the Sox all you want. And continue droning on and on and whining at nauseum. This team was down 3-1 and looked like dead men walking after game four. They pitched and hit their asses off for three straight wins. Including shelling Cleveland’s two aces in all their starts in that series. They picked up right where they left off last night.
In regard to Beckett,he's having one of the best post season pitching runs I can remember. And to think after his first year here, people were questioning the trade.Hats off to John Farrell for getting his head on straight..
And since when does what a team spends have anything to do with how they draft and build their farm system?

Yeah, that was a whole lot of ugly by the Rockies. Fortunately it is a 7 game series so they just need to shake it off and they clearly still have a chance.

PawSox ftw. I used to live less than a mile from McCoy (now it's about 5 miles)

The Sox have built a lot of their team through the farm system.

Youkilis, Pedroia, Papelbon, Lester, Delcarmen all starters this year

Upcoming prospects:
2008: Ellsbury (CF), Buchholz (SP), Brandon Moss (OF, if we trade Crisp, he might be the 4th OF on the roster)
2009: Jed Lowrie (SS), Justin Masterson (SP), Michael Bowden (SP)

Sox farm system is stacked. Thanks to Theo on that one..Duquette didn't do that much with it and when he left, there wasn't much there.
I caught quite a few games at Lowell this past season. Even at that level, there's some good talent...

Everyone one of the Fox Pre-Game Announcers picked the Sox in either 6 or 7 games. Let's see if that happens. If we win tonight, I think we'll take it in 5 and win it in Colorado.
For sure, it's unknowable at this point, but I'd tend to agree with this. I see tonight's as an absolute must for Colorado, not only for record's sake, but for their whole morale after last night's spanking. Going home down 0-2 would be tough to come back, tough to run three in a row, and tough to HAVE to win it, away again in Boston.

Huge game tonight for sure. It would be tough for a young team to be down by 2 heading back home. Depending on how long the series goes, this may also be Schilling's last start as a Red Sox pitcher...
