This is going to be as big of a surprise as, uh, the , uh, iPhone 5.

Man I miss when everything was so secret that rumors were flying around this place, speculation, fake pics, fake parts, and then BAM! NEW AWSOME phone!

When the iPhone 4 was announced it was just an amazing time! (Although somewhat ruined by the "found at the bar" incident). Great stuff. I couldn't wait to get that phone!

Or even the new HTC One Mini:

A 4.3 inch all metal body with a band of plastic around the edge in a form factor just slightly larger than the iPhone 5.

Let´s hope Apple still has some surprises left after all these leaks, or else this is going to be an extremely boring event. I had high expectations, because I need a new phone. Looks like all the things we get are some mildly updated hardware with iOS 7.

Sadly I really need a new phone, else I would wait for the iPhone 6.

Get an iPhone 5 on eBay and wait for the iPhone 6. I just got an iPhone 5 in like new condition for $330. Now I can upgrade my 4s without losing my upgrade.

8 and especially 16 are do-able and also adequate for those that mostly use low storage info type apps. The Galaxy S 4 has 16 so that will probably be the benchmark. Apple has no reason to not continue to keep storage one of the feature differentiators between the less expensive models and the flagship as storage isn't a big buying factor for most, judging by sales (the 4 and 4S beat the 5). Remember the 5C would be an entry level model. As usual with Apple products an extra $100 gets double the storage if that is important to the buyer.

Slightly off topic… have you some connection to Portugal? You're nick / avatar make me remember "os antigos chupas, dos tempos de miúdo"!

If so... "Maiores cumprimentos".

They'll almost certainly keep the 8GB model so they can price it "from xxx" to keep that figure as low as possible.

My guess iPhone 5C will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions with the iPhone 5S in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB versions.

Disagree. They won't do a 32gb 5C. You want that much you get the 5s

Consider that the pricing, on contract, starts at $199 for the 'flagship' model. And goes up $100 each storage step

That would make it
8GB 5C = $0/0.99
16GB 5C = $99
32GB 5C = $199
32GB 5S = $199

Also it's unlikely they would do a 128GB iPhone. At least for the moment. Maybe with the iPhone 6

Honestly, I think the new 5C looks nice. The color variety adds some life into the nice but muted black and white versions of the 5. If it's a basically the 5 redone, with a lower price point, they may be able to boost the market share reasonably well while still retaining some profits. Will it canibalize 5S purchases? Yes, but it can also pull from android and becomes a nicer phone option for people who have been looking at the 4/4S phones due to price. I'd expect that the release of the 5C and reasonably strong sales should boost the stock price by a good amount since market share has become increasingly important to shareholders. Profit and Margins are there, but the questions often surround the market share and sustainability of the sales. The 5C opens up international markets and probably the broader US market again.

Maybe they are going to market the iPhone 5C as grab-n-go impulse purchases? These would be sold unlocked at a lower price than the iPhone 5S and would be at virtually any electronics retailer. Need a phone? Just grab one of these and pop in a sim card?

Seems like so many people end up damaging or losing their phones, and there isn't really an easy place to buy replacements unless you want to go through the paperwork with your carrier.

Kind of my thinking too. Just based on the packaging

No real mystery here. It's the iPhone 5 in a plastic case and rebranded the iPhone 5C so it's "new". The real mystery will be price.

My off-contract pricing guess is

5C 16GB - $399
5C 32GB - $499
no 64 or 128

If you think it's gonna be any less you are crazy. Remember, the iPod Touch is $299 and the iPad mini is $329. There's no way the 5C with all of it's radios and retina screen is coming in any cheaper than those. There will be no more iPhone 5. It gone as of the announcement IMHO.

On contract - probably $99 (16), $149 (32). Since the $199 (32), $299 (64), $399 (128) will be reserved for the iPhone 5S.

I'm curious why you think 32GB is absolutely unacceptable? I mean, that's how many feel about the 16GB.

I think 32 is fine for lots of people. I just meant that I *personally* will not buy another 32 gb phone.

Not 100% that the white doesn't have a white face. In that pic, that is just the sticker/carboard that is over top of it in the shell.

The sticker matches the phone (the background on the sticker matches the phone's back shell). Besides, I think you'd see some white peeking through at the bezel around the sticker if they had a white screen. I understand not having a white screen on a lower cost item. "Upgrade if you want a white screen." That said, the only all white iPhone was the 4 (3G had black face, 5 has metal back). I was hoping this would be it. Really liked all white in the mock-ups.

This makes no sense. Those price points are too close. Who would pay $149 for the 32 gb 5C and not pony up $199 for the 5S?

My guess:

There is no way they will offer an 8 gb model 5C. You can hardly even take photos and have a couple of apps and albums with that, never mind video. Forget it.

I think this is more likely:

5C 16/32 $0/100
5S 32/64/128 $200/300/400

$100 is a more reasonable difference between the 32 gb models. I would love to see a $200 64 gb 5C, but I have my doubts.

I have a feeling that apple is trying to make the 5C as unattractive as possible relative to the 5S, so that the only people who will purchase this are those who want an iPhone but cant afford the high-end model.

iPod Touch is $299 - iPad mini is $329. My guess is that the carriers already get so much from you on contract that they are willing to price the 5C 32 and 5S 32 pretty close together. I do agree in general about the $100 price difference though which is why I think the off-contract ones Apple will sell will be priced that way. All guesses of course.

First, Apple introduces us to the more affordable 5C. Then, the 5S. Finally (in my dreams), Apple introduces us to the new flagship model, the iPhone 6 with larger screen. The media present at the announcement go nuts. Tim Cook smiles, knowing everyone was caught off guard by the announcement. AAPL begins its climb to go knocking on Google stock's door, pre-orders go through the roof, it becomes the must have item of the season, some iPhone 5 owners cry that they can't upgrade until next year, other iPhone 5 owners say to hell with it and pre-order. Like a lot of other people ready to upgrade, I'm happy.

I'm curious why you think 32GB is absolutely unacceptable? I mean, that's how many feel about the 16GB.

32 GB was already available back in 2009...
4 years later it sounds extremely small, especially for heavy user / pros

5S = Same old stuff. "Faster, Lighter, Better Camera" crap Apple have used since the iPhone 4.

The 5C seems to atleast be different from previous iPhone models rather than the the same product as always with some slight tweaks.

+ Apple's motto does seem to be "when out of ideas, release multiple colours"

I think AppleCare+ with the cheap replacement ends up filling that niche though. Certainly that's what it seems like at the Genius Bar.

I guess we will have to see. The packaging suggest it will be on display in its box. I haven't seen that before with the iPhone (mind you I don't go looking very often!!!!)
