Sorry, but it looks cheap and fugly. Not even the Chinese will like that, they are much more sophisticated now...

I hate cases. Unprotected is far better!
Ya, nothing better than a phone so small that you can't hold on to it and that chips at the slightest touch. Who want's to keep the phone longer when you can break it in 2 hours.

Maybe if Apple made a durable phone there would be no need for a case.

Not even an iPod Nano is packed that cheap. I can't believe a several hundred euros expensive phone will get such a crap package.

I may be the only one that loves the look of the 5C over the champagne/Goochi iPhone 5S.

The price is what I need now. I have my fingers crossed for a $299 price for an 8GB/16GB model . . . . unsubsidized of course.

meh. i agree with whoever said they should not make the cheap available in the 1st world countries. go after emerging markets that are not buying apple. keep it premium, apple. you products have the most resale value out of any tech ive seen. i would not be able to sell a banged up 6 year old hp laptop for over $200, but i did sell a banged up macbook pro. its an image problem.

by the by, its not the plastic thats the prob, its the easter egg pastel colors. the combined with the candyland ios = ****.

Why not?

It's not like most people would take any notice of the packaging, and lower costs mean more profit for Apple. Rational purchasers will buy a phone based on their needs, and the mindlessly rabid fanboy group would buy it if it came encrusted in a turd, so it makes perfect sense to package it as cheaply as it can get away with.

That said, I quite like the clean packaging look. Yes, it does have a hint of disposable computing about it, in the same way as cheap headphones or iPod nano's are packaged in the same way, but it's not a bad design per se.

Disclaimer: I'm not in the market for a buying a new handset, I'm very content with the one I own.

I thought plastic was for cheap phones only

This IS their cheap phone.

That goes for all smart phone manufacturers.

One thing I don't understand is when companies makes phones with different colours but leave the front portion black. Sony has done it with their Xperia line too, back being a gorgeous white and the front top and bottom black. Spoils the look IMHO…..

Though not entirely surprising, I'm a little bummed that they all have black faces, even the white one.

I'm not claiming to be an expert on this, but I believe that the black face plates could be a cost-saving measure. To have a white face plate that does not yellow/get grungy over time, a more expensive grade of polymer would be required, adding to the cost of the phone. It may not seem like much overall, but keep in mind that every dime reduced at manufacturing level is at least a dollar at retail level, if not more.

Alternatively, the black face plates could be for cosmetic purposes, such as a defined contrast.

There is no "background color" in iOS, there's a background photo that the user selects personally.
And if the background photo shows just one color, it is a background color.
Because iPhones never let you change the background when?
You can change the background on the Surface as well. Doesn't matter. Still comes ugly out of the box.
If I would like to tweak my system till it looks barely acceptable, I would have stayed with Windows.

Apple believes (and I agree) that customers pay them to make decisions for them. Thats okay as long as these decisions are generally very good and tasteful. But if they suddenly loose their taste and start to make very weird design decisions, we have a problem.

At least give me the possibility to change system icons in iOS and I will stop complaining about them. But they don't want that (and I agree), because it would increase complexity and would make the preferences pane harder to use. So they have to always make it right the first time and iOS 7 just isn't.

I may have to, which would be a shame because I just started using an iPhone a few months ago. I really like the professional look of most of iOS 6. Some of the skeumorphism had to go, but iOS 7 took that way too far, and the color scheme of the icons reminds me if Windows XP.

If you don't like the look of the icons, hide them. iOS 7 is far more than it's icons. The multitasking, control center, and cleaner and simpler look are all much needed and much welcomed improvements.

I'd pay nothing more than $400 for this cheap crap!!! Lets see what price range they're asking. I figure $599 starting price considering iPod Touch top end is $399!

Hate the 5C but glad :apple: has come down to earth by offering cheap looking **** like everyone else :D

299 is a bit low since that would definitely eat away at the iPod Touch sales. Unless they're lowering the price on those (entirely possible), I don't see how 299 would work for the iPhone 5c.

Steve hates it when people assume they know what he would or would not have liked. The 5s will include far more improvements over the 5 than the 3gs had over the 3g.

sorry, forgot the i /i :D

This and also, to be white means to reflect light of all wave lengths. You can't reflect light, if you are a sensor that absorbs light. So front-facing camera, proximity sensor and fingerprint sensor can never be made all white, but they can be made all black and therefore nearly invisible on a black face plate. This is physics and Apple has to come back and adjust to it, even after experimenting with white for a while.

I would agree with this, but the leaked iPhone 5S screenshots show that that use white faceplates for the new gold iPhone. Since this is a more budget iPhone, I wouldn't expect any more functionality than a current iPhone 5. But, hey I hope you are right :D
