Do we really need any innovation with the iPhone.
I have the iPhone 5 and have had every model since inception.
I also have tried the Galaxy s4 for a week.
Looking back there sometimes is a product that is so perfect that there is no
need to tinker with its design.
I feel the pinnacle of design in smart phones was the iPhone 4.
The feel, style and design have yet to be matched. Sure there are phones with bigger screens etc. I would be happy if Apple kept the 4 design and just kept updating the insides. There comes a point where a product is just right.
I like my 5 but overall the design of the 4 IMO was the end all. Truly a piece of Art. I would be willing to bet if Apple brought back the 4 design and updated the internals and also had several other models including new cheap plastic models, bigger screen models etc, the 4 design model would out sell them all!
Sometimes when you get it right it doesn't need to be messed with!

Agree . The iphone 4 was the most radical design at that time and was well ahead of its competitors. The metal and glass design still looks very premium (more than the iphone 5) and is probably still one of the best looking phones release. The iphone 4 release also coincided with the retina display and facetime .. features that were ahead of their competitors by nearly a year.

The 4S had only siri to tout as a new feature and the 5 didnt have anything new. However , the fingerprint sensor if integrated into the iphone 5c will be a new feature (if integrated nicely into the system in typical apple "seamless"fashion)

does apple even need to have its event on 10th of september? all they need to do is post links on its website to various sites that have all these videos and pictures.

Where are all the "I hate plastic" / "Apple would never go plastic!" / "it looks like a toy!" folks now?

(Yes, there's an option to buy the higher quality one, but there are also higher quality Android OEMs options as well).

Have you read any of the comments???

I'm neither low income nor did I ever buy a Samsung-phone (well reality is that I'm still useing a cheap "feature-phone").

Problem is, the base iPhone 5 is 679Euro, no way in hell I would ever spend such money on whats little more than a toy (since the phone-part can be had near free these days).

The 4 is still a frigging 399Euro, not really thrilled at spending that much on 2 year old tech.

If they manage to atleast hold that price for the 5C it might be the 1st iPhone I'd seriously consider buying.
If not I might actually end up buying a Samsung afterall.

I suppose it also matters where you live. In the UK, handsets are heavily subsidised, so price is not a real difference.

New Safari icon tweaks!!!? OMG YESSSSS!!!!!111!!1!!!!!1!!!!

Please do not mock the new Safari icon.

An entire committee of designers at Apple spent literally months working on it, staying up late into the night and debating it's finer points over and over. Every single pixel has been tuned to perfection. Screen-shots and spy photos do not do it justice. Everyone will agree that it's a design masterpiece, once they see it in the flesh.

Ya... first of all its a polycarbonate hardened plastic like the Lumia not the thin cheap plastic on the Samsung S4. The iPhone case is closer to the Lumia polycarbonate shell with continuous color all the way through. The s4 is painted over plastic. So plastic or not I guarantee it will be much more durable than a thin S4.

Its not the plastic... Its the cheapness and thinness that samsung uses that bugs me. If it were polycarbonate like the lumia series I would not have a issue. Lumias can take a beating

The 4S had only siri to tout as a new feature and the 5 didnt have anything new....

The 4S also had a substantially improved camera and much better CPU/GPU than the 4. These are probably bigger factors for most people in the 4S update than Siri or anything else.

This, combined with rumors that the 5S may not be that much faster than the 5 makes me wonder what will be the compelling features this time around.

When did Apple *ever* package a product with a lame 'photo of the interface' stuck to the front? I don't believe these are genuine.

Like the previous responses, of course the answer is the iPod Touch.

But more interesting for me is, the iPod Touch doesn't have the oleophobic coating on the screen like the iPhone does. The clear plastic sticker on a new iPhone is different than the Touch's picture-sticker, so I have to wonder, will the 5C not have the screen coating?

The 4S had only siri to tout as a new feature and the 5 didnt have anything new.

Well, LTE and a bigger screen were sort of new.

It's almost as if...

In their desire to preserve the prestige of their premium phones imagine if Apple did something CUH-RAZY like making their budget line so eye-searingly ugly that it would be obvious to everyone who the haves and have-nots are… oh wait.

*Knock* *Knock*

Mr. Cook, Sir Jony? The 80's are at the door demanding their color palette back.

So will these come packaged with matching rubber bracelets and headbands?

I don't understand the purpose of multiple color backs. I think its safe to assume a majority of people put their devices into cases.

Thats true. I have never understood why Apple bothers to create a beautiful aluminium unibody phone when then people put on top a Star Wars case.

----------

i love the idea that a $400-500 phone is for low income.

$0 with a contract

Where would it normally say what the size of the device is as far as memory? So many boxes in the picture but yet to see one that states if this is a 16 or 32GB phone? Or maybe it's going to be one size only?

If Apple goes two sizes 16 and 32? With a 399 and 299 off contract price. 99 dollars and 99 cent with contract......they got themselves a monster.

But at those prices......they better make the 5S something truly worth spending extra money on. I can see a lot of people saying "I don't need the faster processor for the extra 200/300 bucks"

in facts, it will costs much more (Apple way :D ). don't forget ipod touch prices

People will love the colors and the price soon after the announcement.
Going through any criticism now makes no real sense. It will get entertaining in a few weeks from now.

To be fair they had to make these look horrible, otherwise they would have too big an impact on the sales of the 5S.

I wonder how easy/cheap it will be to get a replacement back panel. At least replacing the horrific wallpaper is free.

I've been using the betas, and every single background I use the text is still white.

Switch to a very light background and it'll change.

Example.

Look great for a lower cost phone

These look great for the lower cost version. The 5S will look really classy compared to these. The price of the 5S will be tantalisingly close to convince people to step up to the classier looking one with the extra features.

I'm sure there will also be quite a few people that will bite so others can see they have the deluxe model.
