Apple: That ain't cool.
Palm: Haha!
Apple: Give us money or we'll block you.
Palm: You can't block us.
Apple: May I show you iTunes 8.2.1 beta. *Ta-da!*
Palm: Who do we make the check out to?

The question is, does Palm get the better deal by selling more units due to iTunes connectivity (as opposed to any of the other stores they could have tried instead), or does Apple get the better deal by selling more songs through iTunes?

Palm is really acting quite desperate here by hacking itself to work with iTunes. Shameful. Wait! This is really good publicity for Palm! I'll stick to my iPhone. If I had to switch, I would take the Blackberry or maybe Android.

I think it is in the best interest for apple customers for the pre to be able to sync music through iTunes. If we own a mac and use iTunes, why would we want another application to sync music.

iTunes is integrated in the iLife multiverse, applications can tap into the photo/film/music library and show al the data and user created albums inline. The Pre synching up with iTunes is the easy solution, if this doesn't work Palm needs to make an app that integrates with iLife to do the exact same thing.

If Apple would block synching with the Pre i would not be surprised that the Pre looses Mac support.

AMEN. Thank you.

Seriously it sickens me how blind and robotic some of these fanboys are. I LOVE Apple myself but even I don't see a point in making iTunes "iPod/iPhone only". It reeks of elitism - Like they think to themselves, "Ha! You bought an MP3 player that isn't Apple? **** YOU!"

That's so immature and selfish.

I myself am very happy to have iPhone for the forseeable future but my hubby is a Nokia fan & other members of my family have various makes & models. I would love to be able to sync them with itunes. Its so easy & straightfoward to use.

Why doesnt Apple allow it???
& where is the list of mobiles that ARE currently allowed?

for a product that is hyped as THE iPhone killer, it sure does leaves its fate at Apples mercy.

Wow. That's a totally different image than I got. I think Palm hired the brightest, not the dumbest and most bitter.

Do you really think all the people that Apple hired away from other companies, also came to Apple only because they were terrible at their old jobs? If so, why would Apple hire them? Ditto for Palm.

I think it's more likely that these are very creative people, who wanted to work somewhere that their ideas could come to life, without a boss hampering them. That's why I've changed jobs before.

Sorry but disagree . From what I've read working for apple is like working for Gordon ramsey. They are very very very demanding on their people . All that matters is the customer experience, the employees function is to please the customer and to do Sj or the managers will. There is no cosy warm motherhood stuff about keeping employees happy. It is as far from google as you could think. Certainly no turning up when you want to . But people love working there as only the best survive. They produce world changing products. Their career goal is certainly not to one day ' graduate' to a failing company like Palm!

I wouldn't touch the pre with a barge poll as it is coming from a desperate company acting like they are taking their last gamble and putting their new product at risk from a hated competitor who could turn a major feature off.

No they are staffed by apples cast off's and I know this sounds insesitive.

After reading this thread my view remains unchanged. I believe I counted 4 decent posts, the rest.. well..

Heres the deal. To all of you out there claiming the Pre is 'infringing on the Apple {trademark, copyright, patents,ip,etc}'. Stop. The Pre is not claiming to be an iPod. It doesn't say anywhere on the device it is an iPod. Its not falsely sending image of the iPod saying, "Hey, this is me! An iPod!". It is however, during this 'media sync' sending a vendor id, which, is just a string. Nothing sophisticated. iTunes/OS X is however recognizing it as an iPod, treating it like one, and calling it. Hence the, 'syncing with ipod' line. Again, that is iTunes, not the Pre.

I have not seen anyone actually back up the claim that Apple spent 'millions' developing some magical, mystical syncing protocol that should be exclusive to them. And if they did? Well, they should have shot their lead developer for wasting company time and money.

iTunes isn't even that great of a media player. It's basic. Want cover art? You have to get an iTunes account! Not only that, but provide your personal information and credit card info! What a bunch of crap.

To those saying, 'no one said it was crap'. Try reading earlier threads, they did, and will continue to do so.

To those saying they aren't fanboys. Well maybe you aren't, but when you go out of your way to try and prove a point and say that a company (ex: Apple) is the best ***** on the planet, you sound like a fanboy, and likely are.

There really is just no winning here. People will constantly, without thought, bash anything 'threatening' to Apple, because, you know.. they need your protection!

Oh and to the person who said I said something about the UI: Try reading what I wrote. I didn't mention the UI. I didn't hint at the UI or in anyway shape or form bring it into the conversation. I did however, reply to someone mentioning the UI. Which, btw, Apple doesn't own the rights to "rounded buttons", "touch screens" (even multi touch ones!), "rounded phone design", "rounded phone with chrome trim design", "rounded phone with chrome trim and single button", et al. It's just a company people, and its just a phone, media player, [poor] music player, operating system; surely you must have better uses for your time than going balls out crazy on the internet.

working for pre now then?

How is this Pre/iTunes thing different from Mail.app/Exchange? A simple update by MicroSoft and Mac on enterprise is killed.

Thats the style Palm Fight for all free peoples against Naked Apple Aggression!

No NO No!

What am I saying!

Own them Stevie!

Own them All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beeches Come!!!!!!!!!!!!!:apple:

It seems a lot of people here would rather not have you use itunes as your phone is not an apple phone.

palm pre i crap, cant wait for the iphone 3 gen on monday!!:apple:
Saynwhat you will but for content apple wants users to buy apple tv or iTunes when they are free elsewhere.

Palm pre has flash which is 90% of web content. Palm ore will win for content. Meanwhile new iPhone will have novelty iMovie iPhone sharing. Big whoop. Palm has real gps. I think the ore has a long time before the iPhone launch. Ifvapple delays, you know they think they are in trouble.

Peace.

LOL, first off when you put the words in the string "Apple iPod" you are saying it's an iPod. That is the point of the string. If it's so legal why has no one else done it? I'll tell you why. Nobody wants to get in a lawsuit intentionally telling iTunes that they are an iPod.

Secondly, to make your arguments sound better you should know what you're talking about. You do not need a credit card for an iTunes account. If iTunes is not a good media player, then why is Palm desperately employing hacks so it can work with iTunes? Why does 70% of the people use iTunes? Sorry if after this I don't take your word that apple dosen't own the patent for multitouch on a capicitive display. The funny thing was I was thinking of buying a Pre a month ago. But every time I hear one of Palm's shenanigans, it turns me off. They are a classless company.

Your rant makes you sound irrational and crazy. You want to believe that somehow Palm is right. The problem with all of this is that the end user believes that whatever is beneficial to them is right, even though a company spent countless man hours and hundreds of millions (if not billions) developing a product. Contrary to what Microsoft may think, Apple is not the R&D for the technology industry. Palm can easily stop being jerkoffs and create a simple multiplatform sync app or use DoubleTwist.

I would like to see it also. But it has to be licensed and Apple has to be willing to license it. Apple makes very little money on actually selling music and movies. They make their money off the hardware. The reason there is a higher price on Apple Products (besides quality) is that they put research and development into stuff like iTunes which are simple and easy products for the end user.

If you're looking for an application that will sync music, photos, and videos with your husbands' Nokia (and many other phones), try out DoubleTwist. It's simple and free.

Whoah! You absolutely sure about that? It did ask for mine and I couldn't sign up until I entered one... :p

As of the use of iTunes - all of us that use a mac have such a plethora of music players to choose from it's insane, don't we? :D

The only other one worth a note was Audion and it got killed off due to iTunes increasing popularity. As I remember it, they (Panic software company) wrote that on their products homepage. They also gave out a free license for those who'd want to continue using it.

Hi,

I don't know about the other phones but your hubby might be able to use iTunes on his Nokia as well as sync calendar, etc. The way to do it is:

To sync contacts, calendar, etc

http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/product-support/isync

To sync from iTunes

http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/nokia-multimedia-transfer#

I'm 100% sure. Look again. There is an option without a credit card. It has been there for a while now. I have two accounts. One with a credit card and one without.

Apple would be wrong to block the Pre from syncing. It would be bad PR. It would almost look like anti competitive. In the end it is bad for the consumer to have crap so restrictive as itunes sync.

We applaud openness and free choice but we accept anything that the likes of apple or Google give us. Pretty lame if you ask me.

no it's shameful of Apple to even consider it..

OK, if you say so. It was quite while since I signed up (and I did it within iTunes itself) so I guess that must have changed then.

LOL, first off when you put the words in the string "Apple iPod" you are saying it's an iPod. That is the point of the string.

The thing is though that the Pre doesn't put the words "Apple iPod" in a string anywhere - it's the operating system / iTunes that identifies the pre as an iPod based on the vendor / device ID which is just a couple of hex numbers. Semantics maybe but an important difference because Apple don't have copyright over the vendor / device ID (vendor / device IDs are public because otherwise no-one would be able to integrate with any USB device).

for a product that is hyped as THE iPhone killer, it sure does leaves its fate at Apples mercy.

I wouldn't say their fate rests in Apple's hands. Remember, the Pre's a smartphone, not an iPod. It's certainly not going to be the end of the world if Pre owners can't sync their mp3s to iTunes. Really, come on. I look at the syncing with iTunes as a little added bonus, but it certainly isn't a necessity. And besides, there are other programs that sync mp3s.

I won't get the Pre because it is a CDMA phone (for now) and I'm still quite happy with my 1st gen iPhone (we'll see how long my self-control and happiness will last after a new phone announcement by Monday:D).

Why so much animosity? We would still get to sync our iPhones regardless of Pre's ability to sync with iTunes or not. As a consumer, with no vested interest on any company, I wan't every phone maker in the world to fight for my money.

Relax. Enjoy your iPhone and let others enjoy whatever phones they want to have. May the best phone win.

Apple already provided a free and excellent syncing software in OS X. I have my Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones syncing with my Mac beautifully. It's called iSync. Even better, I can sync via bluetooth. Why can't Palm just develop a plug-in for iSync? The only advantage of syncing with iTunes is syncing music/videos. It's cheap of Palm to use "syncing" as an excuse to piggy back the popularity of iTunes, and the fact that iTMS is now DRM free. There are plenty of alternatives. Here's an idea for Palm, how about develop a plug-in for iSync, and partner up with Songbird or something for media syncing.

The problem is there are already too many Apple haters that if Apple did something, intentionally or not, that breaks the Pre's iPod syncing, there will be a negative vibe against Apple. On the other hand, maybe other companies like Sony can learn from what Palm is doing to provide iTunes' compatibility of their Walkmen... :D

I totally agree with this post. Very level-headed. I don't know why, as consumers, we should care about this. Is the Pre's ability to sync with iTunes affecting your iPhone experience? Exactly how would the Pre negatively affect your iPhone experience if its sales took off?
