The SDK is has been released to select developers including Pandora, Google, DataViz, Amazon, and the company making the emulator. They accept more developers every day. Just like the iPhone SDK it is a slow roll out.

AFAIK the "select" developers is very few and far between. Mainly those with long established palm relationships, which is why I suspect API's are an issue.

The devs I know who would be most interested in small specialty apps haven't been given the SDK yet, and not even documentation, even though they have track records on other mobile platforms.

Did you freak about the iPhone when their SDK wasn't available for a year?

well if most of the rumors are true. video recording compass , FM , faster processor, better camera, faster internet, better camera, auto focus , plus all awesome stuff with 3.0 copy, paste, push, and TONS more... i think this iphone will have everyohne forget the pre..plus the appstore.. their is not even an sdk yet for the pre. while apple is making it possible for you in 3.0 to check your freaking blood pressure and send it to your doctor.... i mean come on.. iphone kILLS

Did no one else find the last part of this hillarious?!? I read three pages of comments and no one picked up on it :)

iPhone sends (hopefully correct) blood pressure data to doctor. Doctor prescribes medicine based on said data. If data is wrong, medicine is wrong => patient dies. Ergo.... iPhone KILLS!

hmm so the battle (for me) will be be between iPhone for and the Palm Pre 2. I'm more than happy to be fought over. :D

See how you feel after WWDC when all the hype returns to the iPhone. Also, if you buy a Palm Pre, you'd soon starve for nice, juicy, awesome, multi-touch, App Store apps.

I already have an iPhone. If I got the Pre I'd keep the iPhone and use it as an iPod. We already know basically all that will (probably) be in the next iPhone. None of it has me going crazy for a new iPhone. The Pre will be cool and something that not everyone has. I hope they integrate it with MobileMe... If not I'll have to transfer my thousands of iCal entries to Gmail***.

***Does anyone know how to do that?

When I seen the Pre was coming out I clicked on the link to learn more. The splash screen talks about Sprint having the first nationwide 4G network. However, looking at the specs for the Pre it only has 3G service. Go figure by the phone now, but be left out of the 4G party later. Good job Sprint, one reason why I will not be switching.

Just need to check the data. Will be interesting to see where Core Chart/Plot gets at WWDC.

Some people never mail in the rebate to claim their money back. This way they can say they sell it for less, but often pocket the difference. Kind of smart.

I was wondering about that. How much do you really think they make off people that never send in the rebates? Anyone have stats or info on that? It really is just an annoying rip off game!

I am not getting a Pre but I do have to admit that it is the ONLY phone since the iPhone that I think looks cool and nicely designed GUI wise etc. Probably cause former Apple people worked on it! :D But I'll give it to Palm, it looks nice, so never call me a fanboy. :p

I don't think it will come near the success of the iPhone though and I do prefer a bigger screen and no keyboard with the iPhone. It could very well save Palm though!

Did you freak about the iPhone when their SDK wasn't available for a year?

No, but I actually want the Pre to succeed and I'm afraid to say that without the SDK, the Pre is in a really bad position at release. Right now the iPhone has the best package that fits my needs. This doesn't mean that in a year or two that someone else will not come out with a better package that will fit be better. I also have nostalgia for Palm, since I still own and love my PalmPilot 5000, Palm V, tungsten etc.

From Palm's financials, they will not exist next year unless the Pre is a success. Not having a SDK out now and demoed working 3rd party software makes me worry that a lot of the *good* software won't be released until late summer or fall, not to mention the small shop 3rd party apps.

My worry about the SDK is because as Apple learned that it is really hard to release a good SDK on a new OS (Google/Android is learning this too). Fortunately, Apple thought their SDK through, just like the OSX SDK. Thus, it is super easy to make a iPhone App. I only know Perl and can hack together simple iPHone apps without any problem.

If Palm releases a SDK late or a bad SDK, they will doom the platform itself. It is a tough balance, but they are entering a mature market on a very unpopular carrier. It is an uphill battle and lacking a SDK out in the wild makes the hill even steeper.

The Pre is a lot like the iphone in some ways.
It is overhyped.

I mean what is so amazing that it has a REPLACEABLE BATTERY?

OMG it has MULTITASKING!...

There have been a few phones that had multitasking, just not in a pretty way like the pre.

OMG it has copy and paste!...
Again there have been a few phones and OS' that have had copy and paste.

You keep on nagging the iphone for being overhyped but the pre is overhyped too, seriously. When the Storm or G1 or w/e came out how come they didn't hype the replaceable battery? I mean isn't that 1-upping the iphone? Pish Posh.

You answered your own question about the Pre and iPhone when you said " just not in a pretty way like the pre."

That fact is more powerful than you apparently realize. Why is the iPhone what it is today? Because of the user experience and user interface. The iPhone is the only phone that has ever TRUELY succeeded at that and now the Pre is looking like the only phone since the iPhone to accomplish that as well.

But people were giddy about the platform back then. It didn't seem empty and barron because there was no precedent. Now though, if Apple released an iPhone nano, for example, that didn't have an App Store, and only had the features of the first iPhone, it would get a lot more criticism than the first iPhone did.

I look at my phone now and wonder how I ever got through a year with the 1.0 software. Then I remember it was jailbroken almost the whole time. I haven't jailbroken for more than a few 24 hour periods since 2.0. And that was just out of boredom and curiosity.

I'm on my third Samsung Windows Mobile phone, and battery life has been fine. The current one (a 760) gets a charge each weekend, and maybe a quick charge midweek if I've been talking or surfing a lot. I don't even use the "extra capacity" battery - there's no reason to add 20g to the phone for extra battery life.

Two friends with 760s agree that the battery life is amazing.

Your Treo's battery life may suck, but don't blame it on Windows Mobile....

Multi-touch was shown 27 years ago, in 1982. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch)

Apple did not invent and patent multi-touch.

Though if the multi-touch was to be used the same way in the Pre then they could have a reason to sue, specially since most of the good stuff for multi-touch have either been patented or are already in the SDK API's (which I think are patented also?):D

Also many people (not all) don't realize the thing that makes the G1 and iPhone so special is because when you jailbreak, you open up a whole new world aside from the already greatness of the iphone. You get full access to all the files on your phone and you can tinker to your hearts content, and with jailbreaking there is always something new to try and it (for me) is just so fun going on the cydia and browsing through all the things.

Does the pre have a GBA emulator? No.

Does it have a NES emulator? No.

The whole classic emulation isn't really that big of a deal, since I just havn't really heard of that many Palm apps, or any for that matter besides solitaire or something.... Either way the Pre itself is as sandboxed and locked as the iPhone.

Alot of people make a big deal because you CAN (cue omg) make an appointment on your calendar and write an email at the same time! GASP! Oh for goodness sake already, just write the email and then make an appointment, simple as that. Your 'business' will not shut down if you use an extra 20 something seconds to write the email then go on your calendar which you could have probably done in your spare time.

Multitasking should be hyped with being able to play a game and being able to pause it, go to your texts, then go to the video recording app (or w/e) and record the video while you go back and play your game, all at the same time (looking from a more consuming view).

Not being able to (cue omg) write an email and go on your calendar at the same time! GASP!

I'd be hard-pressed to name 5 Apple App Store apps that I actually use.

1. Facebook
2. New York Times
3. ...uh...

Someone (may have been 9to5mac.com) had an interesting graphic posted that showed >90% of Apps aren't repeat use apps. Meaning there's a lot of interest in downloading Apple apps, just that the vast majority aren't found to be useful.

Did you freak about the iPhone when their SDK wasn't available for a year?

That was two years ago, when there was nothing close to the iPhone . Today is different, and no SDK is not good.

iPhone was then, and will be again, two years ahead of the competition.

Finally, the pre is competing more with crackberry than with the iPhone .

Looks exciting for new or renewing people, but a bummer for people already chained to another carrier.

At the top of my wish list for smart phones is the ability to use them on any carrier's network.

:apple:

1. Isn't Apple suing Palm over multitouch? Can't they stop Palm from releasing the Pre?

If Apple were to sue Palm, that'd be an epic failure. Are you aware of how many Palm patents Apple violates? :D

iPhone was then, and will be again, two years ahead of the competition.

Hmm... where is my video recorder? Where is my gesture-enabled iPhone OS (and I'm not talking about pinching)? Where is my multitasking that a WM phone could do 2 years ago? But hey, it has an Apple logo on it, I have to deal with Apple's smugness.

Also many people (not all) don't realize the thing that makes the G1 and iPhone so special is because when you jailbreak, you open up a whole new world aside from the already greatness of the iphone. Do you think people care about their /Applications folder?

Does the pre have a GBA emulator? No.

Does it have a NES emulator? No.

No, but it does have an MS Office compatible suite. But I guess playing emulated games is more important than that.

The whole classic emulation isn't really that big of a deal, since I just havn't really heard of that many Palm apps, or any for that matter besides solitaire or something.... Either way the Pre itself is as sandboxed and locked as the iPhone.

I haven't heard that the Earth is not flat. It's not really that big of a deal anyway.
Palm OS has 50,000 apps already, most of them useful and not farting apps.

Alot of people make a big deal because you CAN (cue omg) make an appointment on your calendar and write an email at the same time! GASP! But isn't it NICE to have a device that doesn't stand in your way? Isn't it nice to not be annoyed when you want to switch to another app?

What should I do when I watch a show on my phone and then commercials come in and I want to browse the web? On the Pre I can just run both apps at the same time and know exactly when the show is back.

Sometimes I'm ashamed to be an Apple user. Some of you seem to follow Apple blindly and would be amazed even if they came with an iPoop on stage. Who needs common sense today? :D

Not even close. The only noteworthy handheld patent Apple has related to touch, is a specific method of determining which way to lock scrolling to. E.g. in Safari, locking to vertical scrolling most of the time. And it can be gotten around.

Not being able to (cue omg) write an email and go on your calendar at the same time! GASP!

Once you have had an ability, it's hard to give it up.

The iPhone's lack of linear context, due to no multitasking, is also very distracting. We have a field app... click on an address field and you're taken to the map app, where you could do a further search and do sub-lookups:

Context is no problem with multitasking on other phones, since as you leave each app and move backwards, you're instantly in the same context where you started. On the iPhone, you'd have to find and re-launch each app in the chain, and hope it remembers what you were doing.

Apple owns the patents for Multi-touch on smart phones. Fingerworks is part of Apple's IP and has long since been extended with patents awarded for that specific type of computing device.

Sorry to cut your quote it was really long. I agree with all of it though. The thing is the SDK is out - it's just a metered release. All the major Palm developers have it and have given it rave reviews, and the smaller guys can sign up now and they are moving through the requests and approving batches. The thing doesn't launch for another 2 weeks so I wouldn't worry too much about the Apps.

The major ones are covered already anyway:
-GoogleMaps
-Multi-protocol IM client (smartly integrated into the text message client)
-DataViz Docs2Go (MS Office read/write)
-AmazonMusic Store (amazing interface to find/buy music, in unprotected MP3 format over the web not limited to WIFI)
-Pandora
-Yahoo
-AOL
-Fandango
-telenav
-mobiTV

Anybody legitamely interested in development for the Pre should read the CTO of Pandora's interview here:
