Palm Pre

i love how multitasking works via the expose like interface. my guess is that this is why we've not seen anything regarding push notification from apple. the pre's gui for handling multiple apps will make push notification look like a joke.

based on the latest rumor from zdnet regarding a quad core iphone coming along with the 3.0 firmware, we may see something similar from apple.

this is incredible because sero costs $30/mo for voice + unlim data, text. this might just stave off my iphone craving, esp saving $700 a year.

Wow, this is the upset of the century- it actually looks good!

That's great to hear even if I won't own one for awhile or ever, it's good to see some quality competition. It will push Apple to even bigger (or I guess smaller and thinner) and better things.

Where did you see that? That is a very great deal if true, depending also on hardware cost.

I think as well the product is really looking good but I am really worried for Palm, is this their last attempt. What they really miss on my advice is a better marketing.

Look the iphone, it was an event before the launch. Successful products know how to make people queuing and camping in front of the store, literally. Like Sony Playstation, World of Warcraft, IPhone.

Palm doesn't make me dream anymore. So I will not buy.

Today they didn't release an unlocked GSM model too...I would have given it a hard look.

But its a very nice looking phone, for sure!

It looks like the best iPhone competition to date. I was looking at it earlier and it's a bummer it's only on Sprint, but I would never leave iPhone anyways... Looks like a solid phone, great OS, let's just see if it can deliver in the real world. Many thought the same of the Storm, and it failed (not sales, but overall quality and competition for iPhone). I'm rooting for it because right now Apple could use some competition that will influence them into packing more features for us iPhone users!

Iwas a die hard Palm fan before I got my iphone. I thought, like many others that Palm had given up, and they would never get in the game.
After seeing this phone, I think they finally stepped up to the plate. Curious to see if they can hit it out now....

If this phone works as well as it is advertised to, it should give the iphone a run for it's money. It does all of the things, that the iphone wont do. It does all of the things that there are NUMEROUS THREADS on here with people complaing about the iphone NOT doing. I think as long as this phone is stable, and works as advertised, it will be a true "iphone killer".
I'm sure Apple will step it up now, and start working out some firmware / hardware upgrades. They might have some catching up to do.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the iphone, or Apple. But this phone looks like it will ROCK! I would seriously consider getting it when I'm due for an upgrade if Apple doesn't come up with the fixes that everyone has been screaming for for the past 6 months.

I'll stick with my trusty 3G for now of course, but will be watching to see if this Palm delivers.

Just my .02

There is video of the phone on Engadget. Having watched it, so far this is the first phone that I would consider a reasonable competitor to the iPhone in a few regards. Its not finished yet, and although its a very early impression, I am impressed.

This is definitely a good thing as it will mean Apple will have to up their game.

Its quite incredible to look at the mobile phone industry of recent and how it has changed. The way things have gone I see it that there was, Before iPhone and now After iPhone. There is no doubting that devices like this are coming out now because of the iPhone. Which in turn should push Apple to innovate even further.

Am looking forward to the reviews on this one.

If it actually pans out as a close iPhone competitor than I hope it forces Apple to innovate further and create something even better for the next generation. The form factor looks a bit funky IMO, but it seems to be turning out nicely.

****, I might buy one just to boost sells!!! Hahaha!!!

Palm just released their new phone, the Pre with their new OS and featuring a wireless charging system. What do you think about it and how it will compare to the iPhone? I guess we'll really have to see until reviewers get a hold of it but it looks interesting.

how long now until someone begins offering 3rd party wireless iPhone/iPod chargers?
thats gonna be sweet

So how is this wireless charger supposed to work?

Will it fry your pet's brain if it wanders between the phone and the charger? I'm not going to say that exploding cat heads would be bad for Sprint, but I don't think it could be all that good...

It works through contact with the phone. Apparently during the presentation they mentioned that it would respond depending on whether it was on the cradle, like if the phone was ringing while it was charging, picking the phone up off the charger answers the phone...it's a neat concept, and one that has been teased and promised for a while at trade shows. It is great to see a company run with it.

Though I wonder if there is a physical plug-in charger for car charging. Otherwise every pothole would disconnect your phone!

I wonder if this is going to help Palm or just be a footnote like the final hurrahs of the Amiga were for the Commodore empire. I mean... it looks pretty impressive, but this is Palm we're talking about. Their chances of not turning it into a failboat are slim at very best.

I think they still have a long road, but Palm has two (intertwined) advantages: they have a loyal base of users (PDA users and Treo users) who are very attached to Palm and will at least TRY the new phone if it gets decent reviews, and the people who bought Centros on the cheap who want to upgrade, liked their Centros, and see that the company that made that phone has an even cooler looking phone out. Hopefully between the two they'll build some momentum.

That would be interesting, but tough to do without some sort of adapter.

it's nice, but by the time this thing is out and doing decent, Apple will have the next iPhone already announced and probably released, beating this phone. it's just one whole circle chase.

Haha, yea I thought of this as well. If this thing is released in June a lot of folks will buy, then when they find out the thing is overheating or something and melting the already cracking plastic housing then the new one will come out with all these problems, or some, ironed out.

It will never end, truly.

Looks great...engadget seems to love it too. Glad palm isn't going bust then! This is one killer-product.

No.

The whole point of inductive charging is that there is no physical contact.

It works less well as you move it away, but it doesn't have to touch.

Well, I cant really see people not putting it on the charging pad itself, but yea that is cool that its the first phone on the market to use inductive charging.

WOW i LOVED THAT THING AT THE FIRST SIGHT.
that multitasking, sweet small footprint OS!
ergonomic design.
you can search in one place everything even the web.
it send mms. gestures out the screen. dock. fluid really-really nice interface.
wireless charging. wow.
fluid interface with real time keys. wow!

if iphone OS isn't rethinked this boy will win all the races.
oh yes! go-go palm!

Yup. Sounds like a great idea. "Charge without plugging in. You only need to PLUG IN the adaptor for the charger to work wirelessly" :p

I think apple has to step it up. The iPhone almost looks dated next to this. It has every feature I want in the iPhone: expose for current open apps, system-wide spotlight, mms, replaceable battery, backgound apps with notifications, and flash support. The UI was practically stolen from OS X from the curved edges with the shadow effects, icons, iCal colors. If it isn't for the app store I would say apple is in for a little bit of trouble (also having not seen OS 3.0). The only UI mess up was the keyboard can't be used in landscape mode.

The one thing I am wondering about though is the multitouch. Apple has a ton of patents on this and palm has seemed to use most if not all of the multitouch gestures including adding some of their own. Are there going to be some lawsuits coming? No other handset manufacturer has used the multitouch gestures yet including android. I think intentionally.

I'm as much an apple fan as most but they better redesign the OS to compete
with what palm just did.

I'm pretty sure we will see an over haul in firmware 3.0, as well as even a better designed device.

1.0 was the basic iPhone. 2.0 was the app store, so what will 3.0 be?

Apple knows all this. They have the perfect chance now, as they do every year, because everyone else announces their phones now, but they don't come out till later. Apple releases iPhone information close to launch, and then it's out, and will be much better than what the competitors have. We are going to see MANY decent iPhone competitors in '09, but chances are, iPhone will always be king.

It's like cars. Most car company's compare their cars to BMW's. Most, if not all touch screen phone makers will compare their device to the iPhone. That's what the iPhone has lived up to be.
