Agreed.

It's also making me think back to 1.0 to now 2.2 and how little Apple has really done with the iPhone besides fixing bugs and adding a few features.

I really hope they blow us away with something new this year.

I doubt it. Look at what Palm did in a year. Just about everything the iPhone can't do, the Pre can do. We'll probably get some stupid new calculator. The OS and built in apps functionality has been stuck. They can't even get PUSH out in time. I think Apple was caught sleeping with this one.

The other thing is this Spotlight type search. Thats something that I can't believe isn't there yet on the iPhone. It isn't even in the iPod application while an iPod nano can search its contents. One thing that these phones with physical keys get to do is allow you to start typing when nothing is up on the screen so the phone can assume you want to search for something. On the iPhone you don't have this luxury and have to bring up a keyboard. They might have to do more work around that Home button and long holds and triple clicks.
They tried to do something like this on Jailbroken apps with a program called Quickgold.

You have to press the home button when on the springboard to bring up the search. It doesn't look as elegant, and only searches through apps, but it was cool a few months ago (and of course, before Palm's announcement. I hated it though because with the 2.2 update, the press of the Home button returned you to the 1st page, and I liked that. But with Quickgold overlaying that, I got annoyed having Quickgold come up everytime I just wanted to zip back to the 1st screen.

As you said, having a physical keyboards means you can start typing right away instead of dealing with the Home Button nonsense. Great observations.

I'm telling you, a lot of the jailbreaking folks are a bit jealous. ;)

Only thing annoying I see is that if you're browsing the web in landscape view, you have to turn it back to portrait to type something. There are 2 ways around this.

1) The Google Android had a touchscreen keyboard added to it via the open source App Store that allowed you to browse it in landscape or portrait mode, like the iPhone. It would be no problem to add this to the Palm Pimp's app store.

2) If Palm bites the bullet and simply adds a landscape keyboard by launch, physical or touchscreen.

Just posted in the other thread...I'm very excited about this. Been a longtime palm fan and have been secretely rooting for them. Glad to see they're taking this seriously and not taking any prisoners. Finally I can buy another palm devices

Thank you Jon Rubinstein and thank you Palm

*Waiting for *insert lame/ridiculous comparison* like iPhone

For everyone booing that it's only on Sprint, forgetting that palm's Centro shipped on Sprint first then also came to Verizon and AT&T and unlocked? Also they are the makers of the Treo pro which is only available GSM unlocked?

They said Sprint gets it the first half of the year but they also said unlocked Gsm during the second half. So why all they hate that Sprint gets to Beta test for us?

Good post. At least someone is carefully listening to the customers. Thanks Palm. Too bad I just switched from Sprint.

I think it looks pretty interesting. Can't wait to read some reviews. I wish they hadn't picked Sprint to carry this.

I bet when adobe has it done for the pre palm wont stop them.

Flash is pointless on phones. It's terrible on a regular computer...why would I want that on my phone?

Because Sprint is on the verge of dying. If Sprint goes, Palm goes.

Now this looks like a phone that could really give the iPhone some competition! Aside from all the other goodies it also has 8GB of internal memory...something that the other companies just can't seem to do.

This is Revenge of the Treo!. Many of us tend to forget that when the Treo 600 was released, it had rave reviews and did very well. (I still got a functioning unit!). Then the Treo 650 is like the Rev B and was really good in its day, from there. innovation stagnates. A couple more years or so later, iPhone came to the scene.

I am rooting for Palm to give iPhone some good kick in the ass it needed becuase after 1 year of release, it is begining to stagnate!. The Pre appears to have a few things the iPhone severely lacks, like a keyboard and A2DP. It OS seems pretty cool from a UI perspective. Hoping that it will be as flexible as Andriod.
I am very disappointed in Andriod handset releases. It has been ages and it is not even 30% of iPhone usability ?. Hey Google, are you guys running the Andriod team on a shoe-string budget ?. Or what ?.
Palm has the experience and know-how, and with the right leadership, they can beat Apple (seriously).:D {I said I wanted to see serious competition!}

got to remember this is an open platform like android. things like flash block can be added to the browser (which is webkit) through an app store to keep you away from those annoying ads while giving you the ability to watch hulu.

I really commend Palm for what looks like an excellent phone. I don't really care for it though since it's probably not available in Canada!!

Either way, this will push Apple to raise the bar even higher. Can't wait!

No.

The whole point of inductive charging is that there is no physical contact.

It works less well as you move it away, but it doesn't have to touch.

Did not know that. As always you are a fountain of useful information!

Well, Palm has been developing this for several years. It was code-named "Nova", and IIRC it's been in development for at least 2 years if not longer.

I saw the video and they said the apps come out like cards, this should have been the Palm BlackJack lol.

if this phone was on a real network I think it may draw some attention.

Now that the iPhone isn't the only kid on the block maybe they will spiff up the device.

Ohhh boy, now she's gonna eat you.

Run!!!!!

On a more serious note. I watched the vids of the Pre and I must say I am very impressed with them. I think its just like the iphone in many ways which is a good thing and offers some more variety when choosing a smart phone. I might actually consider one instead of an iphone.
