No they haven't already done that. They haven't written any software solution. What they have done is stoop to having their product lie to the system in order to work with software in a way it isn't allowed.

If these users want the choice of using Apple's software, THEN BUY AN APPLE DEVICE for which the software is made. Otherwise, they should goad Palm to write their own syncing solution like other vendors.

It is pathetic.

Personally the part that I find pathetic and funny is how much this rattles the cage of so many of the apple fans out there.

They scream about how it is so wrong. how palm should make there own software ect. while the rest of the world does not care. Many people I have talk to out side of the apple fan club seem to think apple is being a big bully here.

Good news, then! Safari, Firefox and every other good browser out there is Windows only compatible now, and Apple is issuing an update to Snow Leopard so you can't use old versions anymore. Guess you're just going to have to buy a PC :D

You again ;)

Who cares what popular opinion is. I bet these people you've talked to wouldn't let me sample their bank account and give it to the homeless so I can "ensure everyone has a fair and equal opportunity for all to seamlessly have access to their funds", right? Else I expect you to PM me credit card and account numbers.

Of course not. What's that got to do with anything? If it weren't for popular opinion I could be president right now!! This is why popular opinion is important.

This only effects people with a Palm and yet it's a bunch of people who don't own one that for some reason are so distraught over this. This has nothing to do with non-palm owners! Move on!

The point is, anyone who is saying that Apple is a "big bully" is blatantly disregarding the facts. It would be one thing to say that Apple and Palm are wrong. My opinion? Palm is making serious missteps (and I can argue this assertion), but to say that Apple is the only guilty party in this foray is just silly . Those with think this probably don't have a good handle on Economics, Business or IP. I can't really fathom how the victim of a wrongdoing is vilified for fortifying their defenses to avoid another intrusion, but perhaps my perception is blinded by the kool-aid of reason with a dash of "you aren't always entitled to everything"

I'd HATE to be a Pre user with all of this crap.

Why? It's not like every update to iTunes is life inspiring. There are a number of sites where users can download previous versions of iTunes. Now pre users can use 9.01. Even if apple patches it pre users don't have to upgrade.

If anyone can give me a reason why Apple should intentionally block the Palm Pre from syncing again, I'd love to know, because I can't think of one.

Hmmm... iTunes: Copyright Apple Inc. 2000-2009....

Sounds like a good enough reason to me. Apple owns iTunes and thusly can legally control who has the ability to integrate with it. Thats the only important thing here. Palm has no rights to iTunes - none. That right is retained by Apple.

Oh here's this "The company's rights are more important the the consumer's"

Seriously, what difference does it make to me and you if a Palm Pre user can sync their music the way they want to?

Yeah, but why would you want to go through the trouble. If I were a potential phone buyer, I would look at this and go to another option. The way Palm has gone about it this would make me question their reliability and the sanity of the people in charge. This is not what a good reliable phone maker should do.
Consider this: You buy a Pre. You get it home. You try to sync it with iTunes(which Palm says it should do). But just a few days ago you updated iTunes, and your phone won't sync. Do you blame Apple for this? Or do you blame Palm for this? And Why?

Go through the trouble as a phone buyer? Trouble you say? Follow the jailbreaking community, there are a lot of users that go through a lot of trouble just for a phone.

Yeah but was any applicaiton or hack available through Cydia advertised by Apple as a legitimate function but implemented via a illegitimate backdoor hack?

I give you exhibit A.

Here’s my response. Irrelevant. Palm has no rights to iTunes. Customers be damned because they have no say in the matter. Apple owns iTunes. Palm therefore has no rights to any of it.

Seriously, what difference does it make to me and you if a Palm Pre user can sync their music the way they want to?

Because thats not how things work. You might as well ask “why can’t I have a pony?” It doesn’t matter what you want. What matters is what you are allowed to have access to. Palm has no rights to access iTunes in the way that they want to. Apple has explicitly said no.

What if I said that you should provide me free access into your house and fridge? Would you be all right with that? I mean what difference does it make if I get what I want.

iTunes is Apple’s intellectual property. It does not matter what you or I want because we are not the relevant interest here. We are just agents of Apple or Palm. The only relevance here is who controls iTunes. The answer is Apple. Thats all that matters. Palm never even attempted to ask Apple for access into iTunes. They just barged in. Not even in real life is this cool.

Palm has several legitimate routes to access the same end game to suit their needs. They never even attempted to do the legit act. They decided to break in and complain when they get tossed on their asses. I thought it was amusing the first time. But the minute that Apple said “no” they should have released their own solution.

The software industry works when people play by the rules. One of those rules is that you respect ownership of the intellectual property of others. Palm is flagrantly violating that trust. Your attempts to shift the target of the debate is not going to work.

how does your reply relate to my post. Did I mention 1 thing about Palm advertising the sync as a feature?
No I don't think so. I simply compared/related the trouble jailbreakers go through for a phone. Never did I mention whether or not Apple condoned jailbreaking. Nor did I mention Palm's actions, which I applaud. I compared the users experience.

I'm getting so sick of this from Palm.

Make a decent phone, a decent OS, and your own syncing software that pairs with the iTunes library.

This is what really turned me off from doing any business with the new Palm.

They could have easily given a sweetheart deal to any one of a dozen music sync portals that would have endorsed Pre support for free just to get the increase in user base. Instead, this happens; it reflects a lot of the corporate culture that is the post-Jeff Hawkins Palm.

This cat and mouse sync game that Palm is condoning makes me question their management's scruples. If this was some third party hack, it would be understandable. But for it to be an official update from Palm? What other subversive code is in the their webOS that has yet to be discovered? Somehow, there is a good back story on how webOS came about and how Access was thrown out of the deal.

I'm sure there are a lot of ex-Apple employees at Palm getting their licks in on one of their former employers here.

But your reply to my post seemed to equate the actions of Palm with the jail-break community. This is not a 1 for 1 comparison. Individuals who jail-break their phones does not equal Palm advertising a hack of iTunes as a feature.
The average person doesn't want a hack. They want a device that works as advertised. Palm can't guarantee that the Pre will sync with iTunes because it is not supported. That is the point.

Looking back at my posts I never mentioned the actions of Palm, only commented from a user's perspective. If I mentioned or compared Palms actions to Jailbreaking please point it out to me.

Still, what is Apple's reason for intentionally blocking the Palm Pre? Is their any reason other than copyrights? It's like saying "You're not allowed to drive a Honda on this road, only Toyotas, because we said so." Your fridge analogy is not a good one. By not blocking the Palm Pre nothing is being taken from Apple, whereas allowing you access to my fridge, something is.

I totally agree.

If they don't block them Apple would likely have to answer itunes support calls from Pre users who have trouble syncing their phones. Blocking the Pre is most likely a legal move to protect them from lawsuits. Just like an office building or a mall not allowing skate boarders. They don't want the legal hassle.
