I had the first version of Parallels, which was a miserable experience. Then they charged full price to move to the second version (which really should have been the first, while the first should have been a free beta).

I learned my lesson. I no longer give my money to companies that treat their customers as beta-testers.

I continue to use Parallels and I was one of the early beta testers as well. You are right, the first couple versions were rough going.

But I have to say, as of version 5, I am able to play games on my VM and forget about dual booting. I specifically use it to play DDO and it works fine.

Part of my solution to the performance problem was going to the new 15" MBP sporting a i7 and 8gb of ram. This thing is a beast. In a good way...

I can't get it to work on the VMware site either. Is that where you purchased yours?

Personally, I think they fixed that loop hole. It accepted SAVE20 but didn't give any discount. SAVE10 gave an error.

However, I have wasted $10 on less.

I very much agree with this. The early versions were more like betas, and there were some odd quirks even as late as v 4. 5 seems to run well for me, and hopefully 6 is stable too. But Parallels, being what is it, loves powerful hardware. They do a good job queezing out what performance they have, but it's a no brainer that this product will be more useful to you the more cpu and RAM you have to throw at it. v 5 runs very nicely on my i7 8GB imac. Even for (a fair amount of) gaming, if you aren't concerned too much about graphical glitz. (Anything modern I still do in bootcamp because why not. But for older stuff, Parallels is perfectly fine.)

Cool, now iPad owners can get a preview of how crappy Windows 7-based slates are going to be. :D

They (government) should consider developing only web-based applications. Only then will I be free! (Provided, however, they don't use Flash).

Agreed. With all the rules regarding government procurement and vendor source diversity, it boggles my mind that government can legally standardize on a single product line from a single company (Microsoft). Windows, Office, IE, SharePoint, Visio, Project, SharePoint Designer...almost no competitors' products in sight. Just Uncle Sam writing Uncle Ballmer those big, fat checks.

(Sadly, "web-based applications" to many government organizations means "written exclusively for IE 6." :( )

Flight Simulator?

I have one single tie to Windows leftover in my computer life; Microsoft Flight Simulator. For this single pastime, I have to use Boot Camp - which works flawlessly except for, you know... the Windows part.

Does anyone know if Flight Simulator X will run decently in Parallels with the new support for 3D gaming? I'm not too savvy on the 3D gaming lingo (direct x, open GL) but if anyone can tell me if it sounds like FSX will run reasonably well compared to dual-booting, I'd be SOO happy to never option+restart my Mac again!

Thanks!

Stopped using Windows altogether, still have VMWare 3 just incase. VMWare supports Mac OS X Server as a guest os, does Parallels support OS X Server ?

Fusion got my money

.. but not before Parallels 6 did.

I upgraded to Parallels 6 since I was so happy with 5 and I thought they refined perfection.

I was wrong.

I upgraded and instantly had problems with the mouse - clicking on one VM would instantly hide that VM and click on an icon in the VM behind it. Dragging and dropping got "stuck" so that dragging something, once, caused the mouse to get stuck on "clicked". In other words, even though I let go of the mouse button, the dragged object didn't let go and drop.

There were other problems too, way too many to list, but I can tell you that after contacting support, I got instructions to "reinstall parallels tools". No thanks, been there done that, that's not the problem.

AVOID PARALLELS 6. I'm an MCSE with desktop and network admin experience since 1997.

VMware, the primary competitor of Parallels in the consumer operating system virtualization market, has responded with an offer allowing users of any version of Parallels to switch to VMware 3 for only $9.99. Users of VMware Fusion 1 and 2 are also eligible for the discounted upgrade pricing, and the offer is valid through December 31st, 2010. Meanwhile brand new customers are offered 30% off of the retail price.

what happens to your Parellels license after upgrading?

So, what happens when you upgrade from Parallels to VMware Fusion?

You give VMware your Parallels' serial key. Is your Parallels license going to be invalid? Can you still use your old Parallels?

Outlook: Holy Moly, is that ever a cluttered pile of crap or what? I’m surprised there isn’t a DNA chart of the person you’re emailing along with grid coordinates and ancestry records.

Umm...in the screenshot, it shows the e-mail address of the person it came from. You know, exactly the same as any other mail client.

If you do so and you are using an Exchange account on a domain, you can view additional information about that user (like AD info and things like who they are and what their job is--helpful at big organizations), and you can integrate Office Communicator with it so you can see their online/offline status and "IM" them about an e-mail.

Again, this is all if you use it. If not, I don't see how it's any different, and the AD integration is a nice thing, not a bad thing. There are many other things to complain about in Outlook (like who thought backstage view in Office 2010 was a good idea and who wrote the rendering engine), but this is not one of them.

Upgraded to 6 and no problems so far. gonna test the mobile app on my ipad.

Virtual win 7 pro and Ubuntu 10.04 updated fine.

Well, it's good to hear that they finally delivered a decent product. But yeah, that first version was pure trash.

The SAVE20 does not work on the VMWARE 3.0 upgrade. Just tried it.

I have both licenses to Fusion and parallels desktop.

Upgrade to Parallels 6.0: $49
Upgrade to Fusion 3.0: $10

Hmm..

Hmm... I paid to upgrade from 4 to 5, and didn't notice any difference. The crystal-view mode seemed exactly like the coherence-view mode.
I don't see anything of significance in version 6, so I'll be sitting this one out. Call me when something interesting happens. Lol :p

Me too...

I paid for the upgrade to version 5 three months ago just to get crystal mode working, but I still can't get rid of the stupid blue Windows XP start bar... can anyone help me get rid of it?

It's not like VMWare can go into Parrallel's key database and invalidate your key, now is it? Your key will continue to function.

tried the ipad app, its a gimmick TOO SLOW and hard to see the fonts, windows UI just does not work as well as native ipad ios etc..

Yeah windows 7 on a tablets gonna suck hehe.

Sweet, my Parallels 5 trial ends in 3 days. :D

Time to use my other fake email and try Parallels 6 for two more weeks.

Gotta love free stuff.

Lol does that really work? Can you keep switching between alternate emails? Or do they track it by IP address?

I tried Parallels 6 with my new 2010 iMac (lowest model). It runs very slowly in coherence mode. Did I set something up wrong? VMware 3 flies on machine.

I bought it... try to run Linux as guest. It worn't install parallels tools for linux.
So if you need a linux guest, use VMWare.
Then they asked for $50 to upgrade me to new version.
Bye, bye parallels.

Had no issues upgrading Windows 7 VM. CentOS, I had to mount the CD manually, but that's been a known thing for a while. No issues updating the tools after that. It does change the realtek adapters to Intel E1000's, so have to update/"activate" the new network config. Windows 7 also handled changing the boot drive to SATA from IDE with no problems.

I can't say the Linux update for CentOS is as smooth as it could be, but if you're using Linux you should know enough to work around the issues.

So far, everything seems to run just fine. As I've got both VMware and Parallels running Linux, I can't agree that one is better than the other in that respect.
