I tried Parallels 6 with my new 2010 iMac (lowest model). It runs very slowly in coherence mode. Did I set something up wrong? VMware 3 flies on machine.

P5 was very laggy on my MBA guessing due to ram and heat issues.. Going to try it on my new 13" MBP. I'd like to play a few Steam games that are not avail on Mac yet.. Try a Windows update for graphics driver.

If you, like me, got the advanced upgrade to 6 for existing users, a newer build is now available:

Build 6.0.11822
(Revision 604190; September 14, 2010)

From the 'Parallels Desktop' menu, click on 'Check For Updates'.

It downloads ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-6.0.11822.604190.dmg from which you can install the update.

The previous was ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-6.0.11820.602974.dmg

Stopped using Windows altogether, still have VMWare 3 just incase. VMWare supports Mac OS X Server as a guest os, does Parallels support OS X Server ?

VirtualBox also supports OS X Server.

Yup, 10.5 and 10.6 server as well as Chrome OS. Looks like they official Linux support has improved.

With the E1000's as network cards, I should be able to ditch VMware alltogether now.

I bought Parallels 5 from Amazon on the 9/10 when it was $39.99 knowing I would get the $20 rebate that Amazon mentions and be able to upgrade to Parallels 6 basically for $20.

When I received my delivery today, there is actually an "Everyday Rebate" for $20 and a $20 competitive rebate in the box, basically making it free for me. The price for Parallels 5 is now $49.99 but it looks like the rebates are still applicable which would make it $10 after rebates (assuming you have a previous version of Parallels or Fusion).

Having used both off and on for over two years I can honestly say that when Parallels works it is faster than VMware but when it fails it fails HARD.

I thought I lost my Boot Camp install a few months ago when Parallels went stoopid on me.

VMware is more stable, albeit slower... but it is now my virtual personal install of choice.

Version 4 of Parallels was a complete disaster for me.
It was full of bugs and glitches. And yes, sigh, it corrupted a VM on me.

I ran 5 for close to a year and had no issues with it.

I've just upgraded to 6. Touch wood, I'm hoping it'll be okay too!

I'm a software developer and appreciate the extra performance that Parallels has over VMware's lauded stability. I also backup regularly.
Plus, for me, having decent DX10 / Aero support is oh-so-important when you're developing using WPF.

I had the same experience. The last version of Parallels that I used was 3.x. I bought the upgrade to 5 but could never get it to run my existing virtual machine, and I didn't want to go through the trouble of starting over again. So I switched to Fusion and it just worked.

I haven't benchmarked it in comparison to Parallels, but I don't care, since I don't do any gaming or other intensive work with it.

I started my VMs from scratch with 5 as, they didn't move from 3 or 4 cleanly at all for me. I hope, and expect, that it has improved now in later builds!

As far as i know, version 5 was a heavy, heavy rewrite from its predecessors to address architectural limitations.

Version 6 seems to be incremental improvements to that codebase.

Woo, just noticed, they've finally added NX bit (DEP) support to 6!

I'm sure the software has improved by leaps and bounds, but I had the first version of Parallels... and the second... and the third... I finally made the jump to VMWare Fusion, and I find it to be a MUCH more stable product. However, if the recent performance numbers are true, maybe Parallels is faster now? Still, I'm pretty happy with VMWare, and I won't switch back, but I hope this motivates VMWare to step their game up!

I upgraded to Parallels 6 a few days ago. I moved from VMWare about a year ago because at the time, P5 definitely performed faster for me. P6 is even faster than P5 when it comes to starting and suspending VMs. I'm on a fast Mac Pro though with lots of memory and the kernel runs in 64-bit mode. I had no problems updating Parallel Tools in my existing Windows VMs. Is the upgrade worth 50 bucks...well... it's a great piece of software but I think they really should have offered the upgrade for 30 or 40 bucks. I also find the inclusion of so called "free" anti virus software a bit of a joke because you still have to buy a license if you want to use it properly.

The P6 iPad app is a nice gadget even though I probably won't use it a lot. Works fine and is super easy to setup and use.

I was able to save myself a couple of bucks when upgrading from P5 to P6 on taxes. I just changed the country to Virgin Islands and the tax was removed from the invoice :)

Great!!!, I was going to upgrade mine soon anyway.

I also need a second copy so is there any reason I cant just buy this and then pay the 9.99 upgrade ?

Also with these sort of deals, once you upgrade do you send them your old copy of the competitors product to stop you using both ?

I wonder how Parallels will react to this offer??? Maybe a similar price drop ?

I had the first version of Parallels, which was a miserable experience. Then they charged full price to move to the second version (which really should have been the first, while the first should have been a free beta).

I learned my lesson. I no longer give my money to companies that treat their customers as beta-testers.

So by your logic, you should never buy a ford since at one time they only shipped them in black, and by that they didn't give their customers choice?? That was a long time ago, they are offering discounted upgrades currently for even way, way, way old versions (and have for a long time). Companies grow and mature, and make your assessment off their current behavior

Bear in mind that VMWare 3 came out in early Oct of last year. Since VMWare's release cycles are a little more than a year long in order to make their $29.95 "upgrade protection for a year" program worthless to its buyers, there's a real good chance that VMWare 4 is released in 2-3 months. You'd probably have to fork over the full upgrade price to update, which means the total upgrade price to VMWare 4 (including the $9.95 you paid today) isn't necessarily so attractive. Now I've never used either of these so I have no dog in this hunt, but if price is your primary motive for going VMWare I would be wary.

Umm...in the screenshot, it shows the e-mail address of the person it came from. You know, exactly the same as any other mail client.

If you do so and you are using an Exchange account on a domain, you can view additional information about that user (like AD info and things like who they are and what their job is--helpful at big organizations), and you can integrate Office Communicator with it so you can see their online/offline status and "IM" them about an e-mail.

Again, this is all if you use it. If not, I don't see how it's any different, and the AD integration is a nice thing, not a bad thing. There are many other things to complain about in Outlook (like who thought backstage view in Office 2010 was a good idea and who wrote the rendering engine), but this is not one of them.

I think what Digital Dude is rightly complaining about is the cluttered, confusing and ugly mess that is what Microsoft call a User Interface.

Anyone having trouble setting up a VM from Boot Camp?

I'm not getting the option to choose Boot Camp partition from the "Create New Virtual Machine" window.

Is this just a limitation of the trial? If it works, I've got my credit card ready... but I just need to test it first!

After the parallels 3 fiasco when I moved to SL, I decided to ditch it all together. I've been looking for a chance to have a play with VMWare :)

btw it there is 15% extra tax charge when 'importing' into Europe. But still a good bargain.

Have Parallels 3, but can't use with Snow Leopard. Haven't needed it until now... But can someone convince me why I shouldn't go with VMware for $10? That's pretty attractive...

Well, depends what you want from you VM? I have to be honest, for $10 you really can't go wrong and VMWARE is a cracking piece of software and from my experience will work just as well as Parallels.
Some features of Parallels are nice though.

My experiences with this new parallels are great sofar. I've used Parallels with my Bootcamp partition since that's been an option and always upgraded to the latest version, but this might be the biggest single performance jump i've seen..

I'm running Windows7 64 bit on a 6GB iMac 8,1 (8800GS), I can happily play L4D with no issues now, which wasn't the case before! The sound would glitch a bit in earlier VMs.. I haven't tried other games (not much point, I have a much more powerful gaming pc so I dont need stuff to run that well on my imac) But Parallels feels like it's really matured now, Win7 boots super fast and doesn't slow my osX massively when it's running. Very, very impressed!

If anyone has any requests for games to try, I could try running mass effect 2, etc.. Crysis caused my imac to freeze on medium settings, but it looked like it was going to work until that happened, lol.

Its getting to the stage now where it may finally be viable to ditch the bootcamp partition for gaming and use VM. If not, it's getting damn close. I like the idea of auto-expanding virtual discs, it certainly beats wasting masses of space guessing how much Windows will need.

They dont work....posting a picture does not change that.

They /did/ work yesterday morning. My original post was meant to pass the info to other people—and the SS to prove I wasn't lying, which I am not. If it doesn't work now, something changed. Sorry about your luck.

(Sadly, "web-based applications" to many government organizations means "written exclusively for IE 6." :( )

This. I work in IT running a network that has to connect to government web services. IE6 only. If a computer upgrades to any other version of internet explorer, the website site crashes the browser. It's embarrassing.
