Can't he walk into Verizon get s SIM card? Since now he owns the line?
Yes but the in-store reps are evil and will likely say the problem is that you aren't supposed to be able to AOL a UDP line which is entirely false. But I guarantee they would say it.
Or is the problem because the phone is still on his old line?
While it could be a SIM card issue with the iP5 SIM card, how likely is that given it was working fine just a month ago and he never took it out of the phone? Extremely unlikely.
My fear is that these SIM card tricks create unforeseen consequences b/c whether or not anyone here wants to believe me -
VERIZON'S NETWORK IS NOT A GSM NETWORK - IT IS A CDMA/LTE HYBRID NETWORK AND THERE IS A DEVICE MANAGEMENT DATABASE THAT ACTS AS A GATEKEEPER TO THE CDMA NETWORK.
With LTE only devices you can get away with the SIM card tricks easier b/c those devices aren't trying to access the CDMA network. But a phone is.

so bottom line, Jules?
put a PDI before AOL it off to someone??
I would - tell the buyer they cannot suspend w/o billing with the PDI on the line and have to be ready to put a Verizon 4G LTE smartphone on the line upon receipt.
Also - warn them if they put a basic phone on the line they will lose their UDP b/c the data plan will drop off and they won't be able to get it back. In reality they probably could get it back with an IPR, but with these new lines, who knows.

Okay, so there seems to be new issues that may arise regarding the same phone on two lines or something?
I was just wondering if I am at risk for potentially screwing up any transfers. This is what I generally do:
Open box
Activate Phone, make a phone call/test Safari
Take out SIM card
Factory Restore
Put it back in the box
I then go to My Verizon and make sure it has unlimited data, and then proceed with AOLing if I am giving the line away.
If the person receiving the line puts a Verizon phone on the line right away, it should be fine. But if they don't, the person receiving the phone may have issues activating it b/c it will still be on the line you AOL'ed.
Buy a cheap Verizon 4G LTE phone with a cracked screen that still works and put that on the line to get the iPhone off. Then when you AOL the line, have the rep put the PDI on the line.
