That's my thinking too. Obviously nobody in Apple every thought that far. But flexibility ain't Apples strong point anyway.

I think a security problem of this would be the ease of picking up someone else's cards and doing the same thing. Given, very low possibility but still. I do think Apple completely screwed up the launch of Passbook but that's the downside of making everything require an app to put the code in PB - have to wait on the app makes to update their apps. However, Apple should have gotten with a few companies and had them lined up. I mean in the keynote the big push was Starbucks and yet Starbucks says they won't update their app until the end of the month? Just bad planning all around.

Settle down and get a grip on your emotions, sweetheart. I didn't say the App Store link doesn't work for everyone, just many of us. And yes, one can rig it to work by setting the system date of our phone a year in the future, but that's not the point. The point is that most people won't read through online forums to discover how to rig it.

LMFAO well "darling" there was no "rig" needed in setting it up. Much like it was advertised it just worked. It's quite obvious there were some who had issues.

The comments were in regards to what it should be as opposed to what it is. If you don't fall in this category then your response is as off the mark as your intentions in responding.

For all you American Express cardmembers out there, Passbook is about to get a lot more interesting.

http://venturebeat.com/2012/09/21/amex-launches-integration-with-apples-passbook/

Before you get too excited, no you won’t be able to pay with AmEx using Passbook. (Most retailers don’t have the infrastructure to take payments like that.) But you will be able to get details on recent transactions as they happen.

. . .

In the initial release, AmEx will be able to notify cardholders when there’s a new transaction on their account. Cardholders can also see current balance and access other recent transactions and customer service information.

The real-time notification capability allows AmEx to have a two-way dialogue with consumers that hasn’t really existed before. This creates a channel that AmEx could use for new features:

- See nearby offers from merchants based on your phone’s location. AmEx has been a leader among the credit card companies in creating offers.

- If a charge is flagged by AmEx fraud systems as suspicious, the network could send a real-time alert to the user’s registered phone number. The user could then enter a PIN to verify the transaction. Or, the transaction could automatically be verified by determining that the phone is in the same location as the merchant. This would help alleviate the pain of false positives in fraud alerts, increasing legitimate transactions, decrease fraud, and decrease customer service calls. Even in the current implementation, simply knowing that a transaction was attempted in Fiji while you’re in Chicago helps to identify fraud.

- Real-time reviews. Once someone has dined at a restaurant and paid, the transaction alert could be used to solicit a review. This would allow AmEx to create a very powerful competitor to Yelp that avoids two of the biggest data problems with Yelp: it ensures that only verified customers can review a business, and it should increase the volume of data collected by closing the loop and soliciting feedback. (Disclosure: I am short $YELP.) As I’ve written before, transaction data makes AmEx the king of checkins.

- Real-time redemption of Membership Rewards points, AmEx’s loyalty program. When a transaction occurs, the notification could offer consumers the option to pay with points instead of with cash.

- Transaction review data for the blind. The real-time transaction information could be spoken to blind customers, allowing them to verify the transaction amount that was authorized and resolve any issues while they are still at a business instead of after the fact.

The Passbook integration will go live later today.

Emphasis added so people don't go astray thinking that AmEx's initial Passbook support is missing features.

I use cardstar. It does everything everyone was hoping Passbook would do.
No it doesn't.
It doesn't show CVS card automatically when I get to the local CVS store.
Nor it displays boarding pass when arriving at the airport.

Passbook has much potential if it works as advertised; it doesn't right now.

I just wanted to get some feedback. I bought the new iPhone 5 yesterday and anytime I tried to get to the app store via passbook it would not work. So basically I have an app that does nothing. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Oh yeah, the message appears "Cannot connect to itunes store" when I try to download an app via passbook. I tried using the "change the date" technique multiple times even escalating the years to 5 in advance, but nothing is working.

Thank you in advance.

I'm really eager to try Passbook out in the UK.

I'm hoping some of the bigger UK merchants below will be updating their apps to support Passbook soon.

Nectar Card
Tesco Club card
Boots Advantage card
Blockbuster Rental card
Starbucks
Costa Coffee
Subway

Guess I need to learn this thing.

But am I correct saying you can't PAY for things using passbook?

why does apple keep forcing random apps on me that dont even work in my region  passbook should be a appstore download like iBooks

I have same issue. The "fix" worked on my old iphone 4 but not on my 5. Any suggestions?
