Does it seem to take something like 5-6 confirmation dialogs to get a card added? I added a Walgreens cards for kicks, and it was a pain in the ass. Plus, I would rather the card came up in any Walgreens I happened to be nearby.

United needs to fix their app and you blame Apple? That's like your company going bankrupt and blaming the US Mint.

No, its more like the CEO blaming the janitor for his financial woes.

About 30 mins after my post Passbook decided to work with the United app.

Passbook worked at Walgreen just a few minutes ago, although they had to scan my card 3 times.

I find it amusing how many people are now disappointed in Passbook or think it sucks based on it's one-day availability. Let's see how many "moving pieces" need to be in place for Passbook to give a satisfying experience, and how unreasonable it is to expect it to work for everyone out of the gate.

First, you need to have some sort of data that will work with Passbook. Either a CURRENT boarding pass, ticket, or some other data (like a coupon or loyalty card). If Starbucks had updated Day One, odds are, people wouldn't be complaining, because they'd see how this works. But most of the other apps are unlikely going to have data you can use. If you really want to test it out, use Fandango to buy a movie ticket for this weekend. But if you don't have a "pass", of course you'll have a bad experience. Likewise if the stores you frequent aren't updated to use it yet.

Second, the location you're going needs to be using optical scanners, and not just laser-based scanners. The standard 2D barcodes you see on product packages do not work well when displayed on your phone and scanned by lasers. I use CardStar, and I frequently have issues with self-checkout machines being unable to scan these cards. 3D barcodes work best, and optical scanners are nearly a must. This is why you'll see some Fandango movie tickets will not present you with a barcode, because they know if that location has the hardware to read them or not. This is a huge problem, but one that is getting better. This is why it's a shame that Starbucks wasn't ready day one ... they already have the infrastructure in place.

Third, a big part of Passbook is the location/time awareness of your "passes," and their ability to update themselves. You can't experience this unless one of the other two issues above has been dealt with, and it depends on whether or not the pass supports it. Again, this will be loads better as the infrastructure improves.

I can't help but see the people going "Passbook sucks, I can't put anything in it," and noticing that they don't HAVE anything to put in it. If you don't have a Walgreens card, you're not going to be able to put it in there. And why would you want to put it in there if you didn't have one?

The fact of the matter is, when Passbook is working the way it was intended, you'll RARELY go into the app itself. The app will alert you and present itself when it needs to be used. This the way both Apple and the Vendors want it ... they want your primary experience to be in their apps. (This may even be why Starbucks is dragging it's feet, because it's existing experience is doing so well.) If you're complaining that you need another app, and that it should be self-contained in Passbook, you're missing the point. Your Starbucks card should pop-up when you walk into a Starbucks, so you can pay. If you want to add a card, or reload it, or something else, you go to the App. That's what Starbucks wants ... they want to own that relationship.

Passbook is designed to make it so that when you're going to go do something, you don't have to fumble through the iPhone and find the app to do it. It comes up, gets scanned, and gets out of your way. Expecting more from it is just silly.

Alright, this is seriously driving me crazy. I downloaded the Target app went to mobile coupons filled it out and now it says I'm waiting for a confirmation text. That was last night and I still didn't get one this morning. I deleted the app and tried again, still no text. I tried texting HELP to 827438 but my phone doesn't seem to allow short form texts. I then went to target.com on my Mac and filled out the text coupons. Still no confirmation text. What am I doing wrong here??????

Sorry if this has been covered already, but can someone explain how to get a coupon or boarding pass to show up on my lock screen? I can't figure it out...

Right now I have a target coupon in my passbook, and I have it set to show on the lock screen, but no idea how to get it to actually show.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!! :D

It's location based, once u get to the general area of the set card, it just pops up on the screen

I think Apple has done a very poor job of explaining how Passbook works. Even the built-in users' guide under Safari hasn't been updated to reflect the changes in iOS 6 - maybe when that happens there will be less confusion.

^^ This. I used the passsource.com to create three but stopped because there has to be a simpler way.

I created my Starbucks card there and added the card number. I will try it later today at a Starbucks

Worked for me. Just keep in mind that your PassSource-created card's balance label won't update. so you'll have to keep a mental track of what you really have left, or wait for the official Starbucks Passbook pass.

I suggest waiting until the official apps include passbook functionality. I use a couple that were already updated (Fandango and Target) and some that are not yet (Starbucks).

I will but wanted to test out more than just one. Added my best buy and starbucks cards for the fun of it.

I now see from target how coupons are pushed into passbook, however, I still really don't see the point in it if I can't just keep all my stuff in one spot. I mean I have store cards in the "key ring" app and what I'm seeing is I will still have to use key ring for those and passbook for others.

I've tried with Sephora and there was no notification when I arrived at my local sephora store even though I have location enabled.

It's possible this is a Maps problem. It's going to be using that data to find locations, and if Sephora locations aren't in Maps, it's probably not going to find them. It's a shame, really.

Worked for me when I did it this morning. You don't have any sort of filtering or blocking for your text messages, do you?

Walgreens updated its app with Passbook support, but I don't shop there, so I haven't used it. I imagine others will keep doing the same over time. Unless Apple bars it from happening, apps like Key Ring may include a way to export cards to Passbook. Thin Wallet, for example, is advertising a Passbook-compliant update in the future.

If that's the case then it won't work for quite a while.
But, yes, I checked the maps and there were no Sephora location (or any other stores in that open air shopping center).

I wish I could even get passbook to work. Set the time ahead a year to get it to load iTunes store and now it just sits at 'Loading...' indefinitely and never loads and apps. This has been the buggiest Apple update I've ever seen.

I think the problem is most people don't know what it's supposed to do, if it's working right, or why they need it

Passbook should've come with instructions. Instead they went, here, figure out this unintuitive mess yourself

The Passbook guys should be on lockdown with the maps guys

I've tried with Sephora and there was no notification when I arrived at my local sephora store even though I have location enabled.

Go into passbook and click on the sephora card and click on the little "i" on the bottom right. When the card flips over it should have a location address there, if not then the card doesnt support home page pop up, even tho there's an option for it.

Weird... I tuned my wifi off and now I can view/download the apps. Turn wifi back on I can't access the Passbook apps on the app store.

EDIT: seems the app store is just overloaded.

From what I'm seeing it appears the vast majority of Passbook apps aren't functioning properly or simply not working all together. I assume this is because the update is so new and companies are scrambling to get them to work properly (Walgreens app just gives errors when you try to apply your card). If Passbook still doesn't work flawlessly with current apps in a week I'll be shocked. Until then I'll reserve judgement.
