Oh wow is that a floppy disk drive I see on the bottom left side of the case? HAHAHAHA talk about redundant...

No, it's a PC card slot. You know, the type that MB/P's don't have for the sake of styling.

The Macbook could learn a few things from the CF-Y5 for example, but Apple don't have the engineering expertise of Panasonic or Sony to make it reality. So all they can do is to make'em pretty. Ah bless.

AH I see now, I just had a look at the Panasonic Toughbook page to check it out. It is classed as a PC Card Type II x I, whatever that means. Personally I think it's a dead standard because there's not much that a laptop doesn't have integrated into it already that you would need to buy as an add-on card. If there was something missing, there would already be a convenient USB device to use instead!

PC laptops are ugly if you choose to buy an ugly PC laptop.

There is one vendor of Apple laptops, Apple, and yes they are well designed generally. There are hundreds of wintel vendors, and yes, there's of cheap ugly crap out there, but if you specifically want a pretty laptop they're not hard to find. Just don't look at the £500 stand at PC World

At least you know how to spell ridiculous.;) I take some issue with that assertion though. some of the opinions, maybe. I was simply trying to point out that the premise of the title was tad too fanboy far-reaching. If I had some design alternatives with the mac line of notebooks, i would seriously consider something with a more severe industrial aesthetic. Don't get me wrong, love waking up to this beast every day:D

well they are usually ugly yup,but sony/hp/Asus make good looking notebook i bet...anyway here's my earlier Fujitsu Siemens laptop..and my spoiled new macbbook pro =D ,,notice the difference in size(they are both 15'' and placed on the same table)..remember,i got the siemens laptop last year and its one of the thinnest laptops XP..

That's some hardcore Mac on PC action there.

yup mac is so sexy that even that old ugly bustard was interested O_O

Samsung X-series. Perhaps the nicest laptop I've ever owned/seen. Compared to the Powerbooks of that day, the only areas that the PB owned in were the backlit-keyboard, and battery life. This laptop takes the cake in every other area.

so that one looks good?
look at the screws around the screen, the keyboard color, the shape of the ports on the side >_> ..and the little buttons above the keyboard..the design doesnt look good in anyway..and can even reach macs beauty :p

The look of the 15" and 17" PBs, and the MBPs that came after are starting to look stale. There....I said it.

Compared to?

I still think apples laptops are boring. Whats up with the 1 button trackpad?

They're understated. You must be in the market for one of these... that certainly isn't boring.

While i like my MBP, I do think the design needs some sort of update.

In what direction would you take the design?

I think docking stations are horrible.

The MBPs look fine. I don't think they really need a cosmetic update. Hard to improve what's already nearly perfect :)

Agree, Agree...

Maybe, but it's so much more convenient for me to walk into my office and drop my fugly Dell D810 into its docking station than to faff about with attaching mouse, keyboard, DVI cable and ethernet cable then disconnect them again when I have to into a meeting or it's time to go home.

Yes, that is so much more convenient for you. So lets modify the MacBook Pro to be super ugly for everyone else. Oh wait, you can just get this. Those actually give you more ports.

you don't need two buttons, the two finger right click works much better than just another button imo at least.

Agree

It is almost awesomely ugly. And I will probably end up buying at least one.

Wow, that is really ugly.

That would be the Dell Crack!book™, I believe.

that one looks EXTREMELY ugly IMO..look at the top and the back of it..see the keyboard color, just see the width of the laptop awwww i wouldnt pick it up from a trash can >_<

.

OH MY GOSH!! that thing looks horrrrrible!!
and notice the peice of cloth under it...they are trying to make that ugly peice of $!@# look sexy XD

I don't see screws, just pads :p
and those buttons above the keyboard... having one-button access to e-mail, firefox, and Explorer was amazing, after that moving the mouse to the start menu, or even the dock to click safari, is just too much work:eek:

and running hacked OS X on that beast was the most sexified thing I've ever seen:cool:

well i had these buttons in my earlier windows laptop, and it was PAIN to reach them..i find clicking on an icon in the dock in my mac much easier for my wrists
running OS X on a pc is lots of pain and will always have troubles when updating the software.

You know, I'm glad Jobs/Ives wasn't in charge of humans. We'd only have one eye for a start.

im not sure if this what you talking about, but i find that tapping with 2 fingers to get to the menu is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than pressing a button..before i got my mac i thought it was very stupid that theres only 1 button...but now i realize why its like that..wherever you press you know you are left clicking! and just tap with 2 fingers and you go to the menu..very creative and painless..:p

Thats better than eight eyes, four of which are hidden under plastic flaps.

I guess I don't have the practical experience to see the value in that.

I think this is hideous, looks proper 1970s shape, does it need to be clunky?

Just wait until you see that in real life. Circuit City used to always have those proudly displayed.

Jokes aside, I think there is definitely a gap at the very top of the market, an area that Apple isn't present, for a true desktop replacement luggable which isn't designed in a way intended to appeal to a nerdy 12 year old. I mean, these are the most powerful and expensive machines out there so why the heck aim them at spotty teens out of the style loop.

There's not a single machine in that segment which doesn't cause some gagging, the Qosmio included. And the new XPS M1730 seems to take ugliness into a whole new dimension. In absolutes the Sager NP5790 is a fairly ugly machine, but it actually looks attractive compared to the rest of the monstrosities out there.

There are others which could look fairly respectable in a sober way, except the nerdy 12 year old pops up somewhere and ruins it. I wish Alienware would lose the head out of the M9750.

I use the Dell gaming laptops for work as the software I run on them works perfectly well without OpenGL support and the gaming GPU's give me desktop-grade performance. But I do dispair at how freakin' ugly these generally tend to be, when they don't have to be. I'm in the market for something with an 8700m or an 8800m and the pickings are looking pretty slim in terms of style.
