When I eventually upgrade to a new Mac, I plan on bringing forward the Highpoint SSD7101a in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. Hopefully the mac pro aesthetics will help to make up for the drop in performance from PCIe 2.0 x16 to thunderbolt 3.

The PCIcard is cheap but looks good. It's a first step: my 2 x16 lanes are occupied with 2 GPU's, so no place for the time being for bigger card.

It will work nicely.

I used a SM951-AHCI installed into a Angelbird Wings PX1 for more than six months into Slot-3. It will be limited to 1500MB/s, but you already now this.

I'm contacting you because you seem to know what you're doing. (a shortage of these types these days)

(I really don't have the to read tech boards these days)

I purchased the highpoint ssd7101a and the samsung 970 evo in a 2 gig capacity.

I wish to perform a FRESH INSTALL of Sierra into the samsung 970. (not High Sierra or Mojave because I have too many apps which will not function)

Unfortunately I just haven't the time to read reams of info on this and some of the stuff I have seen seems overly complicated involving installing multiple third party software applications and many many step backing up ROMs and "injecting" code.



I have a mac pro from mid 2010 which has been upgraded to a 12 core 3.46ghz machine. It is currently on Sierra 10.12.6

Hi. There seems to be some conflicting reports, but I was wondering if I purchase a Samsung 970 Pro 1TB NVME with Lycom DT-120 adapter, will I be able to install the operating system from this SSD and be able to boot from it, without any issues when running the latest version of Mojave? Or are there still bugs or things that are required to make it compatible? I will be running a 2012 Mac Pro. Thanks.
 
Sorry Tsialex, I think I may have got it confused with another model that is not supported and my knowledge on this area isn’t great.

So just so I can be sure before purchasing, I would not have to do anything to the 970 Pro SSD other than install it along with the Lycom adapter, in order for it work in Mojave and be able to boot from it on a Mac Pro 2012?

Did you already upgraded your Mac Pro to BootROM 140.0.0.0.0? If not, you will need to, it's the first firmware to support NVMe native boot. You can read about it into the first posts of these two threads:
  1. MP5,1: What you have to do to upgrade to Mojave
  2. MP5,1: BootROM thread | 141.0.0.0.0
Btw, buy a PCIe M.2 adaptor that have a good heatsink, 970 Pro generates lots of heat and you will definitively need a adapter with a heatsink.

Thanks Tsialex. No I haven’t yet upgraded the BootROM, I wasn’t aware that was required, but thank you for mentioning. So just so I am understanding correctly, the NVME native boot support does not come automatically with the upgrade to latest Mojave? This will need to be done separately first in High Sierra, before upgrading to Mojave?

Thanks for the tip on the adaptor with a good heatsink. So I’m thinking the Angelbird PX1 PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter for PCIe M.2 might be a better option than the Lycom DT-120 adaptor?

If I want to do a FRESH install onto the 970 in a highpoint in my mac pro 2010 (which was hardware upgraded to a 12 core.) The existing boot rom is MP51.007F.B03.

will the 141 boot rom update work with what I am attempting to do and which is the easiest way to perform that boot rom upgrade?

Check your BootROM, SystemInformation / Hardware Overview/ BootROM version, if you upgraded before 10.14.1 you have 138.0.0.0.0. Only 140.0.0.0.0 supports NVMe boot.

Yes, no doubt. Aqua Computer kryo2 Evo is a good one too.
