What a waste of an ad campaign. The vast majority of PC gamers were never considering Mac for their gaming needs at all. So what is the point here?

To use the inevitable car analogy, this is kind of like Ford throwing shade at Ferrari's pickup truck lineup.

That's what I was thinking. Why target Apple rather than AMD? That's their direct competitor in the PC gaming space.
Exactly. And good analogy with Ferrari pickup trucks :)

Not for games, but there are other, very valid, use cases for wanting to be able to use NVIDIA graphics cards that a Mac just can't match. If Apple would get over their nonsense and bury the hatchet with NVIDIA so that there was at least eGPU support then that would open up whole new opportunities for Mac users in addition to and beyond gaming.
Out of curiosity, what are those cases?
Is it just a matter of raw performance, or does NVIDIA have some tricks that AMD can’t match?

Most Mac costumers already know it’s not a hard core gaming machine. As a console gamer it’s not a priority for me

But on a strange note, I have a new MBP 16-inch, 2019, and it has a noticeable lagging problem.

Just minutes ago, I started the Calculator app, entered two numbers, hit the '=' sign, and waited over 3 to 4 seconds for the answer. Like I freaked for a second wondering what was going on. It's usually almost instantaneous...

What is going on? Is this a known feature of this model? I've never had this happen with a MBP before.

Gaming on this? Not with the lagging like this... Nope...

To be honest, the inability to run PUBG is probably the biggest weakness of the Mac platform right now for me.

But with the M1 this is not really a technical limitation any more. It's just that developers aren't putting the effort into porting their titles to Metal & Apple Silicon. It's still a relatively niche platform. Hopefully this will change over time.
I can envision quite an attractive platform for game devs who want to target devices with "M1 or faster" as a requirement. In a few years this might be a huge market to develop for if you look at Macs and iOS devices.

The new M1 is sharing memory with the GPU and thus eGPU is unlikely as the latency would be to much transferring over the thunderbolt.
But Apple is emphasizing Metal and as more games are done with it, the Mac will become a better gaming computer in the future. They are also comparing agains the 16", which we may see the M1 version of after 2 weeks at WWDC.

Yes Apple really needs to step up their GPU game. The M1 seems ok as far as CPUs go, but the entire PACKAGE of the M1 Macs is where the problem lies - it's not just a chip vs chip comparison.

No, people don't buy Macs to JUST game on, but many people would love to play COMPUTER games on their Mac. How many people can afford to spend $1500-$2000 on a Mac to look pretty and do what their phone does, than another $1500 - $2000 for a gaming system that can do everything that beautiful iMac can? I realize some people throw out a few thousand every year for Apple upgrades, but that is not the norm for most Americans. I am willing to pay the Apple tax for a better machine, but it needs to be able to at least play the games - I don't expect Alienware levels of performance, just 60 fps or even just native support.

Computer Games are different than console games which are different from phone games (you guys have phones, right?). Computer games are not just about FPS, they cater to older gamers - even guys like me who have been gaming on computers since the 70s and Macs since the 80s.

Apples response should not be, if you wanna game, go to our competitors.

Played lots of games since Tangerine, but the usual caveat is inside a short period of time the built in gubbins are out distanced by some margin and the choice is limited, had some fun ones though. The outlay for a mac means I will not trade up just to play the latest game (if indeed it makes it to the mac). If I wanted dedicated gaming then a dedicated upgradable computer or a dedicated gaming box.
Top of the shop iMac was out of date/too low spec not long after I bought it, for up to date big budget games that is.
Interestingly running an acquired PC desktop all in one and I have more games options that I am interested running on that that my newer iMac will play (via Steam).

While announcing its latest chips yesterday, Intel launched another aggressive public attack on Mac devices, focusing on the experience of gaming (via PC Gamer).

Intel yesterday announced two new 11th Generation H-series laptop processors, featuring clock speeds up to 5GHz, Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E, and 1080p gameplay on popular titles, in high-volume, thin designs. Following the announcement, the company took the opportunity to launch another broadside against Apple.

In a press call with Intel's chief performance strategist Ryan Shrout about the new chips, Intel outlined an argument claiming that it is the supposedly poor gaming experience on Mac devices that makes Intel-based Windows devices superior. Intel derided Apple's M1 chip and boasted that most popular video games do not run on macOS.

The company highlighted a poor gaming experience on the Mac when using an emulator or virtual machine, showing a video of the game "Valheim" running poorly in Parallels on a Mac.

Intel further evidenced its claims with a chart showing an Intel-based 16-inch MacBook Pro, using a Core i9 9980HK processor with a AMD Radeon Pro 5600M, compared to a PC with a Core i5 11400H processor with a GeForce RTX 3060. The Intel-branded PC did better in each of the company's selected tests. This led to the claim that Intel-based PCs offer a "better gaming experience than 100% of Mac laptops."

The company then argued that there is a significant overlap between creators and gamers, suggesting that a large proportion of the Mac user base is not sufficiently accommodated for due to limited gaming options on their system.

Intel now appears to be making gaming a key buttress in its argument to persuade customers that its chips in Windows machines present a much better option for consumers than Macs with Apple silicon.

PC Gamer's Alan Dexter asked Shrout during the call if Intel was "burning its bridges with Apple." Shrout responded that "Apple has been very public about moving to its own silicon" and that "it is now a competitor," justifying the company's aggressive marketing campaign.

Since the debut of Apple's M1 chip, Intel has launched an aggressive marketing campaign to disparage Apple's custom silicon and commend its own processors, including highly selective benchmarks, a range of video ads, and a heavily biased website.

I don’t think intel is wrong

I bought a Mac once to synchronize with my iPhone and I’m somewhat of a gamer

Been running windows on my MacBook Pro Dota2 runs horribly

Now I feel trapped because lots of my photos are on the photos app, and I think it would be really cumbersome to extract them all and switch back to a pure Windows based system

Select all, Export (choice: Original, or not). Easy... Dump them into a new directory, put them on a hard drive, and suck them into whatever you use on the PeeCee...

If you don't waste time editing and/or selecting what to export, it shouldn't take too long. I've dumped 10 gigabyte Photos stores in minutes. YMMV...

I wouldn’t be surprised if Intel and other companies heavily invested in the Windows PC industry are actively financially incentivising game and software developers to halt, slow down or discourage portability onto Apple’s platforms. By means of disincentivising support and compatibility to straight out condemning development for MacOS as conditions for any partnership or sponsorship.

I suspect these type of ‘unofficial’ Windows-exclusivity agreements between developers and the industries’ big component producers have been going on decades now, and is a big reason behind the lack of Mac compatibility in games and software to date, not the inability of Apple’s chips or OS to actively run said software/games.

While a dollar invested in marketing for companies like Intel might be somewhat helpful in the short term, that same dollar would go much further being given in partnership with companies like Ubisoft, Activision, Adobe and so on in order for them to retain a Windows-Centric development culture.

I just wish people would stop blaming the supposed inadequacy of Apple’s hardware & Operating System and instead see that the big players in the Windows-dominated monopoly spend millions actively discouraging the development of Native MacOS software. To which they profit from 10x more than they would from advertising the qualities of their own products.

In matters of War, if you can not defeat your enemy outright, be sure to suffocate their growth and prosperity… and companies like Intel (despite previous “partnerships” with Apple) have severely (and maybe even illegally) inhibited Apple’s growth over the years with back room deals unbeknownst to the public, that protects the development of software for the hardware to which they sell.

PC is the only real place to play games. I don't know why anyone would buy a Mac for gaming. maybe some casual games if they get bored but you don't buy a Mac if you want to play games seriously.
And this is the result of their multi-decade anti-Apple suppression campaign. The only reason your statement is functionally correct is because the companies that dominate that market have used their billions in profit to actively discourage and siphon away developmental energy from Apple’s ecosystem, with great vehemence. And due to the sheer number of windows-centric devices that exist out in the wild, they experience very minimal resistance to getting developers to capitulate to exclusivity.

I doubt the average customer even knows what all of that means. People who want a new „MacBook“ will get a new MacBook, which just happens to use an „M1“ instead of „Intel“ chip now. I doubt pointing out the greatness of Intel will change their mind. In fact, they probably don’t even know what „M1“ is. That’s like saying the sauce of a Big Mac is so much better, doesn’t matter if I want a subway sandwich. „True gamers“ probably never would have chosen a MacBook, even with Intel, anyway

While it's true that Apple often tried to enter gaming and never succeeded, I want to see what's coming next regarding Apple Silicon + their rumored custom-made GPU. Maybe it will finally happen, after like 20 years?

Meanwhile, the M1's GPU competitor is Intel integrated graphics, only the M1 GPU is 4 times better. So if I were Intel, I would shut up.

Mac gaming wasn’t huge with Intel either. People were putting Windows on their Macs to get around it via Bootcamp or other means. If what Apple says is true about iOS apps (and games) running on macOS, then it has gained. I still wouldn’t play games on my Mac mini. It’s a tool for productivity for me, my game consoles and PC are for games.

As the Macsurfshop shirt used to say:
Macs for productivity
Linux for development
Windows for solitaire 🤣

Ah, the sounds of desperation. This should be music to Mac user’s ears. Maybe they could hire Long and Hodgman and reverser the roles.

Rule in PR, if you can't compete on even ground, baffle them with bull...

They do because they actually have games.
Meanwhile some M1 owners will have to jump through hoops of wrapping a windows game in crossover and hoping rosetta translates it properly to run.

To me it’s a tale of four Diablos.

Blizzard released I, II, and III on the Mac at the same time as the PC. But I haven’t seen any indication of intent to release IV (or even II Resurrected) on the Mac. The AAA ship has sailed, and it’s sailed away from Cupertino.

These days when I do have time to play a game I just use GeForce Now which has all the titles that I personally play.

I would enjoy seeing the Mac having high gaming performance - and acceptance of many primary titles. The m1 chip can do a lot and now it needs to do more. It would be awesome!

as a pro gamer reading this thread is so funny. gaming on a pc cannot be compared to the baby games and performance on a mac. macs have the worst peripherals there are. gaming keyboards and mouse drivers/performance suck for starters. so does thermal management on a mac. get a 144 hz monitor for 1080 or 1440p gaming at 144fps+ with corsair mouse/keyboard, a dual gpu/monitor streaming setup and the latest drivers and see how this works on a mac for less than 5k. or 10k. or 20k. etc. it‘s not possible. running games at non-native resolution always sucks. it will be 10 years from now until macs can run 5k games at 120+ fps natively on high. best for game developers would be to not port any games for the mac at all. imagine msfs2020 worked on a mac. incl. all peripherals. will not happen. apple is a closed system. pc gamers require access to every game, every peripheral, the latest beta drivers and full extensability for yearly gpu replacement and watercooled performance of course. macs provide the opposite: a crippled, closed, easy to look at and overpriced machine for some creative niches.
