Well - examples that I regularly encounter on a daily basis:
Phone is in a bag, out of reach.
Specific type of sports.
In a meeting.
Busy area so phone can't be heard in my pocket, but the Pebble vibration can be felt...

Why bother? If people can't see there's advantage to strapping the pocket watch to your wrist, especially when they think people who do find utility in the concept are idiots, I think you're wasting your time trying to convert them. You must have the patience of a saint.

This is such early days and people are already finding utility in strapping technology to their wrists (or more broadly utilising wearable technology). The future in this area is quite exciting, I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

I wear a watch all the time, I love wearing a watch, not because it's a fashion piece (what a pretentious reason to wear one), but because it provides a function that I (and many others who aren't so inclined to wear watches) appreciate. Add other functions to that device that I find useful and I'm there (as long as the device is not unwieldy to wear or use). Fun times ahead, despite what all the naysayers think.

So if a steel Pebble watch is $249, what would an Apple designed watch cost?

I am a little worried about that, because if this costs $249, and the Samsung costs $299, what does that mean for Apple?
Without knowing features, but knowing it will be worthy of a purchase, it's hard to imagine anything below $299. Maybe more?

I'd actually love one and would find it incredibly useful for when I am riding my motorcycle. Pulling out a phone to look at the clock or something is fairly impossible for me. If not impossible, a bit dangerous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this watch require a data connection from some other device, such as a smartphone? I think that was the reason tigres questioned the value of this watch. I mean what are you really getting? You can look at your wrist to see a tweet instead of pulling your phone out of your pocket? Thanks. I'll pass.

Exactly what I meant Mr_Ed, thank you.

In certain social circumstances, whipping out your cell is considered uncouth. A casual glance at a wrist (do these vibrate?) can quickly help you decide if you need to excuse yourself to take a call.

I personally have no desire for a smartwatch from Pebble, Samsung, Apple, or any other smartwatch vendor. But just because I have no desire doesn't mean someone else can't want one.

$250!!!!!!!!!!????????????!!!!That is way to much!!!!!!!!! If apple comes out with an iWatch witch I really want and am hoping for I would be happy to pay $100 but will pay up to $150. But $250 for a pebble?

Oh, I'm not trying to convert them, they won't be. And yes, its a waste of time.

Just explaining why I find the watch useful, though thats probably a complete waste of time falling on blind eyes. Hence I put YMMV.

I'm sure a few of the 'naysayers' will be all over the smart watch when Apple releases one.

Lots of fun for wearable devices, without a doubt.

Winter - Yes! Especially last Friday at -24c! I live in the same area.

I use a MetaWatch. It vibrates and shows notifications as they drop in. A quick glance on my wrist tells me whether I need to reach for my phone. I can keep the phone on silent, even turn off vibrations, and still not miss anything important.

"But you might as well simply look at your phone".

I could, but that increases the risk of dropping it, losing it, it's far less convenient, it requires much less - and it's so much less impolite to those around you.

I wouldn't say smart watches are "needed." But they are convenient. I work in an industry where I can't just look at my phone any time I want, but I can look at my watch and see if it's something that can wait or if I need to excuse myself to return a phone call.

Also while traipsing around Manhattan last month, it was nice to get Google Maps walking direction prompts on my watch. I didn't have to carry my phone around worrying about dropping it.

I also am more inclined to leave my phone in my pocket when out to dinner or in other social situations. It helps me to be more present in the moment with the people I'm with, without always grabbing my phone.

After having mine for 3 months, it's hard to imagine not having it.

How did you get google maps to display on your pebble? I can't get mine to work.

if you think $250 for a watch is crazy, you've clearly never bought a half decent time piece in your life.

iWatch is $999 now get ready and work harder.

Nothing to see here - Whenever Apple comes up with their own smartwatch and tells me that I need it, I'll buy it - until then, wearables are all futile talk.

I genuinely think they'll all fail based upon trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. It's like having a remote control for your car radio. The controls are there, right there!

Yeah, right there in my purse I left under the table but now I'm in the bathroom. or yeah, right there in my hand while I try to juggle my two roller bags at the airports OOPS just dropped my iPhone and broke the screen. Yeah, right there while I'm at the beach DAMN I forgot my phone isn't waterproof or doesn't like getting sand in it. yeah right there at the only outlet in the room recharging but I'm sitting way over here.

Improvement on the Pebble's aesthetics. But still too think and clunky for my taste. I love how they keep steamrolling along but hope they don't end up getting steam rolled when/if Apple shows a smart watch.

Definitely an improvement to the Samsung watch. The Samsung one, I wouldn't wear if you paid me. This one, I could wear without hiding my wrist. Not what I would buy, but I'd wear it if there was nothing else.

iPod Nano watch. That's the best looking idea so far.

The corners have to go though.

They also serve a different purpose and have (intentionally because they are jewelry) less functionality. Silly comparison. Smart Watches are not meant to be fashion or wealth statements.

Now a thought experiment: If instead of an all-singing-all-dancing smart watch Apple operated with a traditional watch maker and made a traditional watch with some very limited smartwatch additions - what would you add?

I didn't watch the video, but in the picture I can't even tell what the watch on the left is doing, and I can barely connect the dots and tell what time it is on the watch on the right (or in the middle in the picture with 3 watches). It makes my brain hurt. Don't think I need one of these, but that Jacob Jensen looks nice.

About 20% of those ridiculously large watch faces are dedicated to a static "Pebble" written in a ridiculously large type face. Gross.

I wish they'd offer either a discounted price to Kickstarter backers, or an opportunity to "upgrade", returning your old plastic watch. I'd prefer the metal one, but I don't want to spend $250 for a SECOND one.

----------

Ill be interested once they are waterproof.
I can keep my phone in my backpack

They are waterproof. To 5 atmospheres, which means you can do any normal day-to-day activity in them, including dunking your hand in the sink. They're just not rated for actual diving.

But it will survive falling into the sink/bathtub/toilet (ew) just fine. And definitely has no problem with washing hands/rain/etc.

This. This is the watch they should've first released! I had the original, and apart from pathcy BT connection to the iphone it was still a bit plasticy, so i sold it. If i hadn't just gone for a nice Casio Oceanus watch i'd be all over one of these new pebbles. They just need to release a titanium version :)

WTF are you talking about? You can chose any watch face you want. I don't have any references to pebble on my device.

Have you ever used a pebble?

Tack-a-holics' dream.

Didn't people abolish slavery... just to return to the manacles of time slapped on them to show they are still governed completely by another master. Watches are annoying, cumbersome, bygone fashion.
