Expecting something for nothing is exactly whats wrong with the world. Every one was in the same boat, every one had the same chance to either get/not get through. To expect apple to give you anything because YOU chose to spend you day clicking on a pre-order button is ridiculous.

I'm sure some of you will get pissy with what I just said but I don't give a hooties cow.

I want the phone just as bad as everybody else and was apparently one of the lucky ones to get through yesterday, but I wasn't about to go crying about it if I didn't get one. I was frustrated that it took me several hours to get one after several failed attempts as well, but crap happens. Deal with it. I have a hard time equating unexpected technical difficulties to bad customer service in this case. Here's an example. I work for a small startup that relies on Internet connectivity for customers to view our website and place orders online. Guess what? Today verizon unexpectedly shut off our connection by mistake and we are still waiting for it to come back on after speaking with customer service. In the meantime I can't respond to customer email, ship packages, or receive new orders. Does this mean we are providing subpar customer service? Should we be bending over and giving any customers who were "inconvenienced" discounts because they are just going to have to wait a few more hours to place an order, etc?

Sometimes indent know why people accept mediocrity
It's a phone.
No, It' a hundred more dollars than you have in your pocket right now...

Sometimes I really don't understand how so many people have such a sense of entitlement.

Sometimes i wonder why they don't stand up for themselves more often!

I don't understand your logic. So because our Internet service was out due to no fault of our own customers should feel entitled to request discounts or compensation? Maybe they should harass Verizon for screwing up and shutting off our access by mistake.

If we were talking about life and death here, or at least something more serious than a damn phone (or in my case aftermarket lighting solutions), then maybe I'd say there's some justification. I just get the impression you are willing to exploit someone (Apple in this case) for the time you spent unable to get something you want, and likely do not require, because you feel entitled.

You define what's wrong with America today.

Expecting freebies and handouts because of a little inconvenience.

Systems crash/bog down. IT'S A FACT OF LIFE. **** happens all the time. Servers crash, systems freeze, client/customers complain and bitch about it. At the end of the day, the company apologizes and works on resolving the issues to prevent it from happening in the future.

You seriously expect every single e-commerce site to give you a freebie if god forbid, you're logged into their site at the time and it bogs down.

Absolutely mind-boggling.

An e-commerce site? That's how you describe a major consumer based corporation! What are you 6 years old.

Obviously not very sophisticated and content with substandard mediocre products and service. Frankly, I'm rather surprised you purchase goods from this e-commerce company!

Look brother, all your ranting and raving, your insults and less than intelligent comments should have been directed at Apple, not here where you would have received like I did $100.00 for the ten minutes of your time.

Your feel you are not worthy of this gesture on their part, I hear that.

So bottom line is today I have exactly $100.00 more than you in my pocket because I felt my time was wasted and most definitely worth a small peace offering by the e-commerce site that had advertised extensively the availability of a new product on launch day.

As far as my defining what's wrong with america today, wow just another comment said in ignorance without anything to back it up. I've spent the last several days working 18 hours a day on the gulf crisis. What have you been up to?

If I define what's wrong with America today I would hate to think where your mentality of mediocrity fits in today.

Lets see, perhaps I would start with substandard equipment, and short cuts taken by companies and individuals in industries across the board despite being warned of the consequences of doing so.

I doubt you'll get the analogy, one would need the ability to look outside the limitations set before you, look at the bigger picture, the long term consequences of actions and plans taken and preparing contingencies.

For those people arguing that AT&T and Apple shouldn't upgrade their servers for one day are just plain silly. It's not just one day.

iPhone 3G: launch day was a huge clusterphuck. Everyone was up for an upgrade as the original iPhone was not subsidized. I got my phone home around 9:30 am after waiting for 6 hours. It took me another 6 to get it activated. My number was already ported so I had no phone. Then it was about impossible to download anything from the new App Store.

iPhone 3GS: launch day went fairly smooth. There were far less people upgrading due to no upgrade pricing, mostly new customers. App store was still unusable throughout the day

iPhone 4: Pre order madness! complete letdown. I tried and tried all day and was luck enough to get my order after trying for 12 hours. Almost everyone can upgrade.

iPhone 4 launch day prediction: clusterphuck of massive proportions. The servers will again be slizammed with people activating/buying phones, people trying to upgrade their current phones to iOS4, blah blah. And I am guessing this one will come in waves with every delivery day.

If Apple and AT&T want to have these huge hoopla launch days they need to build up to handle the pressure.

If they want to roll with the current server capacity they need to find a new way to roll out these products.

There's no way that anybody in their wildest dreams could have anticipated 10 times as many people pre-ordering than the 3GS. I was ticked on Tuesday when I spent 10 hours to get my order through, but when I heard about how many pre-orders there were, I was much more forgiving.

mmm just called customer relations and spoke with a supervisor complaining and asking for coupon.

she said not only do they not offer any coupons but then she said ALL preorders are not going to ship until july 14th. i called bs and said, uhm so what were you going to do with all the phones that were scheduled to ship on the 24th? and she said i don't know we're being told that all phones don't ship until then.

call again?

Yet you keep coming back for more...

i am guessing it is more like they felt $100 was worth spending just to get your self righteous, big mouthed, whiny new york accented voice off the phone ;).

just sayin'. I am almost to the point of giving you an additional $100 just to stop posting on these forums :p

I'll contribute to that fund.

How exactly was your time wasted?

Please enlighten us all and show us where AT&T/Apple advertised about the EXTENSIVE availability of product they would have on the pre-order day. Launch day is next Thursday, Pre-Order is what we had on Tuesday.

If you take your $100 and do something good with it, like donate it to charity, you might be a little less of a douche.

Ok. Let's put it this way.

You had difficulties placing your order. But since YOU wanted to get the phone on launch day, YOU decided to invest YOUR time (however long it took) to ensure YOU got what YOU wanted. And because YOU CHOSE to do this, you think ATT/APPLE should compensate you?

If they sent you a broke device. Or one that had a ding. Or a different color. Or something like that you'd be every bit entitled to some sort of compensation.

In the simplest terms - you demanded a discount on your iPhone for having to wait for the order to go through. Isn't that right? And a significant one at that. And unless I'm mistaken - you weren't happy with the first "offer" - you demanded a higher one.

Wow.

I find it a bit amusing that people are so bent for this coupon. From the sound of it, I'd think that Apple did something horrid to you or your family and giving them more money would be just silly. "I hate you guys so much for messing up my phone order. When can I give you more money?"

But really it's just appauling to read people trying more than once for these coupons. I am shocked that anyone would have the audacity to try it once, but to then continue calling and threatening to be meaner is just sick. Do you not realize that you are speaking to people that had nothing to do with why you aren't getting the phone exactly when you want it? And yet you feel the need to harass them.

And last I checked, AT&T and Apple were businesses run by people. Last I checked people make mistakes. They can underestimate demand. They can underestimate their servers. And stuff can happen. And because of the scale we should all nail them to the cross. Remember this the next time you make a mistake or underestimate your abilities. I am sure that you'll want people to be forgiving. But I hope they are just as forgiving as you pathetic people crying for a coupon.

BTW and I could be wrong about this. But the bigger "gripe" people have might not be what you did. But rather that you are encouraging people to do the same.

You scored a discount. Great for you. But as you were/should be an EXCEPTION. You're encouraging it to be a rule. Which will ultimately kill it for everyone.

When things like this happen - tell your friends. Don't go posting on a message board that people should do the same that you did. How would you like it if someone had raked YOU over the coals and got you to give them a break only to have them post it publicly and encourage everyone they knew to call you to harass you as well.

Just not cool. Enjoy your discount. No need to brag/encourage your behavior in others.

Not sure why everyone is getting all bent out of shape at the OP...he called as a frusterated customer that he was not able to pre order and Apple gave him a freebie.

Im all for the people saying "you dont deserve a coupon etc.." but who cares...if Apple is handing them out why does it matter? If I can get $100 just by calling and saying I was disappointed I wasnt able to order a phone that was advertised, then hell, sign me up. Except I wanted black anyway :)

I think the question to be answered is this:

How does somebody "working 18 hours a day in the Gulf cleaning up oil" have all day to try and get an iPhone 4 pre-order in?

I think it is telling that a lot of the people claiming these coupons are newbies.

Just sayin'.

This comes to mind reading this:

And last I checked, BP and Halliburton & TransOcean are businesses run by people, like Tony Hayward and Carl-Henric Svanberg. Last I checked people make mistakes. They can underestimate the need to use quality products and adhere strictly to rigorous safety protocols. They can underestimate their wells and what can happen as a result of a mistake. And stuff can happen. And because of the scale we should all nail them to the cross. Remember this the next time you make a mistake or underestimate your abilities. I am sure that you'll want people to be forgiving. But I hope they are just as forgiving as you pathetic small people are crying for compensation for your losses and way to make a living for generations to come.
