Well, it was time that I got the Apple Blues anyway. I bought my iMac last October. :(
i bought mine in aug. i'm glad they are updating them. now we can kinda go by intel's roadmap on when to expect a processor bump, and not this apple secrecy garbage.

I'm quite happy with my Day One Al 24" iMac, but I think the Mac Mini will serve me better then the :apple:tv so any improvement to it would be most-welcomed.

x2

Can you download HD rentals from iTunes with a computer yet? Or is it still a feature that is exclusive to the :apple:tv?

Not quite the case.

Mac Mini has i945G chipset with Intel GMA350. This chipset does NOT support Penryn and it's not pin compatible with i965G. (I'm talking about Northbridge pins)

So, Apple needs to design a new motherboard for the Mini to update it to Penryn.

X3500 upgrade would be better but I highly doubt it since not even Macbooks have this. I wonder why Apple is not using X3100 instead of X3500, since X3500 has hardware support for OpenGL 2.0.

Well... Montevina will have X4500 with full HD decode/encode and OpenGL 2.0. I guess they are just going to skip X3500.
You're not going to see the GMA X3500 on Intel's mobile platform.

Do the iMac's need to be slimmer? I mean I could see you slimming down the portables, they are mobile and can always be lighter, but an already anorexic desktop? Meh...

It makes them lighter, which makes them cheaper to ship, for one. They might look even more desirable too, which never hurts.

Now this is some good news at last :)

Updated Mac Mini with SR chipset with 4Gb RAM/GM-X3100 Graphics and cool but powerful Penryn.

Will get one the day it is out - I love my 1.66 CD Mac Mini but it is slow for today.

SR..yes.
4GB...yes (heck, why not 8GB?)
X3100...hell yess!
cool (as in temp AND Fonzie)....yep!
I want like 3 of these at less than today's current price for a Mini.

I don't really see how this is that great of a rumor. Most signs point to this. I can just as easily tell you that a new iMac will be out within a month of Tuesdays. For an extra dollar I will promise you with 110% accuracy that one will be out within a 6 month time frame.

Even if new iMacs are released next Tuesday, I'm not giving any street cred to this site.

Isn't it GMAX3100?

Good catch.

I really, really want some mini updates. I kinda miss my old one, and one with Penryn would be freakin' sweet. And, like, a price drop. Mini heaven.

Oh, and if they were to redesign it a bit as well... Glossy.... :)

The Apple studio displays aren't LED backlit are they? I only ask in this thread because of the mac mini connection.

Studio displays? No. Neither are the current Cinema displays, which I think you mean. But they still have a better color gambit than any Apple portable with an LED screen.

Apple may be waiting to upgrade the Cinema Displays to Backlit when they do the iMacs—that way they could bulk-order more larger displays and get a better price. We may see the 23" replaced by a 24", and a new 30" backlit.

It's logical that the iMac and Mac mini get updated a few weeks AFTER the portable updates.

Logical?

The last Mac mini update was August 2007.

The Mac mini update before that was September 2006.

Wouldn't it be more logical that Mac mini updates are only in the fall?

I was completely happy with my 27" Sony Trinitron. I imagine they should have never pushed technology to make newer TV's slimmer.

See how that logic doesn't quite work?

That's totally different. The thick TVs worked fine and the thin TVs worked fine.

The Mac Mini, on the other hand, has slow hard drives. Why? So they could make them smaller than other computers. Ok, fine. They had to do that at the time. Now, years later they're coming out with fast hard drives that can fit in the Mini. Is Apple going to start putting them in the Mini? Maybe. Or maybe they'll just shrink it again and keep using the slow drives.

THAT's the question here. Does the mini need to be smaller at the EXPENSE of performace?

Your TV didn't start working slower when it got thinner, so the comparison is pointless.

Would you please find me a notebook chipset that uses the GMA3100?

My original post on the GM965 is still valid.

I'm not disputing that. I'm only saying that the article specifically says GMA3100, not GMAX3100. It is also contradictory, since it says GMA3100 and Santa Rosa used in the MacBooks. Something is incorrect, and I suspect it's the GMA3100.

Hello, Macrumors.

I recently (I mean, really recently) purchased a new iMac 24" with standard options (I'm not sure if Applecare counts as customization, if it does I'm screwed). What I want to know is: can someone direct me to Apple's policy on the matter of exchanging for a newer product. The computer is supposed to arrive next week, so if Apple updates the line, does that mean I'm screwed? I'd really appreciate any help on the matter.

Cheers,
Kenny
You're golden if the box hasn't been opened and you're within 14 days of purchase. Just call Apple and they'll exchange it, no problem.

If it's open, you might have to pay a 10% restocking fee. But either way, it has to be within those first two weeks.

the iMac could really use:
1- upgradable graphics card (even if it is a small one, the basic chip used in imac stinks or is lower range)
2- Blu-Ray (instead of having a superdrive, add a Superdrive that can read Blu-Ray)

Hate to disappoint you but there is no way Blu-ray is going to find its way into a Mac before 2009. First of all there are practical reasons - expense, not a fully adopted standard etc, and it would mean a major case redesign in any Mac it was going to go in. That's not going to happen for a long while yet. If you are cynical you could add that Apple are not going to put Blu-ray in their machines at a time when they are looking to kickstart film rentals through iTunes, but in reality Apple are looking to the future and that is delivering digital content through downloads not a round piece of plastic.
