I'm not disputing that. I'm only saying that the article specifically says GMA3100, not GMAX3100. It is also contradictory, since it says GMA3100 and Santa Rosa used in the MacBooks. Something is incorrect, and I suspect it's the GMA3100.
I'm glad we came to a consensus on that. I suspect that the writer of the MacScoop article needs to did do a little more research. ;)

i'm just glad this indicates the mini will live. i don't own one but definitely see the use and place for it in the apple line up and it would be a shame if it died off. good on ya, apple!

Great timing

to upgrade the low-end Mac models!

I downloaded the iPhone SDK today and found out that my three PowerPC-based Macs don't make the grade! While they are not the latest and greatest, they are still performing most of the tasks my family and I require admirably.

I wonder how many iPhone developer wannabes are thinking about finally diving into the Intel-based Mac world as cheaply as possible. Maybe I'm the only one :)

I sure hope the rumor proves true sooner rather than later. I'm just a-twitter over the iPhone SDK and waiting, as Tom Petty says, is the hardest part.

I don't really see how this is that great of a rumor. Most signs point to this. I can just as easily tell you that a new iMac will be out within a month of Tuesdays. For an extra doller I will promise you with 110% accuracy that one will be out within a 6 month time frame.

Even if new iMacs are released next Tuesday, I'm not giving any street cred to this site.

Signs may have pointed to an iMac bump, but the mini's future was far less clear.

Mac Mini upgrade would be great

Imac is nice, and upgrades are always welcome.

The Mac Mini needs it, though.

Faster processor
More RAM memory capacity if at all possible.
The X3500 Video system suggestion with HD quality sounds FANTASTIC.
Wireless N for compatibility with AppleTV, but most importantly Time Capsule. Gigabit Ethernet should be a no-brainer, c'mon Apple.
BluRay laptop-style drive would be great, with full hardware compatibility to play BluRay media in HD format natively.

I think it could make a great headless alternative to an iMac, but even more, a FANTASTIC little option for a Home Theater controller, with FrontRow controls, EyeTV tuning/DVR capabilities to an attached external or networked storage drive, Griffin SharkFin radio tuner, and optical multi-channel output to an amplifier, and HDTV video output, even if converted to HDMI via DVI port.

Possibly even with an internal SSD running the operating system, with an external or networked large-capacity HD-drive or RAID array via USB, or preferably FW800, that could be a fairly high-value little system, and probably less expensive than an overkill Mac Pro, or a too-consolidated iMac.

That could get rid of my DVD player, receiver, and HD tuner/DVR, and other Home Theater components. That is the problem with AppleTV, it is ANOTHER source in the stack, it doesn't replace the stack, or parts of it.

Now if only something like the Simplifi ADAT 7075A Home Theater PC Amplifier would work with the Mac Mini's toslink optical output, and USB control software was compatible with Mac OS/FrontRow... (That HTPC amp has only a toslink optical digital audio input, USB control input from Home Theater PC, including system volume, and 5.1 channel speaker outputs. They also have USB-only input, where the audio stream is carried over the USB bus, sans toslink.) Or an even better single-source 5.1 amplifier with digital input.

That and a nice LCD HDTV monitor for video display, and my NHT 5.1 loudspeakers that are already in place. Then I would be in business. This is the system I want to build by Feb 19, 2009, when analog broadcast ends, and digital HD monitors come down in price due to market adoption around and after next christmas.

But so far the parts won't exactly work seamlessly, unfortunately.

But the reports I hear about the penryn-based machines may make this Mac Mini rumored upgrade very interesting to pay attention to.

Here's hoping the get rid of the glare-o-matic glossy screen and give a proper matte anti-glare screen. That had stopped me from buying the iMac late last year.

slim the imac? why?! we just need those LED backlights

Having and LED backlit screen along with a slimmer iMac only equals one thing, eco-friendly :apple: which also equals profit$ as less packaging, shipping weight and dollar more packages per shipment and the list goes on.

a slimmer iMac would be welcomed along with a slimmer Mac Mini, I say :apple: should phase out the :apple:TV, it just does not make sense when the Mac Mini can do so much more.

Now if the Mac Mini can drive a 30" ACD I will buy one ASAP. :D

What is the big-deal with people wanting blu-ray so bad on their macs?

Is like a cycle with mac stuff. People request, if apple releases it then those same people whinning about it start complaining about the price and how much cheaper it is in windows world.

So annoying.

Have you guys rented or seen an hd movie from the apple store?
I have a windows laptop with a blu-ray drive i did a comparison between the two on the laptops lcd and the diffrence between the 2 was very little.
Clarity on both and regarding sound it will not change because apples audio hardware is not even HD yet.

Just like when people were saying come on apple release AN SSD option and when they finally did "TOO EXPENSIVE FOR ME"

How annoying it would be to burn a 50gb drive @ 1-2x.

iPhone SDK

I"m with you still have a dual processor G5 and a 12" PB but I might have to get a intel just for the sdk. I've been waiting for a MAC tablet which I expect RSN and think the SDK is what it will take to get a real tablet.

Updated Mac Mini with SR chipset with 4Gb RAM/GM-X3100 Graphics and cool but powerful Penryn.
That would all be well and good if there weren't rumors indicating that the chips for the Napa platform (Calistoga chips) will be completely phased out by the end of the 2nd quarter of 2008, and the Santa Rosa platform (Crestline chips) will be completely phased out be the end of the 4th quarter of 2008, all in favor of the new Montevina platform (Cantiga chips) due in June.

If Apple updates the Mini to use the Crestline chips from the Santa Rosa platform, then expect another refresh or demise of the Mini before the end of 2008 once Intel withdraws its Crestline chips from the market.

I guess, alternately, Apple could use northbridge and southbridge chips from someone other than Intel. Or they could wait until there are Cantiga chips available this June.

Won't see it. Even if you did, it doesn't have hardware H.264 decoding, Apple's de-facto compression algorithm.

BluRay laptop-style drive would be great, with full hardware compatibility to play BluRay media in HD format natively.

Doubt that'll happen, either, considering Apple's business model.

I will say this one time only: The iMac is the best computer pound for pound at any price point. Lock this thread, enough said.

What a childish way to make a point.

Doesn't support his claim and wants to close the thread before anyone can dispute it. Nice.

Blu-Ray's not just about watching movies, it's about 50-or-so GB of data burnt to a disk. That's pretty awesome, and perhaps Apple wants to get people hooked on Time Machine/Capsule as a method of backing up rather than people burning 50GB Blu-Rays disks. That said, there's a market on the Pro machines for authoring Blu-ray content, so that's where it would likely happen first.

Apple have acknowledged being very late to the game with standardized CD-burners, so my guess is they're making sure they get Blu-ray absolutely right, like they mostly have with DVD-burning.

Wasn't the macbook forcefully updated by Intel more then anything I read, because they wanted to use new processes? Well iMac and Mac Mini use the same processes, so this has got to be true?

But wait, wouldn't this just be a stop-gap upgrade like people are saying it was for the MB and MBP? And that in June there will be a new release when Intel heavy hands it?
