this is interesting, I wonder just what a thinner iMac would look like. It's pretty dang thin already!

A mini update? Seriously? Will this be a real one, or a non-update like the last couple that will still leave it a turd compared with similar boxes?

Milo, milo, milo... I was wondering how long it'd be before you showed up to bad mouth the Mini.

4 ram slots, preferably up to 8 gigs available.

It's going to be the MacBook packaged into either its current ff or the ATV/TM ff. That means it would be able to take 8 gigs (unless Apple disables it).

Better integrated graphics, with hardware acceleration for h.264.

Better IG, yes; on-board H.264 en/decoding, no.

Unfortunately, the case size llimits hard drives to small slow ones, it was a boneheaded move to make it too small to handle a 3.5 inch drive.

Yeah, I'd like to see this - SATA 3 gbps instead of 1.5.

The mini has had gigabit ethernet since the first intel units, maybe longer.

No, it came with the C2D. {edit - apparently it did come with the Intel CS/CD}

Components should be the same yes, but the shape is very important, too. It's thermal management should be good, PCB design is not as easy as it sounds.

Hopefully with using Penryns, the thermal management would have somewhat lower demands than the current Mac Mini.

Updates are always nice, if Apple does indeed update the Mac Mini, I can see them making the case design more similar to the Apple TV, maybe shrinking it down so it's not as tall. However doing so may make the machine get too warm, so I don't expect them for the machine to get too big of a re-design, if at all. :)

As for the iMac I don't know how much thinner they can make it really, maybe that'll come in the future, or it'll be by a very small amount. ;)

I was completely happy with my 27" Sony Trinitron. I imagine they should have never pushed technology to make newer TV's slimmer.

See how that logic doesn't quite work?

It's not applicable. What did you give up with that move? What was the trade-off that the slimmer TVs introduced to achieve that slimmer form factor? Many consider the parts in an iMac and Mini to be underpowered and outdated for the price. Apple needs to concentrate less on fitting things into a smaller case and just making them live up to their price.

I couldn't do the apple logo!

Do the iMac's need to be slimmer? I mean I could see you slimming down the portables, they are mobile and can always be lighter, but an already anorexic desktop? Meh...

i have to agree, that would be nice. but i have to say i think their energies could be put to better use elsewhere. Besides I have the low end current model and it runs like a dream, really. So smooth.

I really want a Mini, but I would love it if it got better integrated graphics, WiFi-N and GigE. I don't actually care if it got a updated CPU or a smaller form factor.

EVP

The mini already has GigE. From Apple's website: "Built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45 connector)"

Prediction for the Mini

OK, I'm gonna predict what the Mini's successor will be. The new top-end Mini will be:

2.4GHz C2D Penryn
up to 4GB RAM
120GB-250GB SATA1 5400 2.5"
Combo or Super Drive
GMAX3100 w/144MB DDR2 SDRAM (shared with main memory)
DVI out
802.11n
Gigabit Ethernet
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
4 USB 2.0 ports
1 FW400 port

Unfortunately, I'm guessing the prices won't change much. But, if that's what they come out with, I'm getting one. I'll get the base-line SuperDrive model, make sure it's not DOA, and then upgrade the HDD and RAM myself (cheaper). It's not hard if you've done it before and don't care about warranty/AppleCare. Plug in an eyeTV Hybrid and drop this sucker in my living room. Hell yeah.

Its good to hear about the mini, its exciting! For some reason I think they'll be doing more to the mini, but it could just be random thoughts. I like the iMacs as is right now, so having it even thinner would be interesting.

I don't know why people want Blu-ray.

Unless you have the 24inch you need 1080p resolution 1900x1200 (I think) to even display the blu-ray content.

Fine, then don't get it but, don't rag others who want to have it. Geez. Stop apologizing for apples unwillingness to provide it's customers with what they want.

Wrong. Sony laptops have had Blu-ray for at least a year that did 1080p on beautiful 17" screens. I sold lots of them.

Believe....

Do you know how sweet an Penryn Mini with GMA3100 would be?
I just hope they keep the price the same (or drop it)!

I seriously doubt they would ever drop the price, but considering its current hardware specs...the Mini is seriously overpriced.

I have been wanting a mini for some time now but have held back initially due to its rumored demise. Then it just seemed like the mini lagged so far behind the other products that it just wasn't worth it. If there is real update I would definitely buy one as a home entertainment device.

My wish: dual-link DVI on the new iMac and Mac Mini to drive a 30" display. A wish, a hope, but knowing Apple they will still want you to buy a Mac Pro to have desktop machine that can drive the displa. Using my MacBook Pro as is, is the only way I can drive my 30" Cinema HD right now, and I would like the advantage of a dedicated desktop machine to drive the display. $2000+ price for the tower is too much for me, right now
