Obviously it makes business sense for Apple to see what's in stock before introducing an updated version. I would assume that once the update comes out, the current models will be considered "previous generation" and will sell at a deeper discount than 17-18%. That's what I'm waiting for. If the update isn't that grand, I'll just get a deeper discount on a current model. I guess there's the risk that they'll sell out of the current generation, but I'll take my chances.

My opininon: No update this week. :(

Dude you're killing me with well thought-out logic :(

Sorry for being a negative nancy. :) Actually, my logic is wrong. The non-Penryn MacBook and MBP are not considered "previous generation", but they are at a deeper discount (24-25%) than the current refurb iMacs (17-18%). I would imagine the discount on the iMac will increase with an update.

Also, I don't know if I buy the idea that the refurbs could be new machines. It would be unethical for Apple to charge different prices for the same machine. If Apple is trying to blow out iMacs, everyone should receive the same discount. However, I do wonder about the seemingly large number of refurbed iMacs. Hmmm...

It's a tough update for Apple. If they do have a large inventory of iMacs, they are obviously going to lose margin when they're discounted. In addition, the update is not an overhaul, so it's not going to attract the average consumer. If it was a brand new model with lots of new bells and whistles, Apple could count on new sales to make up the difference in margin. However, I don't believe the average consumer cares which Intel chip they're buying. All that said, with the MacBook and MBP update and the possible pressure from Intel, Apple can't wait forever to update the iMac.

Can anyone describe the performance difference between these two processors?

Not a lot of difference. Check out this link it describes the difference between the two. The average improvement is 4.5%. You will not notice that in normal use.

I just returned the referb 24" I bought a week ago because it was Dead on Arrival, so if you are thinking about referbs there be a few problems. Mine would not even power up the fans or monitor. The box that it came in was not a normal Mac box it had referb clearly marked on it. So if they are selling the now ones as referbs they are switching the boxes as well.

I am going to see what the new line has to offer, I decided not going to give up after one bad expierence.

Assuming there's a graphics upgrade I'm getting one.

There's some possibility that this might only come in the form of a build to order option. Are BTO Macs available at the Apple Stores (and other retailers like Best Buy) or are they really built to order and need to either be ordered online or ordered in advance at a store?

I'm doubting that's the case but if so it will save me a trip on Tue.

i wouldn't get your hopes up if i were you, this thread was started 13 days ago.

Believe me, I want this release more then you do, why can't they just release it already???:confused:

Yee-haw!!! Yep, they are updating the store right now..... I am excited not so much for myself but for a friend who is ready to buy her first Mac....an iMac. We're hoping that by waiting a couple of days she'll be getting an even better iMac than she would've if she'd bought one today.....

Yeah, I just went over there to check some prices and I saw my first "We're down" notice. I got so excited I almost wet myself.

And I don't even own my first Mac yet. :D

I know I'm probably shooting my wad here, but,
I do hope they add something new to the MacBook Air

ANYTHING

It'll make my decision to buy one next week so much easier!

Sorry but that is absolutely not going to happen. It is a brand new machine, give it at least 6 months for anything.

Hey, it's probably not going to happen.
But it's not absolutely impossible.

I dare you to say the same thing to the early iPhone adopters
=P

Psh, no one likes Henderson anyways!
:p

*joke*

Watch it Tahoe ;-)

I would be shocked if any Macbook Air changes are made tonight/tomorrow. My feeing is that this has to do with he iMac and especially the Mini.

some people believe the online store being down currently is only due to maintenance since it went down early... but i'm all whatever on that! it's early tuesday morning! we need some new iMacs please!!

honestly, if the store is down just for maintenance and the iMac isn't updated i'll be so pissed...

yes same here, I have been wanting a mac for the past 3 months (in retrospect it has been over 2 years) and now I am just waiting for this last release.

Think about it, what could be left?

They updated all the iPods besides the Classic, they updated the Mac Pro, notebooks. The only thing that they haven't done is iMac, mini, and displays.

in the past, how long has the store been down for when a product is updated? I just have never anticipated a launch like this, therefore haven't clicked refresh every 5 minutes

this is better than clicking refresh ever 5 minutes... attached is a small .HTML file (zipped) that auto refreshes the online Apple Store (US) every 5 seconds for Safari... just download it, unzip it, launch it, and keep the window open small where you can see it still behind your main Safari browser.

thanks for the thought! currently on someone else's computer and don't want to download anything on it, suppose its back to the old fashioned way

i hope the ...

iMacs get the Penryn Chip.... but I do not hope the mac mini's do... I think we will have a new desktop..... They can call it the...... Mac Light or something cool!

Although the US store is down, other international stores are still up (I checked UK and Japan).

I think they normally all go down at the same time for major product updates - they certainly did last week for the MB/MBP updtes.

I guess this is just routine overnight maintenance to the store at the moment. Hopefully the updates will come later in the day.

did you also notice in the Japan, Australia, Netherlands, Denmark, Hong Kong stores that there are no more "limited time specials" on the current generation iMacs? and that the UK and France stores only have some 20" models, and the Italian store only has the high end 2.8 Core 2 Extreme model left?

'cause i did... :p

i think now they're doing both maintenance and update since the north american stores have been down for 5 hours now... i'm expecting all the stores to go down soon with new iMacs in the morning...
