I'm looking for a site that has a numbering system that compares all of the past mac systems. Ive done a search and have had no luck...

Does anyone know it?

I'm using a DP 2.5Ghz Powermac with 1.25 FSB and I'm looking to get the 20" 2.4Ghz iMac which has an 800Mhz system FSB. What speed difference will I see from the iMac. Faster/slower... the same? Anyone else make a similaar switch?

Thanks
Chris

I have finished waiting as well. This will be my first mac of my own, I finally buckled because I absolutely need it for school as I currently do not have a computer. So I ordered a new 2.8GHz 24" and it will arive at my front door, tomorrow!

I just couldnt wait any longer for a processor upgrade and MAYBE a gpu upgrade

I really dont understand people like this. ( if "X"Mac doesnt come out by "Y"Date I will have to go buy a PC....

MOST mac updates are small speed bumps. Especially this iMac update since they just introduced the new Aluminum case. We know it will have the new Penryn chip in it. Maybe a new graphics card... probably the same HD for the base systems. Maybe 2GB ram for the base system.

WHat I'm getting at is the the performance wont be that different and I'll bet it isnt noticeable to a user. A current iMac is a great machine.

The last item I bought from Apple was a Macbook pro. Couple of weeks later they updated it - small updates yes, but the mid range I bought became the low end model with a larger hard drive and the price difference was almost $1000 - I needed extra HD space but didnt upgrade because the midrange was so dear. I need a new computer in the next couple of weeks. If I go and buy the one I want I can guarantee I will be burnt again and could have saved myself alot of money. I am sure you can understand my disappointment - perhaps you cant but I dont have money to throw away and would like to save where I can. I can get a well specd PC for a reasonable price but would prefer iMac. If nothing happens with them in the next week or so Ill just get whats cheaper. If they do change them I can guarantee there will be a decent price difference and Im not going to take the risk again. Im still bitter over my last experience and swore Id never buy another Apple but realistically I prefer them, but Im still not into feeling ripped off, Its not the small spec changes that concern me its the difference in price when they update.

Ahhhh... Now I see what you are talking about. I understand your point and offer my apologies. Especially in this economy we all need to make sure our money goes as far as it can. Apple gear isnt cheap and there are other options out there. I feel that whatever money is saved buying a PC is lost in 2 major areas. 1.) User experience - OS-X is far superior to any Windows system & 2.) Depreciation of equipment - I currently have a PowerMac system I bought new for 3600 bucks. that system is 3.5 years old right now. I know and I will be selling this system for somewhere between 1200 and 1500 dollars. I don't know how many 3.5 year old PC computers can pull in that kind of money. I dont know what an current iMac will go for 3 years from now but I know it will still be a great system.

Goodluck with your decision. I too am waiting for the update. But if I get to impatient with :apple: I will end up getting the 20" 2.4Ghz Refurb (+ Applecare)

Got fed up with waiting!! Managed to blag an amazing deal. Brand new, not refurbished 24" 2.4 iMac with 4gb RAM for insanely low price, cheaper than an Apple refurb.

Like the man said, I can't see major changes ahead, and Penryn will offer a very modest processor update. 320gb is more than enough. Already maxed out RAM. Only thing I would have wanted is Video to be 512 but hey, you can't have everything.

PS - The screen is huge, love it!!!!!!

I love the title of this thread. It is like the crab shacks around here that have "Free Crab Tomorrow" painted on the building. This is good for eternity :)

Hey any 411 on this amazing deal of yours? I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 24"iMac and I was planning on going refurb. but if you can help a brotha out please do!:D

Penryn is better for mobile platforms right? I mean, the improved battery is geared for portable users and the 3mb cache is a downer from SR.

So my question is this: why not just wait til Montevina (sp?) for the iMac, which is always connected to an outlet; it'll be truly faster and more powerful?

I for one hope that Penryn stays away from the iMac in favor of getting a Montevina model before June.

Montevina is a platform that will run Penryn processors.

... that will run new, faster, "penryn" processors, but not the same as the ones in the current MB/MBP. Montevina cpus and chipsets will start being available in june.

I would also love to know where I can find a new 24", 2.4GHz iMac with 4GB RAM for less than a refurb.

I don't think an update is imminent, which is good and bad in my mind. The bad is that I'm ready to sell my eMac and enter the world of the iMac. The good is that the longer we wait, the more I'm convinced we'll see bigger and better changes, much more than just a Penryn update. The reason I'm somewhat pessimistic about an update soon is that Apple has a ton of iMacs in the refurb section, and regardless of whether they are refurbs or they're clearing inventory, they have plenty of product to move. The more product Apple moves now = less product they have to discount more after the update.

Can anyone who's purchased a refurb recently verify that they were sent a refurb and not a new machine?

Next Tuesday?

As some character actor has said numerous times in the movies, "I could tell you stories that would curl your toes......" but if I worried about what comes out "Next Tuesday" I would still be using a Commodore 64 or whatever I had before that.

Look around, study, hope, and buy what you think is the best deal today after you ask yourself, "Will it do what I want until I can get a newer one. It is a gamble but if you can't bring yourself to answer that one honestly, don't buy anythiing and stop complaining.

Riley

PS, I HAVE been there!:)

It'd be cool if they'd slap a quad in the high end model.

well apple always get the good stuff first from intel I.E silverthorne in mba apple had it a month or two before the cpu was release to market. intel has scheduled to release a mobile quad core in q2-q3 and i wouldnt be suprised if apple gets a new speedy cpu first in this revision :apple:

I got it on eBay, in the UK - was a fantastic price, and I upgraded the RAM myself with 4gb I got from eBay too. It worked out slightly less than a 2.4Ghz 24" with only 1gb.

It is definitely brand new too! The screen is so big and lush. I can see what people mean about reflection and glare, but I think it is the way you position the lamp in your room. Colours are glorious and it simply flies. So quiet too - except when the DVD drive is doing stuff occasionally, but that is something I can live with.

All in all couldn't be happier!!

So if the new iMacs aren't here tomorrow and instead we see a mac mini bump, how real is the potential of quad core iMacs? Seems like the original release most of the systems where on par with each other spec wise and Apple has slowly been spreading the line out int he past two years.

A quad-core iMac cannot happen until Intel releases a mobile QuadCore CPU, which is not expected until later this year.

When it does happen, Apple will likely offer it as a BTO option for the iMac and the MacBook Pro, but it will likely command a serious premium because AMD won't have anything like it so Intel can charge $1000+ for it.

Very well put. :)

I am not sure if you are familiar with utility curves, but yours must be fairly steep. I am surprised by your comments in all honesty because:

1) You were happy with your mac before the update, how did it change?

2) You knew that Apple updates their products from time to time and could have waited, if the money meant so much to you.

3) The increase in VRAM doesn't make much of a difference (especially with regard to games), and you will always get to a point where you need more HD space.

Instead of reacting emotionally, why not learn from your mistake, and/or thank God that this disappointment in your life came from a perceived loss of money on very expensive, high tech electronics. I know plenty of people who would be ecstatic with a Powerbook from 2004. If you honestly need a computer within the next couple of weeks (like if it would be critical to your business survival, or for emergency service programs) then the current iMac will give you great performance for years to come. If you want to get the best value, then wait until they are updated, then wait 2 weeks for reviews and any potential bugs to be found by other people, then buy your iMac and don't look back. Otherwise, you will be 'stung', sooner or later again.

In Jesus Christ,

GB,

I am learning from my mistake and not buying on before they update this time. If I were rolling in it I wouldnt have cared about the huge savings but right now I cannot afford to be ripped off by that much in such a short time. Thats my choice and my opinion. Yours may differ and thats ok, Im not going to attack you for it as you have me.
But I need a new computer very soon. Im not going to buy an iMac now and then find out in a couple of weeks I could have again saved a large sum. I would prefer to get something else. If they do update then Ill be happy to buy knowing Im not going to hand over more money than is necessary because by the time they update *again* I will have had it for months. With the one I bought had I bought it months before I wouldnt have been bothered by it. But the few week old macbook I had when the new one was released was then worth just over half what I paid a few weeks before because of the update. I think you are misreading my post in that I didnt ever want it to be updated because I will be out of pocket. Its not that at all its that within just a few weeks I could have saved SO much. I had a white macbook before this that by the time I sold it I could have saved $500 on over the whole year and there were a couple of updates through the year, nothing outrageous though and it didnt bother me, this is the first time I saw anything so drastic and I happened to be caught by it so I am not impressed and it has lost me the excitement of my new pro, I had wanted one for so long and finally did it only for this to happen, I barely use it anymore because the whole experience annoys me but to sell it is like giving it away so I need to keep it at least for a year (plus one of the keys is cracked already and nothing has happened to it, had to have a key replaced within a few months on my macbook too so quality is bugging me right now also.) Its my choice what I do and why I am doing it and if it doesnt make sense to you thats ok, you dont need to have anything to do with it I was just stating that I was only going to wait one more week before I make my decision and due to my last experience which I - as you put it - have learned from Im not going to make the mistake twice. :)
