We i got my 20" 2.4ghz iMac delivered yesterday, this is a refurb one and as far as i can tell you would think it was brand new, it is mint. It was meant to come with the 320gb HD however on further investigation it has come with a 500gb :D

Just got to figure out how to keep it connecting to my wireless router now, coming from a PC but i will get there.

It seems a theme is emerging. The Intel/Apple relationship is such that Intel can push Apple to more aggressively adopt their new processors. I firmly believe this same 'weekly update' behavior will occur after WWDC; Montevina across the board every week for a month.

Good old Motorola never pushed Apple that way. Neither did IBM. :p

FuriousD,

How long did your refurb take to be delivered?

Congrats on your new Mac. They do seem to do quite a good job with their refurbished products.

Ideally, there shouldn't be any problems getting the iMac to connect to a wireless router. When I got my Mac mini last year, it's wireless card was able to find my wireless D-Link router and connect up to it. Amount of network configuration: Zero.

Question for everyone.

As people might realize, apple did not realize a new product or update this tuesday. Looking at the continuous product release each week, we can easily identify the SDK as a new product for this week. Now for the question...

Can anyone agree with me that the iMac could possibly be updated next tuesday? I could be wrong but it could be possible to have not only a speed bump but something else since the "Buyer's Guide" predicts an update soon. The Macbook Pro received a speed-bump and a led screen/multi-touch update because it was basically due for one. The Macbook only received the speed-bump because it was just not due for an update till around April or possibly June.

Does anyone have any opinions on my saying?

Jman there is no doubt that it's the iMac's turn next week. but what will get updated is anyone's guess. i think the only certainties are penryn processors and 2 gig RAM as default. if there was any slight improvement in the GPU i'd be happy too. wanting too much will only lead to disappointment.

I find it so funny that these ....Next Tuesday... threads will always be relevant since there will alway be a next Tuesday :D

i'm very much inline to buy the next iMac update... but something tells me we won't see it for a little while longer. i'm actually anticipating the next update to also see an update to the Mighty Mouse, since it too is well due for an update... hopefully one where the scroll ball is at least removable for cleaning... would be amazing if the next iMac update coincided with a brand new Mighty Mouse.

A similar thing happened to me and my refurb MBP last year. Two GB RAM shipped when I ordered one with 1GB. Gotta love it when that happens.

Referb 24" Mac Dead on arrival.

I also received a referb yesterday, it was my first ever mac. I wanted to teach my daughter about setting up a computer, I think I scarred her for life. Got everything out of the box and explained what everything was, plugged everything in presser the power button and ....... three short beeps, three long beeps, three short beeps. For the non geeks out there that is Morris code for SOS. The referb was Dead on arrival and it was telling me SOS. No nothing, no screen, no fan sound

I don’t know what I am going to do…. I called support and they had me take it to a Apple store near by and the store replaced the RAM but still same problem. So I had to carry it all back home 2 hours later no further ahead. Those Apple stores are in malls so it a real pain lugging around a 24" imac. ....

That is already more support than I ever wanted to do with a Mac. I thought everyone said Macs work? So, I don’t know if I want to invest anymore time in this effort.

Sad and dissapointed.

Out of the five PC's and Macs that me and my close family have bought over the past 2 years, only the one I am writing this on had no problems at all.

1) Dell Vista one - had to wipe it within 7 days.
2) Macbook - keyboard needed fixing.
3) Macbook - battery needed replacing.
4) Dell - screen needed replacing.
5) This Macbook - actually worked from the start, so 1 in 5!!

Get the message?? Computers nowadays have a lot more that can go wrong with them, so I assume that they WILL go wrong in the first two weeks.

Blank it out from your memory - you know, like when you go on holiday, you don't remember the flight out there do you?

Good luck!

Generally speaking Macs, refurbs included, have an excellent record for reliability, but there'll always be the odd inevitable dud (which will be little consolation to you).

Take it back & this time make sure the Apple store either has it working in full view or offers a replacement. The mistake here lies with the Apple store not testing the iMac & making sure it was working before returning it to you. I hope they compensate you for all the quite avoidable extra hassle.

Good advice about blanking it from my memory. You've had bad luck with computers. I've have 7 other computers in the past 2 years in my family (3 of us). So I am 1/7, the Mac spoiled the good run.

IBM x60 Tablet (Vista) - Worked never a problem.
IBM x61 Tablet (Vista) - Worked never a problem.
IBM x43 Laptop - After 3 years a key fell off, but, it snapped right back on.
No Name built it yourself PC - Never a problem.
Toshiba m60?- Batterys died after 2 years (normal from what I have read)
OLPC XO (laptop.org) - Worked perfectly. Daughter loves this laptop BTW
iMac 24" , 2.8 - Dead on arrival :(

I guess I should just forget about it and consider myself lucky that it is only 1/7. A simple test to see if the Mac would have powered up before it left the factory would have saved me a lot of hassle.

I bought it online and its a referb so the Apple store said they couldn't do anything. I sort of hoped they would at least take it off my hands and FedEx it back to the Apple mothership for me. I had it drag it across the mall then back home. Now I will have to print out a return label and drive it down to FedEx/Kinkos to get rid of it.

It would be nice if they compensate me somehow. If not I might just ask for a refund and wait for the new iMacs to come out and pick one up at a store.

I've never had a Apple store discriminate against a refurb or purchased at apple.com vs mall apple store as long as the computer was, 1. a Mac and 2. within warranty.

I would have been a very happy customer, if they would have done that for me. It was like, because I bought it online they didn't need to help me. It was a Mac and it arrived 2 hours before I dragged it around town.

I just got off the phone with support and I returned everything. I guess it's not time for this (20 year) PC user to make the switch. My PC frineds will be happy to have me back in their camp. Sorry guys, I tried. :)

I hope the improved iMac is released March 11th. I told my neighbour to cancel his iMac order last week and now he's bothering me everyday with "Where's my iMac?" questions.

My other buddy bought an iMac last month and is wondering why he didn't do it sooner.

Bad luck, I know it is frustrating.

But you get what you pay for in life, and I'm done buying "refurbished" goods. There is no way to tell where they were used previously, how, or by whom.

If they were in store, you should see the way school kids mistreat them. Ditto demo-models anywhere. If they were sent back, why??

Sure, maybe someone didn't like it compared to PC and couldn't get used it to it, so sent it back - but how are you supposed to know that? I would rather pay £200 extra for the peace of mind knowing that it was new.

If something still goes wrong, then it is pure bad luck.

I aggree with you about thre extra $ for the peace of mind. I am too done with reberbs.

Funny thing is... I have had MORE luck with refurbs then new computers. I bought a first gen MacBook brand new, and by the end, I had to replace the the logic board TWICE and the the drive THRICE!!!

A horror story yes, but 3 refurbs since then (one MBP, one Mini, and another MB) , I have not had ONE problem.

Just goes to show that your are never guaranteed in the tech product world... and I think it's getting worse over time. :(

hey guys,
do you think the "old" intel imacs, which will be reduced in price when the new penryn imacs arrive will be cheaper on the open market (not apple store) than 1440,- euro which is the current price of the refurb imac 24? "old" MBP for example is still cheaper on the open market than in apple store refurb and normal).buy now the imac in refurb or wait until the reduction on the "old" imacs was done??

It's my theory that the current "refurbs" actually ARE brand-new current gen iMacs... not refurbished at all. Right now the iMac refurbs say "Limited Time Special Price" under them... which is something I myself have not seen in the refurb area before. Also, they are NOT selling out, like they usually do every week.

This would also coincide with the rumor reports saying that the next release is being delayed only by inventory clearance.

Anyone else think that they'll take this opportunity to update the keyboard (black keys) and the MightyMouse (black with silver scroll-ball/side buttons and maybe silver Apple logo?) Seems like an obvious change.

I agree. I made a similar statement earlier in the thread regarding the timing of an update in relation to the refurb section. If the shipping time is any indication of product availability, there are plenty of iMacs to be had (everything is shipping within 24 hours).

Obviously it makes business sense for Apple to see what's in stock before introducing an updated version. I would assume that once the update comes out, the current models will be considered "previous generation" and will sell at a deeper discount than 17-18%. That's what I'm waiting for. If the update isn't that grand, I'll just get a deeper discount on a current model. I guess there's the risk that they'll sell out of the current generation, but I'll take my chances.

My opininon: No update this week. :(
