more likely it will stick with merom but get the SR chipset. They love to keep the mini crippled, for some reason.

The problem with this is Intel is phasing out the Merom very quickly, and forcing Apple to update products that might otherwise not have seen an upgrade until June, i.e. Macbook.

The mini will see Penryn sooner than you think, even if it's only because Intel forces the transition.

Be happy you have the option to buy a computer and the luxury of a current machine to allow you to wait for an update or two.

May your next macbench score be a factor of ten increase, like mine was.

Yes, but regardless, I canceled the $2,600 2.8ghz iMac order. If I'm going to spend that much money, I'd like to wait and take the risk that a matte screen will be introduced. I live in "Sunny" San Diego in a small, all white apartment with LOTS of windows... I can at least dream that Apple cares enough to offer matte for us folks. The step between this iMac and an equal Mac Pro+23" Apple Cinema Display is about a $1,200 difference. :(

Intel are still taking orders for Meroms until the end of May. Units will still be shipping until mid next year. I think its is only the high volume MB and MBPs that need to be moved over. I think the mini is "safe" for a few months yet.

If they do bump the RAM to 2 GB in the base model, would it likely be a 1X2 GB RAM module, or 2X1 GB modules?

Apple will always give users TWO 1GB chips. These dual core systems work better with equally paired RAM, so it helps those that don't want to upgrade for a while, but for us, the ones that want to upgrade immediately, is sucks.

I do wish they had the option of just getting ONE 2GB chip, or NONE whatsoever.

80%? Are you sure? I'm canceling my order right now then... crap. :( You're really certain? (Your post count leads me to believe you are!)

info from apple on return n refund policy:

Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:

Product that is custom configured to your specifications, including personalized products
...

The glossy screen problem is overrated. I have color edited on worse monitors than that, and the display isn't that bad.... other than the reflection that is :D

To you it's overrated, but for a lot of people with appparently more sensitivity to reflection and glare, it's a big issue. I don't know why so many people here are so quick to write off the complaints and concerns about this. There are clearly two camps of people: those whose eyesight allows them to ignore glare and reflection and those whose eyesight doesn't.

Apple is no longer the "beleagured" computer maker it once was and they have more resources at their disposal than ever before. It's not an unreasonable request that Apple either a) introduce a headless iMac/mid-range tower so a third-party monitor can be used with it, or b) offer a matte screen option as they do with the MacBook Pros. The "one size fits all" mentality is a problem with all-in-ones and Apple needs to think about how to make everyone happy, not just those for whom the glossy screen isn't an issue.

Either way, you can see for yourself that I am not alone in this opinion. There are others right here in this thread who say it's a problem. I wish some of you wouldn't be so dismissive of that. It matters to some of us and we don't appreciate the rush to defend Apple's misstep here at all costs.

And you know what? I'm willing to pay a little extra for the privilege of a matte screen option. So before anyone jumps in with that tired old line about how it would cost Apple too much to do it, bear in mind, that I would be happy to pay for that option. But Apple has, thus far, shown no interest in offering it.

Are you adding apple ram and upping the HD to 750GB on the iMac? You know you can get RAM much cheaper from OWC or crucial, or almost anywhere?

Likewise, $900 for the Apple 23" display is steep. You can do much better elsewhere. Same with the $500 Apple charges for 2x1GB of RAM for the pros.

I completely agree! If apple is being forced to make updates that they would not otherwise do for a few months, there could be updates very close to eachother.. There have been rumors on design updates for the MBs, MBPs, and the iMacs, which could mean another update for these products may come up right away.. making many consumers of these products a bit upset!

Matte vs Glossy

Would be nice if they introduced a matte screen option with the update... but I'm not holding my breath.

Ironically, when the glossy screen option first came out, I thought it looked quite impressive. I ordered one on the MB for my daughter and we have discovered that it can get a nasty reflection if the lighting is just right.

I am very happy with the matte screen on my MBP and recommend it highly.

What a gip. Yeah, they should at least offer the option for no RAM. It isn't very environmentally friendly of them, since the 1GB modules will just end up in the trash.

I think it is good business for Apple to consistently and systematically release updates through out the year.

In contrast, can you think of ANY major hardware/software companies that have come close to making the innovative progress that Apple has in the last 12 months?

Dell or Any PC Manufacturer? No
Microsoft? No
Sony? No
Samsung? No

I think you would be hard pressed to come up with a single name that could hold its own against Apple.

My friend just ordered an iMac 3 days ago.
Today, he got an email saying that they dropped the price for one of his parts and therefore they are changing the total price of his order.
So this must be cuz of the upcoming update, right?

Actually, if I remember correctly...

OWC will let you do a trade up type thing where you buy the new RAM and once it is installed, you send them your Previous RAM sticks and they will credit you the difference. I could be wrong about that but doesn't seem like something I would make up from nowhere...

i'm hoping for this as well.

my hopes have risen since Apple included a matte screen option for the new MacBook Pros released yesterday.

I would too. No question. The screen is why, even though I would so love a 24'' I continue to hold off. And ponder one of the older model white ones.

You might want to hold onto your original RAM: I received a weird "source media" error when trying to install Leopard on my MacBook CD with 2 GB of OWC RAM. Restoring the original 1 GB from Apple allowed the installation to go through, and then I swapped the OWC RAM back in. I haven't had any trouble since. There's some speculation that the installation process for Leopard is a bit more stringent on non-Apple RAM than everyday usage is.

I've thought about that too but if I'm going to spend that much money on a new machine, it's going to be a new machine.
