Very Simple...I don't WANT too and I don't NEED to.

Only individuals with EGO trips think like this or say that ALLLL those that don't jailbreak are "afraid". Why do you all think you are so much better, smarter then the normal everyday user that just wants to use things like they were designed. Let me open your eyes...YOU ARE NOT!!! You are just in your own little selfish world that no matter what is out there, you are not happy with and hack it. You probably hack your computer games to because you are not good enough to play un-hacked so you have to cheat. You probably cheat at work or cheat at school because you don't want to do it the way everyone else does. You probably even cheat on your wife/girlfriend. The majority do not live your life style so I think it you who is the "dumb ass"!

If you look down in the jail breaking section and the help section it seems to me that there are an awful lot of users that have problems with jail broken phones or can't re-flash to the original settings because they were so brave and smart...give me a break you looser, you aren't as great as you think you are!!!

WOW you are taking this WAY out of hand. Calm down before you hurt yourself. Why are you comparing jailbreaking to cheating in school or on a girlfriend? That was totally out of context and does not relate to this situation at ALL. Please think before you type so when decide to write an irrelevant nonsensical argument you will stop yourself. I was not trying to have an 'ego' by saying that jailbreaking is the way to go. All I was saying is that it isn't the big bad thing that it is put out to be. It's a great way to make full use of your iPhone that you paid good money for. And tell me, when did I EVER say I was so "great" and I was so "smart" because I jailbreak my phone. Stop putting words into my mouth. I never said that other people are afraid to jailbreak which is why they don't. I said that if you aren't STUPID that jailbreaking is easy and will not "break" your phone. I completely respect people's decisions not to jailbreak for their own reasons. I'm not trying to be this ultra strong advocate for jailbreaking saying it is the only way, just giving my opinion on the matter.

I jailbroke my ipod touch before the app store existed. But when I got my 3G I looked and didn't see any software via cydia that made me want to. There's nothing there. Same reason why I don't drive to Canada, there's nothing there that I want...so why do it?
Now, if they had video recording software AND MMS capabilities then maybe. But other then that, I don't have a reason so.

THIS is what you said:

"IF you aren't a complete dumbass, jailbreaking is the way to go and cannot "break" your phone. And as for restoring to normal, it makes it like it was out of the box, untraceable."

NOT your revised version above! Your use of words and sentence structure wouldn't have been so insulting if you had stated it like you did above. You came across as cocky and arrogant because you hack your phone. When you talk like a normal person then offense is not taken.

By the way, I am very calm and far from hurting myself. I recommend that you also review what and how you type something before posting, and then you won't get so many negative replies about your post.

The good money I paid for my iPhone both Classic and 3G was well spent and it is well used WITHOUT altering the way that it was designed to work. When and if Apple decides to add more options then I will update and use those options.

I do not need to hack to enjoy it and I took offense at your use of "dumbass" and the context that it was used. I am sick of hackers, and programmers that try to steal, vandalize, change and try to incapacitate everyday computers with their stinkin virus's, keyloggers, spam, cheats, spyware etc.

I am sorry if I offended you with my blast but that is how your post came across and not only to me.

I want to Jailbreak my phone

I tried searching this forum and I couldn't really find anything. I tried Googling it and I found many different results. Can anybody recommend a particular site that has step by step directions. I am using an iBook G4 btw.

The reason for not jailbreaking my phone is simple and nobody ever mentions this:

Its wrong!

You buy a product and basically form a contract with Apple and AT&T. They hold up their end of the bargain by placing a warranty on your purchase. Your end is to not hack the phone.

I think you might have a point if you were talking about unlocking, but not jailbreaking. I think jailbreaking your iPhone is morally equivalent to going slightly over the posted speed limit on a highway or not wearing your seat belt. No one is actually being wronged except possibly yourself. In fact I'd go so far as to say that jailbreaking HELPS Apple and AT&T by increasing iPhone sales somewhat. I personally would not have bought an iPhone if there wasn't a way to tether it to my laptop. I don't use the tethering very often, so I'm not actually using any more of AT&T's bandwidth than I normally would have, but occasionally I really do find it useful to tether, and I wouldn't have switched to AT&T if I couldn't have kept doing so.

Unlocking and switching to a different network is different, since then you're actually slightly affecting AT&T's pocketbook, so I could respect it if you think that's wrong.

Trust

I have a lot of personal info in this iPhone 3g. I do not trust some ambigous third party to keep my best intrests in mind by not broadcasting my browsing history or pics or phone numbers to malicous parties. I jailbroke my sold-2get-iPhone iPod touch so I know that the main benifits are cosmetic. Being able to customize my iPod touch was great but it didn't have half the communication and location possibilities that this phone has, and my mom's phone number & address weren't stored in it. Once again Trust is the biggest problem aside from the fact that when it's all said and done you won't feel like a criminal. Who is to say that once jailbroken the iphone is not free game to serious personal invasions of privacy? Forever. After all, I paid for and expect that apple will do everything in it's power to protect my privacy as long as I play my part. Trust.

IDK I guess I don't really care or am uninformed. What's the advantage to having it jailbroken? I know i can get apps and stuff but It's not really bothering me.

Maybe you should look again... both video recording and mms is available for jailbroken phones.

This thread is simply going to upset me. There is a great deal of ignorance in the first ten posts.

I have alway asked myself why some people refuse to jailbreak their phones. Can some enlighten me?

The only reason I would jailbreak at this point in time is for Winterboard. Unfortunately Winterboard causes the phone to be even more sluggish than it is with vanilla firmware (ever compared an iPhone 3G to an iPod touch 2G, side by side? It's absolutely PATHETIC) ... So for now, I'm not jailbroken. Performance is more important to me than custom icons. ;)

Winterboard hasn't seemed to slow down my iPhone 3G at all :apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

That's wonderful. It slows down my iPhone 3G considerably, and if Apple would get off their collective *** and give us copy/paste, I'd point you to the thread in the Hacks forum where plenty of other people report the same thing. ;)

So with the exception of changing themes and downloading Youtube videos... whats useful

maybe tethering but UCLA has wi-fi pretty much anywhere in westwood

NES games... i have a laptop, desktop, and a NES for that :p
Camera and recording... The iPhone camera sucks
I would recommend everyone buy a Canon SD870IS its amazing
Change carrier names... wow thats amazing -___-
Backgrounder = Even shorter battery life

I refuse to jailbreak for two reasons

A) Voids warranty

but more importantly

B) I can't have my primary phone be unstable ( I would definately jailbreak an iPod Touch)

I just don't care much for jailbreaking because I am satisfied with what this device is capable of doing already. The free applications I already have x out me needing any 3rd part apps. I also just don't have the time to just play with my phone to take time for jailbreaking and the process or even just dealing with any of the problems that it comes along with it sometimes

I jailbroke my phone in order to fill in some gaps in the iPhone's functionality, like having icons for mail & voicemail in the status bar, and having repeated missed call/SMS notifications.

I can see why some people are hesitant to jailbreak though, my current system is stable, but previous attempts have wasted a lot of time in having to restore the phone, or have broken core functionality.

another reason to jailbreak MEWSEEK.. you can download music directly to your iphone then download pwnplayer and play the music its awesome

I'm with you, I'm pretty content with what my phone can do. Maybe I'll jailbreak later when/if I have a need to (running a notebook off 3G would be awesome if I had a notebook), but honestly I kinda like the "classic" Apple look :)

I have had an iphone since august of '07 and was always afraid to try jailbreaking because of the warrenty thing. Then I upgraded to the 3G and the warrenty on my 1st gen expired so I decided to try to jailbreak my 1st gen. Well when I discovered how easy it was with quickpwn and all the cool apps I could get get I quickly decided to jailbreak my 3G too. I really like all the cool themes you can just download from cydia. Right now my springboard looks like a Vending machine complete with cool bag of chips and soda like icons. Thats the main reason I keep it jailboken. I have cycorder and its cool but since I am not really interested in SSH there is no way to get the videos off the phone. That kinda sucks.

I'm curious if those that jailbroke their phones looked into the third party developers before they let them make changes and download files to their phones.

Apple can delete apps remotely...I wonder what quickpwn can do remotely?

It seems like there might be a hidden cost to jailbreaking. Your pirvacy.
