What was it that Steve Jobs said in 1997?

"This isn't a war. If Apple wants to be successful, then Apple has to do a really good job. And if we fail, that's no-one else's fault but ours".

Quit yappin' Phil and get back to work!

Also need to care about someone not copy your work!!!

In my eyes, Apple is at its best when they seem magical – above what's going on in the rest of the tech industry. Separate and apart from the noise of CES and attack ads; just remaining quiet and then... boom: another history-making device. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they had written down "magical" on all their whiteboards . They should give the illusion of beautiful sorcery. Once in a while Steve Jobs would come down from their tower and make a few comments, but that's it. I agree with M.G. Siegler when he says that it was dumb of Phil Schiller to say negative stuff the day before the Samsung release. It does make Apple look afraid and vulnerable. The uncertain popular guy picks on the little kid at school. The confident popular guy doesn't give a **** about the little kid at school. Apple needs to do their thing, be audacious in their goal-setting, and otherwise not give a **** about Samsung. Beat them with confidence. Usain Bolt doesn't look over his shoulder when he's running. He's just always gunning full speed down the track.

This may have been a calculated move by the Apple brass intended more towards Samsung due to their launch of the SIV today. Samsung had those attack ads when the iPhone 5 was revealed so maybe it was Schiller trying to do the same in a way. Should he have done so? It hasn't been the norm at Apple in recent years, but Apple hasn't been a stranger to these methods i.e. 1984, "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC...", even the "Think different" campaign. What Schiller said reminded me of Ballmer and how he reacts to Apple products.

As for the analogy of Android being the "little kid at school", um no. Android has the market, NOT the manufacturers, but the Android OS has the market. Android would be the big guy on campus, although Apple wouldn't be the nerdy geek either, but rather the rival.

When you compare hardware company to hardware company, Apple still is king. What Samsung did last year was mostly compete against the older 4 and 4s models using a couple of new models. When you consider that Samsung record sales included several models compared to Apple's 3 models 4, 4s and 5 and the 5 wasn't out till the last quarter, it's impressive how well Apple did. Samsung, HTC, LG, Nexus fans can talk about specs, bells and whistles, etc., but how can they explain people turning to the 4s in spite of all these supposedly great specs on the other phones? People are NOT brainwashed nor are they sheep, they know quality and appreciate it. Apple products continually hold that prestigious label of consistent quality... more consistency in quality and design than the others at least.

First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

Quite apt. ;)

Agreed, but that's not Androids of Google's fault. Well maybe indirectly because they give the manufacturers the option to customize the OS.

I'm not quite sure that's totally correct.

But it is really the different manufacturers (Samsung, HTC, Sony, Huawei, LG Motorola etc.) fault. They have an option to release their phones with stock/vanilla Android OS.

BIB - I don't think they do. They have to apply drivers and customisations to the OS to support the hardware choices they use. This is one of the downsides to "fragmentation".

It's too big a chain - the OS gets developed by Google, who then make it available to the manufacturers. The manufacturers then apply their drivers and custom software, then make it available to the carriers, who then apply their customisations and settings and finally make it available to the end user.

But Google let them customize the OS to their liking, giving them a choice (I know, almost unknown in the iOS world, but I believe this is a good thing).

Again, I disagree. You've got stock Android, but then you have custom launchers and different ways of working per device. If you mean end user customisation - studies from HTC have shown that not much customisation actually happens.

I don't believe you can say that one OS is better than the other, for everyone. But then again, isn't it nice we have a choice?

You are absolutely 10,000x correct.

I LOVE ANDROID FRAGMENTATION.

Developers don't. This is the reason why Android apps take longer and are generally speaking poorer quality to those released on iOS.

Once you get your hands on the iPhone and or iPad then look at the competing clowns you know there ain't no contest.
The fit and finish of iOS leaves, at least me, breathless. I have become spoiled.
And what type of no brainier is it for Apple to release a big ass iPhone? They don't need to. Nor a cheaper iPhone.
Besides Sammy doesn't have to pay for Android; so they can afford to go XL on a phone. Now, if Apple did a 5 inch retina iPhone all hell wold break the ******* loose up in this b****!

Your thought for the day..."More is not better".
Yep, so in your world if everyone wears the same clothes it must be a good thing. It just doesn´t matter how good it is if there´s no variety, anymore. And Apple is getting more and more boring every day, they just don´t want to change clothes. There is a pretty good reason why people like Schiller want to point out things Apple still has an advantage in, it´s because Apple lost everything else to their competition.

Apple lost Steve and no one else can sell dreams and new products better than him. Keynotes are not fun to listen to, anymore. It´s the same stuff just with better internals all the time. They are no new ideas about anything.

Apple lost it´s soul, which was Steve. They better have something in store fast that is going to change something radical (like a much improved iOS 7), because Apple needs to compete and not stand still.

The argument from Schiller "Seamless experience, hardware and software." is ridiculous, because the changes made since iOS 5.1.1 were rather insignificant, bugfixing or things like Facebook or Twitter integration, big deal Mr. Schiller. You deserve a raise for that!

How do you backup and restore your note 2? You rebought all of your apps for android? What are you using instead of Photostream, iWork, iCloud, Garageband, iPhoto, Find my phone, Find my Friends, etc. etc.

Sorry, but you're not fooling anyone.

They're tied to your Google Play account, so you just re-download on a new device. No need to buy again. Real complicated stuff here.

That's not fragmentation, that's skinning and customization. The fragmentation argument, at least when it comes to Android, is based on OS version. There's still a sizable contingent running 2.3 - I was until just recently - vs. 3.0, 4.1, 4.2, etc. and also different device screen size. It's been getting better though, just like iOS fragmentation has been getting worse. Ask the iPhone or iPad owners who couldn't update to the latest iOS because their device wasn't supported or the iPhone owners who didn't get Siri for some reason. Fragmentation.

He has a point, since Steve has gone they haven't really done anything new, repackaging the iPhone is pointless, people want a larger flashier screen like the S3, even I do and I hate the company! and the Keynotes are not fun to listen to, I'm sure Tim is as passionate about Apple products but it's just not there is it, at least Steve sounded like he himself was using the products and excited by them , Tim only sounds excited by the sales numbers..

Yes and thats why your getting your ass kicked by Android.
Depends on how you define "ass kicking". Apple makes 2/3rds of the entire industry's profits, consistently gets highest customer ratings, and consistently maintains 90%+ customer retention.

I have owned the S3, Nexus 4 and the Note 2 and i can tell you fragmentation hasnt hurt my experience one bit.
That is really hard to believe considering that neither of the above utilizes Android to its fullest. Nexus 4 gets latest updates but lacks in important features such as expansion and LTE. Both, the GS3 and the Note2 don't get latest updates.

PC's are fragmented to hell and they dont suffer. In fact OSX cant perform a single benchmark better than PC in any games.

No. Not to the extent to which Android is. One can easily upgrade to the latest version of Windows (e.g. Win7 or 8) on a machine purchased a few years ago. Unlike with Android. One can easily remove the crapware that comes preinstalled on it, unlike with Android.

Dont tell consumers its for their benefit you make the hardware and software. Its for your profit only

Tell that to MacBooks Pros/Airs, which have the best trackpads and battery life in the industry, or to iPhones/iPads, which have the best battery life and a most responsive touchscreen in the industry.
Or finally, tell that to Samsung, who's been doing nothing but trying to emulate Apple's impeccable hardware/software/service integration these past few years.

What a little turd this guy is. Worry about innovating again Phil.

Typed from my S3...with a nice pull down notification bar with extremely convenient toggles you don't have.

Its ironic (nay, insulting to peoples intelligence) Schiller talking about Android users running older operating systems when I myself am still running IOS 5.1.1 because I didn’t want to loose Google Maps in favour of Apples sub-standard offering! Likewise, any IOS changes haven’t really affected me or the way I use my iPhone (4) in day-to-day use - IOS looks the same now as it did 5 years ago (i.e. it works but boy is it boring, unexciting and uninspiring compared to Android or even the Windows phone I’m now happily using for work … and will, providing Samsung don’t over wow me tomorrow with the S4, become my iPhone 4 replacement).

As for fragmentation and seamless working; that’s far from the case based on the Android experiences I’ve had; and having used a Note 2 for a short period of time, I’d gladly put up with these (unnoticed) ‘fragments’ and such like in return for the power, versatility, ease and sheer beauty of the Note against any Apple phone!

As such, his statement ‘the experience isn't as good as an iPhone’ is subjective and far from the experience I found and that, I’m sure, of all current non-iPhone users!

What Schiller and Apple need to do is stop bashing (and suing!) the competition, pull their heads out their backsides and deliver a comparable product (hardware and IOS) … and when I say hardware, I mean in style before all you Apple sheep start bleating about plastic versus (easy to scratch!) aluminium! They also need to stop their blatant ripping off and include micro SD storage because whereas I can live without a replaceable battery, I don’t see why I should have to pay Apple an extra £100 per 16MB when most competitors give me the option to upgrade myself cheaply.

As an Apple user and fan for the past 12 years, I have to say I’m beginning to loath Apple as I once did Microsoft – because I’m fed up with them resting on their laurels with old boring products with no vision, their relentless quest for style (eg iMac thickness) over substance (eg no optical drives and SD slots on the back!!!!!!), their constant berating of other brands, worshipping of the bully that was Jobs and now Jonny Ive (anyone can design a good looking unit – but respect should go to the people that actually build these dreams!)

I guess the public will vote with their wallets tomorrow – whatever Schiller, Ive, the ghost of Jobs and the rest of Apple would like us to think!

Phil Schiller can, and will say anything he likes. Truth is however, Apple is clearly losing ground in the smartphone-scene. I am sure the iPhone 5 is still the best selling smartphone, however I doubt it will be for long. The competition has caught up, and overtaken Apple. People in my surroundings are clearly disappointed with the iPhone 5 and its lack of innovation, and many have chosen to go for the Galaxy S3 instead. The Galaxy S3 outsold the iPhone until the iPhone 5 was released. This year, the Galaxy S4 will be released (tomorrow) while Apple's probably got nothing more to show than a spec-bumped iPhone 5S this summer (which will look more or less the same as the three year old iPhone 4). This could very well be the year when iPhone sales are surpassed by the Galaxy, unless Apple really bring out their guns.

I also believe that the aforementioned are a few of the reasons why we've seen such a deep decline of the AAPL stocks as of recently, which sucks big time for me, as a shareholder.

I for one, have used iPhones since they were first made available here in Sweden (2009) and iOS devices a year or two before that. Truth is, not much has really happened since those days. The user experience is still the same. You would have expected a revamped OS after perhaps 5 years - this has not been the case - hence many people choose to jump ship, and try something new. Trust me, the iPhone 3GS was the best phone I've ever had, and my iPhone 4S is also very good - however, I'm simply bored with it. That said, I will probably give the Galaxy S4 a try.

You can "find your iPhone" the next time your phone is stolen. Does the Galaxy also come with that feature, or do you need an app for that?

The Galaxy certainly does. Its called SamsungDive and just needs activating in the settings.

Failing that, theres plenty of "Find My Phone" apps you can install from Google Play. Some even designed to be installed and activated AFTER your phone has been lost of stolen!

----------

And with Find MY iPhone I can track my wifes iPhone, my iPod touch, my iPad, my iPhone and all my Mac computers. All from any of my iDevices and Mac computers.

Why would I want to track my wifes iphone? That just seems wrong!

----------

Android has a counterpart for Find My iPhone?

Sure does, see my first reply :)

The concept of what I phone is says that is a bad idea. They removed that feature because of the need for security. It is primarily a phone and that aspect has to be front and center. There are Apps for that like files or dropbox. But the point is that users shouldn't have to search around to figure out what apps are compatible with what. For instance Android out of the box never supported PDF, Doc, or even vCard files even though these have been supported in since the second version of iOS or sooner. The next Android version is adding support but how many years have these simple expectations been unavailable with out downloading a special application. But customization is hailed as more important than having something so simple.

Flash Player ... I'll say no more!!!!!!

The word fragmentation always makes me chuckle. Its not just Android that has iust, but Apples fragmentation seems to be getting greater as the years pass - Siri, Flyover etc etc. Just because your running the latest ios version, dosent mean you will have all the features!

Plus with Android, the majority of features are standalone apps that get updated separately via Google Play. Android users dont have to wait a year to get an email, maps, Google Now update etc, as they are handled separately.

"We're insanely great and they suck."

What a stunning revelation.

Didn't Douglas Adams maroon all the marketers on an alien planet
where they quickly perished because of their inability to do anything
really useful in life?

Actually, IIRC, it was Earth he marooned them on and although they were meant to die out, they instead infected and wiped out the cavemen and WE are their descendants

That is absolutely not the definition of fragmentation!

oh dear....

I can see this article causing frosted Android users, but we Apple fans KNOW its all true, don't we :)

How else can you can say "Developers often dump the Android platform, and go to IOS because their are too many phones to develop for"

As mentioned plain and simple....

At least, all IOS devices "stay up-to-date automatically"

Try saying this to Android users.

I wonder - does being an iPhone user cause poor spelling and grammar, or is it the other way around? There must be a thesis in there somewhere.

I guess you haven't considered that english may not be his first language.

I think its no need to argue, the stock price reflect on what the market perceived on Apple.

Now there are not exactly new things in Smart Phone since iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S, Google Glass should be.

As one of Apple regular customer, I personally lost my "Wow" on Apple product. I smell things happened in golf club industry, claim to release the club that yield few yards longer. Same as we saw "thiner, lighter and faster".

My "wow" is mean, I want to run to the shop to buy it because of its function, design and experience. People still buy things from Apple and will be like this for long time. But their image will shifted to be either "Sony" or B&O.

That why Apple lost its appeal to me. Rumours that it will released it iPhone 5S soon. But I believe that it will be the same phone again like iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

Can people please stop up voting stupidity. the top comments of every article makes it seem like macrumors users are all idiots. oh wait

Do the carriers really have to apply their customizations and settings? Is that a US only thing or is it like that in any other countries also? I have only bought unlocked phones directly from the stores and no carrier has had anything to to customize in the OS on those devices at least.

If the manufacturers only had to apply their drivers it wouldn't take all that long to push out an upgrade. But now many have their own apps and skins that have to be redone, which take time.

Ok, so how much does Apple have to pay for iOS, that make them not afford to go "XL"?
