I am considering an S4 so I played around an S3 the other day for a few hours. I find it very laggy (i.e swiping seems laggy or delayed, browsing fluctuates as well).

Is it just me?

Well, isn't the whole point of Android? Multiple models of phone for different people? Secondly, if I can only pick 1 phone, why does it have to be a non-LTE phone? The Nexus is an inferior phone for the 2013 North American market (if you can even get one).

Isn't that always the fun part of the Anti-Apple-arguments?

The fandroids are combining every argument against Apple in a gigantic mega-argument, while each Android device or Android manufacturer features only a small number of the features used in those arguments.

"Android has higher sales than Apple" - Yeah, because a dozen companies are selling Android devices, but even Samsung - the only company with a really high number of sales of Android devices - sells fewer devices than Apple - and is giving away tons of their tablets for free if you buy their TVs.

"Android has USB, HDMI, SD-card, removable battery, Full HD, SAMOLED Plus, Newest Android for Nexus devices, 5" displays, stylus, S-Voice, Blinkfeed, Ultrapixel cameras, keyboards, etc..." - Yeah, but in 20 different devices and you can't have Nexus AND removable Battery/SD slot, the HTC One's ultrapixel camera and the Note's stylus etc.

The only one in this thread who can use ALL of these features is pandamonia, because he's buying a new device at least every three months^^

Oh yeah, sure it can (and is)! It does go both ways. I was just curious as to what the OP had to say :)

I remember people that thought you couldn't use MP3 files on an iPhone due to all the "Apple is closed" blabla they heard from their Android using friends.

Find my phone
Avast Mobile Security. A free app that lets you track your phone and remotely lock it. It also includes the option to remotely control the phone via the web and sms. You can also wipe the phone memory, lock it, and turn on a 'siren' that cant be disabled without pulling the battery.

And with Find MY iPhone I can track my wifes iPhone, my iPod touch, my iPad, my iPhone and all my Mac computers. All from any of my iDevices and Mac computers.

My best friend has one and has the latest OS. Complains about it all the time. Pissed off royally. Wants out of his contract and is willing to pay the restock fee. Fell for Fandroids telling him to go their way and he fell for it. And yes I've played with his phone and a few people in my immediately family have Android. It sucks. People know this. No need in pretending it's suddenly turned into cake with buttercream frosting.... Uh oh, Google may use my "buttercream frosting" as a new name for their next OS.

Ahh yes the "Friend" story. Seems to be posted a lot here. A "Friend" has one and doesnt like it (unspecified reason) thus that must mean that it sucks. Couldn't possibly be that:

A) Said "friend" is a non-existant entity
B) Said "friend" is using a pre 4.x Android device
C) Said "friend" has no clue what he's doing

Face it. Android used to be a pile of crap, but for the last 18 months has been a damn fine rival to iOS, with a lot more happening in the way of core OS features. What significant features has iOS had added in that time exactly?

It is actually possible to have a healthy debate, and not resort to childish "its crap because my friend said so" stuff. I use iOS, however I can recognise that Android 4.x is a hell of a good OS now.

Anyone else excited for the Samsung Galaxy S IV? :)

Actually, I am. I get to see if Samsung actually did something new or just copied from other manufacturers.

Personally I do not like Samsung, I am more excited about the HTC One. That phone actually has a great design.

No different with Samsung, LG and all these other companies...just about all these companies heavily rely on Foxxconn, which is known to have underage kids and poor working conditions and what not

Not going to dispute that at all. You are correct... but when somebody tries to pump up Apple as being some American economy booster it makes some of us laugh. Samsung employs way more Americans then Apple does. More Samsung products are made in the US. Way more. I'm surprised this is even being talk about on an Apple forum because it isn't even close. Apple loses this battle all day long.

Standard FUD. Wouldn't expect anything less from a company that has stopped innovating and is now in the business of copying.

Microsoft was the captain of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. It took three decades to break the FUD roadblock that having anything but Microsoft would utterly destroy the enterprise. And what do we think of M$ products today? Junk.

Apple had a knockout blockbuster when it launched the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Then... nothing. Huge presentation three times a year but not a single innovations in two years. "Ohh look everyone we have a new lens on the camera." woohoo?

Everyone else has caught up to and in many cases surpassed the technology and user interface so it's time to copy good old M$ and scare people away from the competition with the FUD of "fragmentation," "cheap," "isn't single vendor technology." That last one is straight from Microsoft's playbook.

So much for Apple being "Different."

There are certainly advantages of iOS, but alot of this is PR. When you ask the apposition what they thing about a competing product their smartest move is to slam it tastefully.

"Android is often given as a free alternative to a feature phone". Isn't that the case with iPhone now too, in many countries? I can get an iPhone 4, on contract, "for free" currently if I wanted to. And that is wonderful! But why is that a point against Android in his mind. It used to be that Android was always the least expensive (upfront) option. That is no longer the case.

"Devices don't interact seamlessly" is another one I hear a lot. What is this seamlessness people are worried about? Things like notes, calendars, contact books, etc. sync seamlessly just fine on Android. There are also plenty of services (Evernote comes to mind) that sync seamlessly over multiple platforms. Google music is another such service that works on every platform I use. So what's my point? It all depends on what you are looking at.

Fragmentation is really the only issue that I see as a problem, and even that is only for the uninformed user. Unfortunately, the average smartphone user probably fits into that category. Google has done a lot, and continues to do a lot, in this filed with the Nexus line, which is certainly appreciated.

This is doing nothing more than stoke up the flames of fanboys on both sides.

Personally, Google bring their best Android apps to iOS anyway, and the iOS versions are often better (see recent reviews of Google Search and Maps on iOS).

I have no issue using Google apps and have Chrome, Search (soon to be updated to Google Now), GMail, YouTube, and Maps on my iPhone 4S and love the UI.

For me I get the best of both worlds, I get the best hardware and the most fluid OS but with the very best apps Google has to offer.

Thank you, was going to say this also. Best of both worlds, well put.

And with Find MY iPhone I can track my wifes iPhone, my iPod touch, my iPad, my iPhone and all my Mac computers.

IIRC there is a free app called 'Family Tracker' for Android that does this. The Avast one just has a few extra features (like the alarm).

I am so sick of the talking we keep hearing from Apple. If it doesn't prove the fact that Android has now become a threat to Apple and they are worried then I don't know what will. Use to be a time when Apple wouldn't have anything to say about Android. The fact they now have something to say at every corner speaks volumes.

I wish Apple would focus on their stale OS and stop worrying about feeding the fanboys.

Apple is focusing on it...has been for the last months since they fired Forstall and installed Ive as the head of UI design for iOS/OSX.

As for Android, they are just spreading a lot of false information.

The continual fact that they refuse to release sales #s just shows their sales aren't good. And the fact that over 43% of Android users are using a 2 year old OS is very telling. It means that their new phones are not selling well and older lower end models are.

What do you think it going to happen if/when Apple enters the lower end market?

It may depend on specific phones. I have no problems installing unsigned apps on my GNex, but I tried it on a GS III and it gave me a "INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES" error. I signed it using my dev certificate and it worked. Then again, I did this using the web, not adb.

That's a new one for me:). Let's hope the test certificate still works :p either way I will root the sucker to thinker with it / remove some bloatware.

I've had a few droids in the past and I never got that error. Does root influence the certificate thingy?

Given the success of the S3, the S4 will likely be the biggest competitor to both the iPhone 5 and 5/whatever it'll be called.

Yea.

Which is why I think Apple will announce the iPhone 5S, iOS 7 at WWDC in June.

Announcing the iPhone 5S in Sep/Oct would just be too much space.

My observations:

The majority of the reason the average consumer buys a phone with Android, is because it is cheaper than an iPhone. Its their first entry to smartphone too. Period.

Most people here that whine about having a new Apple iOS, is about cosmetics: wanting the home screen to give more freedom on how to arrange icons and such. So silly. Just use the phone...

From my own observations on the 'ground level', I see more and more friends dropping their android based phones for iPhones...due to frustrations with battery life, crashes and freezes, and bad or missing apps.

The hidden secret of using Android...this is what Phil is trying to highlight...

Your sample size must be small, cause a lot of people I know have moved on from the iPhone because they want a bigger screen.

And don't say it's silly to want to customize the home screens so I can view information that important to me faster, ie, calendar, weather, stock updates - controls like quickly turning wi-fi and bluetooth on and off without having to go into preferences, etc.

As a consumer I want choice and Apple is not giving me that, so I am free to jump ship to Android. For my parents though who hates technology I get them an iPhone so they can go to the Apple store for help.

This.

Google stepped up big time after ICS. JB is major improvement. Schiller will go thermonuclear on Google's ass.

They are actually helping foreign companies and hurting American companies in the process.
This does not matter because American companies are manufacturing all their products in China, which contributed to the job loss in America.

Personally, I felt iOS too boring and it is lacking new features. If iOS 7 does not bring along major changes to the operating system I might as well switch to Android instead.

Well, he's not wrong.

My iPad 2 went to iOS6 the day it came out. My GS3 has never been on the latest OS.

I had the Note II on JellyBean and it was smooth, however Apple pissed me off with my iPad 1 when they wouldn't allow it to go to iOS 6? I mean iOS 6 came out in 2012 but the iPad in April of 2010 so Really you just dropped support for a fairly new product?

I can see if there would be limited support due to the lack of sufficient hardware but they just decided to say ah, no support for iPad 1 users screw us?

I sold my iPad and do not think I will get another one, however I keep my MBP and MBA for years so I usually stay a version or two behind so I am happy with those products.

I do agree with him that Android is not as up to date with all the devices but it seems that is a carrier and Phone MFG issue and not the Android OS. We will see what Samsung brings to the table with the S4 due out on 3-12-2013...and what Apple releases at the end of the summer.

Android does have backup and restore, I use it. It's SnapPea. You install it on your computer and your phone, it automatically syncs your SMS, photos, documents, videos that are created on your phone to your computer. When you download videos/music, it'll auto sync it to your phone as well, if you are on the same network.

Android features that Apple doesn't have? Too many to list 'em all.. but off the top of my head:

1) 1 click to show traffic and how much time it would take for the user to get from current location to the said destination. i use the traffic widget every day to see time to work/home/etc.

2) swipe and a click to turn on/off wifi/BT/brightness, etc.

3) expandable storage (hello 64GB microsd for 40 bucks), removable batteries (huzzah, you have a choice on which phone you want to carry, and I've chosen Note 2, with its gigantic batteries AND removable batteries!)

i have about 20GB of videos of my daughter, what, you are asking me to choose which videos i want of my daughter and i have to pick between that and a couple of games that i'd like to play if I only buy the 16GB version of the phone? F and U.

4) big screen, it's like I have a portable video player/computer/phone all at once. it's not like I make that many phone calls anyway.

5) higher resolution (720p vs umm.. NOT 720p). i'm sure when Note 3 comes out, it'll be 1080p.

6) WAY better keyboard. If you still think Apple keyboard rocks.. well you need to get out of 2007 and see the light.. Swiftkey/Swipe blows apple keyboard out of the water.

....... I can keep on going but you get the point.

What 'features' does android have that you don't? Here's one that you have that Android doesn't. BACKUP and RESTORE! I call that a BIG one!
