I'm staring at my iPhone 7 at the same PPI as this and I'm frankly baffled. I don't have superhuman eyes, just normal decent 27 year old eyes, and the jaggies around text and round objects are very clear to me at a comfortable distance. Look at a notification dot. I'd be shocked if anyone with normal vision couldn't tell that's not a perfect circle.

I've had people flat tell me I was lying about this on the internet, but it's in front of me, I can see it right now...

Anyways, had beyond 326PPI not mattered, why do the Plus at 400 and the X both look so much sharper? Particularly the X does, since it doesn't have to downscale from 3x to 2x like the Plus.

Heres my question for you:

So what?

Can you still tell its a notification? Can you still read the text? Then you're good.

Obsessing over a fraction sharper text, which doesn't actually get you anything real advantage wise, is pointless.

Not sure he’s being totally forthcoming here.
I think everyone knows why they did. I don't like this nasty practice of delaying ready products just to force, at least dome, people buy more expensive versions. Apple has really transformed to a weird 100% $ driven company under Cook.

Someone will have to politely throw at “If you can’t see the pixels, at some point the numbers don’t mean anything...” back at Phil so they can stop using that as a spec and charging more for it.

As per usual, it’s more doublespeak to defend a price hike while employing older tech. I cannot talk about PPI and resolution until I see the XR screens in person, but if they wind up using the LG lcd screens that cause PWM - I’ll consider battery replacement.

I just compared a 554ppi ips lcd on a LG g5 to 529ppi super amoled on a s9+ and well, the s9+ despite lower ppi looks far better. Crisper and cleaner looking, and far deeper blacks. Movies look better to

Compared to the 8+ which is a 5.5" 1080P screen, I imagine the lower resolution on a bigger display will be easily noticeable. This is the double whammy as far as screen goes - larger display at a lower resolution.

I really can't stand some of the things that come out of this guy's mouth. Still remember when he was questioned why 16GB was still standard, he solution was to use icloud for storage.

The "so what" is responding to Phils claim that you can't see pixels at this resolution. If you didn't care about this topic, you wouldn't be in this comment section.

Technically he said more affordable, not affordable. But yeah, he's a millionaire like all the other Apple execs, and financially they don't live in the real world.

They are millionaires because they know that even though they are offering their products at very high prices, people still buy 'em. They know how to price stuff to get rich, it's their job. They are not the problem, majority is. Stop buying their products and watch their prices drop.

This is what I have been saying about iPhones in general for years. They are the most overegnineered hardware on the planet.

Truly so few users will ever touch the top of the computing power of their phone it’s just overkill. Who needs teraflops of computing power on the go? Are you doing fluid dynamics computations over appetizers?

You can’t even say it’s for gaming since the majority of mobile gaming is garbage micro transactions stuff that doesn’t push hardware.

If you’re super concerned over PPI for video, videophiles on phones? If you’re noticing pixels watching a Tide Pod challenge or reruns of Family Guy you have bigger issues in life.

My point is people are overstating the real effect of this on their day to day lives

Yes and No.
When I did a 30 day side by side of the X, 8+, and Razer it was very noticeable. Now if I used one and became used to the resolution, it likely would not until I compared it to a buddies better screen ;)....

Kind of like when I bought a 4k for the living room and the other half said "why?"...
now guess what she wants in the family room and bedroom?

I think people are becoming unreasonable. 4K on a phone? Really?
I seriously doubt you would be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K on a phone if same conditions were met (like bitrate, compression etc.).
People should stop chasing specs and realise that reality is not about specs. Its just a psychological effect and nothing more.

well in fairness, i can tell the differnce even on youtube vbr on 4k hdr 60fps on my phone as opposed to a 1080p stream

difference is, the xr cant display 1080p, so sorry but 720p youtube whilst okay on a £700-800 quid phone is taking the piss, people can spin it however they like, but the only people laughing are the apple board and shareholders, and it is at the customers expense.

Here go the money whiners again (are you folks just trying to stock manipulate or something?).

You're buying an iPhone for more than just the hardware. You're getting support, actual software updates for 4-5 years, an ecosystem of products, and a company that doesnt sell your information/personal data to subsidize the hardware costs.

Everyone always quickly looks at phone cost and whines, but doesn't look at all the intangibles. If the above aren't important to you, go buy a piece of trash android phone.

Macrumors Ignoring the lack of 3D Touch... again.

Cause thats a feature. Stupidest idea ever was 3d touch, an interface with absolutely no visual cues that it's available. Just "remember" or "push randomly" until something happens.

And besides, they added haptic touch anyway, mostly same thing.

And yet they increased the PPI for the X and XS... Apparently Apple's design team could still see the pixels.

the OLED screens are PenTile displays with a larger shared blue sub-pixel unlike the LCD with equal uniform pixels. Also Apple decreased the resolution from what manufacturer Samsung was making at >500ppi qHD screens for its phones. They would have gone lower still, but turns out 458ppi is actually the retina level of a PenTile screen.

No it isn't IMO. A small chin helps with holding the phone, and with swiping up from the bottom.

What's the point of reducing the chin if you then have to make your interface like this?

The XR isn't a flagship. It's a mid-tier phone.
Has a lot of flagship specs. Best silicon in the industry, fantastic camera and industry leading facial recognition.

He is right, once your eyes can't detect the difference, than you're just wasting extra battery life and graphics performance for no reason other than to play the specs game.

But we do see a difference. Put side by side a fine printed magazine or photo and an iPhone and the difference is clearly visible.

"If you can't see the pixels, at some point the numbers don't mean anything" Yet apple release a even more premium phone and use the Super Retina Display as a main USP? You can't have it both ways.
